While my professional experience is extensive, my group membership is virtually nil.!!The first professional organization that I will become more involved with is PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors). While I do not wish to become a scuba diving instructor, I plan to continue my studies and certification. I have registered for a certification course, and will continue to take courses to become a Master Diver.!!There are several industry events, such as DIMA (Dive Industry Marketing Association), that I will attend. The last time I attended DIMA in 2002, I made several excellent connections that I still keep in contact with today, a dozen years later. These are people in the industry of my favorite pastime.!!I also wish to expand my connections within the writing world. There are many writing groups locally and online that can help provide motivation and support for other writers, often a solitary type of work environment. Some writing associations will greatly increase my ability to sell my writing services across a variety of mediums.!!Additionally, I plan to thoroughly research some of my “heroes” and see what types of organizations they frequently or commonly belong to, as well as the activities and events in which they frequently participate. !!Finally, there are many professional training courses and certifications that I wish to investigate. For example, I know a person quite skilled in the Salesforce CRM, and he is a part of some Salesforce group that brings him dozens of clients each year. While I am probably even more skilled in that CRM program than he is, I would never even get a single client request because I simply do not belong to that Salesforce organization. I am certain that with several certifications, many new doors will open, or at the very least, fewer doors will be closed.!!!

!EXPANDING MY PERSONAL LEARNING NETWORK!!The objective of expanding my Personal Learning Network (PLN) is focused on quality rather than quantity. Over the course of many years working in a wide variety of business sectors, I have met amazing people with just as wide a variety of interests and skills.!!While I can effectively communicate with people online, I am much, much more effective in person, and these bonds tend to be much stronger and last a lot longer time. Simply to put some specifics to my goal, I would like to meet and talk in-person with one no less than two people each of the next twelve months (and beyond).!!I am not limiting myself to the type of people, or their job titles, or anything at all, other than I wish to be able to learn something from them, and hopefully they learn something from me as well.!!In order to have a better chance of meeting this type of person, I will attend four to six professional events, such as trade shows or industry conferences. I have only been to a handful of these types of events, however some people I’ve met at these types of events have become friends, clients, or co-workers just based on the connection made months or sometimes years prior.!!Some of my “heroes” attend (or host) these types of events frequently and often tout the !benefits of such events. One of my close professional friends attends at least one large conference or training seminar each month. He claims that even though the course or conference content may be spectacular and well worth the cost of attending, really the most important value to these events is the great opportunities for networking with other successful (or striving-to-be successful) like-minded people.!!!!GETTING INVOLVED WITH THE FULL SAIL COMMUNITY!As this graduate program is strictly an online curriculum, I feel that I may best become involved within the Full Sail community is by participating in various aspects of the program in person. I have tentatively planned to spend two months of my program temporarily living in Florida, close to campus.!!As the late winter weather in Oregon becomes dreary and burdensome, sometimes raining for weeks at a time, with hardly a hiccup in the continual cloudbursts, escaping to Florida would be an excellent way to recharge the spirit and avoid the Vitamin D deficiency doldrums so common here in February and March, two of Oregon’s rainiest months.!!I will also continue to interact with my classmates through social media and email. Already, in this first class, I have connected with several folks beyond the discussion boards and can see myself keeping in touch with them throughout the program.!!My hope is that this will allow me to not only meet and communicate with some great people, but also open many doors through the power of networking.!

!CHARACTERISTICS OF A GREAT MENTOR FOR ME!!I am looking for someone who has “been there, done that” however I think that this person doesn’t exactly have to be in my specific field, just that they have experience accomplishing similar objectives.!!For example, I do not necessarily need a mentor who creates corporate instructional videos for a living. I think I could gain more significant experience learning from someone who has created an amazing set of corporate instructional videos, or even someone who has organized this type of project for a large company, community, or educational institution.!!I would expect this person to be a leader within their group, and be skilled as managing people, certainly one of my weaker areas. While I do have a lot of experience managing projects, I am not so good at managing the people working on a project.!!I would like this person to possess technical savvy as well as project management expertise, but most importantly, I would like to find a person who is able to be generous without expecting anything in return, yet a person who will still gain very much in return.!!As I am a very generous and friendly person, I have given away much time and work without any return, and many times I’ve ended up taking a loss on these projects. So I know how to be generous, but I would like to learn how to keep this generous spirit, but still be able to make the mentorship a mutually beneficial arrangement.!!People are busy, most especially the successful people, so it might be difficult to pry someone away from their busy life to spend a bunch of time helping someone. Although I like the idea of altruism and generosity of spirit, I am also realistic in thinking that “nothing is free” and wouldn't expect someone to give up a significant amount of time without something in return. While they may simply enjoy teaching somebody their craft, I am not so sure I would want a mentor who would be generous to a fault. About that, I already know.!!I would be willing to help that person in return for their mentorship, and I suspect that an apprenticeship or internship type of arrangement might not only be suitable, but also help convince the mentor to teach me some of what they know.!!!!!!!
