He lost control,

hit a telephone pole

and then a tree, flipping upside down.

He had 6 teen passengers.

They were all belted and all survived.

Injuries were very minor.

This Salem, NH crash occurred because the teen driver was traveling at 70 plus miles per hour on a 35 Mile per hour

road.

There were 429 fatal crashes

in New Hampshire from 2010-2013. ALL OF THESE CRASHES WERE PREVENTABLE

Let’s Drive Toward Zero Deaths

Impairment (41%) - 176

crashes

Distraction (27%) - 116 crashes

Speed (10%) - 43 crashes

dies

The unbuckled rear

passenger has

permanent physical &

mental disabilities

1 seat belted passenger

- walks away

There are 3 impacts with every crash:

1. The car to tree (or whatever it hits)

2. Your body against other objects, such as the

windshield.

3. Your body’s internal organs to skeleton. This

is what causes bruises, hemorrhaging, and

internal damage.

We decided to see what kinds of decisions

our students and faculty were making on a

daily basis, so we stood outside of RHS one

day in March while taking a tally of every

vehicle that left the building - for an hour

and a half!

We observed

this:

Out of 88 vehicles…..

13% Female teen drivers were holding an electronic device

32% Male teen drivers were holding an electronic device

50% of the Female teen drivers wore a seatbelt

47% of the male teen drivers wore a seatbelt

59% of female teen front seat passengers wore a seatbelt

82% of male teen front seat passengers wore a seatbelt

The 2013 NH YRBS was taken by 66 schools, the following is how Raymond

High School said they behaved.

13.3% of Raymond students never or rarely wore a seatbelt when riding in a car

driven by someone else.

Among students who drive a car, 9.1% of students never or rarely wore a seatbelt.

18.2% of Raymond students rode one or more times in the past 30 days in a car

or other vehicle driven by someone who had been drinking alcohol.

So we decided to help our community learn more about

how to protect themselves while they are in their

vehicles.

★We started to create a HUGE bulletin board inside our

school.

★We include one driving safety fact each day in the

morning announcements

★ On April 3rd we held a local Seat belt Challenge at RHS

and will be sending 2 RHS teams to the state

competition on May 13.

We’re working with Raymond Coalition for

Youth (RCFY) to come up with more ways to

spread the word.

We are going to hand out bracelets and have

a speaker come and talk about how a car

crash changed their life.

..for the next 3 years, as part of a grant

they have to work with 15 schools in the

state.
