Revolving around the précis that “the search for abstraction plainly influenced developments in contemporary artistic expression in Québec and Canada” the MACM’s latest exhibition, dubbed A Matter of Abstraction, brings together a hundred or so works created between 1939 and the present by a selection of regional and international artists. This exhibit is a continuum of the Musée’s effort to reassess the impact of major international movements on the regional creative and result while pointing out the subtleties specific to the Quebec and Canadian effort. The exhibition is a broad overview both historically and in terms of theme. CHICAGORoy Lichenstein: A Retrospective -The Art Institute Of ChicagoMay 16, 2012- September 3, 2012
Pop Artist Roy Lichenstein was a Manhattan born painter and artist whose work strongly reflected the influences of the comic book and popular advertising style. Born in 1923 this artist’s work is as well aired, copied, and parodied as those of Warhol, however; the true diversity and complexity of his result has defied common understanding. Comprising over 130 paintings and sculptures, in addition to some 30 seldom or “never-before-seen” drawings and collages, this retrospective ia a sampling of all periods of Lichtenstein’s career including his pre-Pop expressionist work, classic Pop Romance and War cartoon paintings, Mirrors, Brushstrokes, Explosions, late nudes, and Chinese Landscapes. Special emphasis is given to Lichtenstein’s relationship to art historical sources that range from Picasso and Cubism through Sur rea l i sm, Fu tu r i sm, German Expressionism, and the American West. Since his demied in 1997, Lichtenstein’s pieces have commanded huge interest and sums at auction. In November 2011 at Chr ist ie’s in New York City Lichtenstein’s "I Can See the Whole Room! ... and There's Nobody in It!" sold for $43 million. artic.edu
