•Cloud Computing involves a large number of computers connected through a real – time communication network • 1950’s- Underlying Concept of Cloud Computing dates back to 1959 when large scale mainframe computer available in academia & corporations .• So the real concept behind cloud computing is “SHARE CPU TIME”.• 1960-1990’s- John McCarthy opined in 1960’s that “computation may some day be organized as a public utility”.

1990’s

Tele Communications companies, began offering VPN(Virtual Private Networks)

2000’s

AMAZON Group(A real launcher of cloud computing).AMAZON Group played a key role in all the development of cloud computing by modernizing their data centers.

2006’s

Amazon initiates a new product development effort to provides cloud computing to external customers entitled..

2008’s

In early 2008, Eucalyptus, become the first open source, AWS API (compatible platform for deploying private clouds) .

2011’s

-On March 2011 IBM announced the IBM SMART CLOUD..-So the cloud computing aims to cut costs.-A single problem using cloud is INTERNET CONNECTION.- Virtualization of data is also incudes in the concepts of cloud.

Major models of cloud computing service

Page 17: Ravi ubana presentation on cloud

Cloud Computing companies have customers of three kinds –

• Infrastructure-as-a-service: Option of renting and utilizing computing power and storage capacity of vendor's quality.

• Software-as-a-Service (SaaS): Vendors license particular services to subscribers on-demand and once the contract expires, the services are disabled.

*Platform-as-a-Service: Here a developer is given the opportunity to utilize various web-tools to build and host applications.

The Back Story

Page 20: Ravi ubana presentation on cloud

Computers have internal or hard drive storage(C: Drive)

CPU has a drive for storing programs, documents, pictures, videos, presentations, etc…

Computer Storage

Standard Computer Tower or Central

Processing Unit (CPU)

Inside the Computer

Content is stored on THAT computer

To use content must return to THAT computer

Cannot access this content from another device or computer

Internal Storage

Purchase programs

Load to the computer

Each computer would need the program loaded and stored on the internal drive

Multiple work stations talk to one unit that stores information and data.

Data is not saved to the C: drive, but to a network drive

Can retrieve the data stored to the network from any of the connected workstations.

Create an Account – User name and password

Content lives with the account in the cloud

Log onto any computer with Wi-Fi to find your content

Download a cloud based app to a computer you own

The app lives on your Computer

Save files to the app

When connected to the Internet it will sync with the cloud

The Cloud can be accessed from any Internet connection

Downloads for storage

Do “save as” to save a file to your computer and the cloud

The syncing folders makes data retrieval easier

Box and DropBox require this download to work

Drawback’s:-Cloud Computing also has some drawbacks like, • The over-dependence on the providers. • The reliability of the vendors. • Protection laws in different countries vary. For eg, according to EU data protection regulation, personal information cannot be transferred outside the European  Economic Area. • Threat of unauthorized access to confidential data. • Requires internet throughout and near-impossible to work with dial-up connections.

Why the Cloud?

Page 40: Ravi ubana presentation on cloud

Can be less expensive compared to buying software and hardware

Can be used from any computer or device with an Internet connection

The device does not need as large of an internal storage system

Compatible with most computers and operating systems

Updates occur across the service
