The real magic lies not in seeing new landscapes,
but in having new eyes.
—Marcel Proust
Endless shades and tones, infinite palettes and
discoveries have illuminated my path in life. I have put
my foot on all the continents and the journey continues
to color my perceptions, change my beliefs and
transform my work. Mountaineering the Himalayas
and surfing the azure seas of the Atlantic Ocean have
left an indelible mark that finds its way into my design.
The more I learn, the more I want to see and this spirit
has made me a fearless risk taker and better problem
solver fascinated by the world and its diversity. This
search for hues stimulates and fuels my work.
Zing moves away from the clichés of package design
reflected in traditional Japanese teas. An energy drink
and food consumed by active youth, the Japanese theme
of this product is incorporated through an anime style
taken to a trendy extreme. Each flavor communicates its
own personality. These characters are female manga who
claim a special power that is absorbed after consumption.
This develops a relationship between the consumer and
the character distinguishing the brand from other flavored
energy drinks in the market. Vibrant colors of yellow, orange,
magenta, green and cyan contrasted with black and white
were chosen to convey momentum, speed and ever changing
lifestyle. Each product is differentiated by one color from a
selected palette and texture is applied to transmit the extreme
style. The slanted, deconstructed Japanese typeface used for
the mark invokes the rapid pace of youth culture with black
tin boxes to contrast the bright color and bring and urban
edge to the form. A nod to sustainability, the sturdy refillable
containers protect the product. Zing offers tea in both powder
and bag form to meet the fast-paced life of consumers.

The Shen is a unique getaway to exciting seventeenth
century Shanghai. This boutique hotel, named after the
great river that crosses the city is located in the coves of La
Jolla. Nature, combined with ancient art and culture set the
tone for Shen hotel’s opulent visage, where affluent visitors
aged 30-45, escape to the historical splendor of the old city.
This retreat contrasts the typical corporate hotel feel of the
nearby Hyatt and abandons the standard California feel that
neighboring hotels embrace. In order to convey the slower
pace of life in the ancient orient, the color palette is grayscale
complementary. The mark encloses the Chinese words
meaning spiritual life and this signature communicates
atmosphere taking visitors back 400 years. The type was
inspired by Asian calligraphy, yet all characters were hand
drawn to achieve the genuine feel of Chinese woodcuts.

Color is the most direct route to the emotions
of your audience.
—Lori Seibert
This cultured modern art gallery located in the Shen Hotel
offers antiques, art pieces and historical memorabilia of
the 17th century Ming Dynasty in Shanghai. Since the art of
this period is so unique and distinguishable, this exclusive
group of work would appeal to the affluent customer base
of the Shen Hotel. A tertiary palette of rich green and red
signifies sophistication for the identity of the gallery. The
modern typeface reflects the clean, minimal installations in
the gallery while contrasting the ancient style of the artwork.
The form of the packaging is geometrically pleasing while
abstract to address the sophisticated mood of the gallery.
A product directory in the form of a little swatch book was
invented to allow guests at The Shen Hotel quick and easy
access to the gallery and other hotel services. Simplicity
and clean style are the main concepts in the directory
leaving a lasting impression on visitors that seek escape
to ancient Shanghai.

This collaborative project was designed to create a national
economic upturn by empowering citizens to embrace and
promote local businesses and culture. Our goal was to
educate communities that local business activity develops
sustainable capital, materials, labor and consumption. As
someone who has started several independent businesses
I was passionate to create a poster encouraging others to
foster the free market. My poster shows a woman nurturing
her own business and storefronts as stair steps. This visual
metaphor is used to emphasize that small businesses build a
stronger economy. The simple silhouettes of local buildings
in a twilight blue tone was contrasted by a splash of modern
yellow. The logo features an upturned arrow to highlight the
principle that the future of this economy is in our hands.

The process followed in creating my personal identity
was challenging but beneficial. It took time to understand
how to incorporate all the elements of my style and
values into one mark but once accomplished the process
became natural and instinctive. Addressing the fine line
between my personality and visual voice led me to utilize
a bird symbol created from Hebrew letterforms meaning
“freedom.” Old Hebrew letterforms represent my cultural
heritage and passion for ancient type. A sans-serif font was
used to develop the round shape of the bird. Specimens
of ancient Hebrew letterforms on the stationery design
convert text information to a shape reflecting my style. The
monochromatic colors filling the rusty texture are part of
my deconstructive approach. Applying this to the shape of
the mark creates sophistication and harmony leading to a
juxtaposition of clean shape and rugged style evoking the
emotion of freedom.
