“This is how great intellectual breakthroughs usually happen in practice. It is rarely the isolated genius having a eureka moment alone in the lab. Nor is it merely a question of building on precedent, of standing on the shoulders of giants, in Newton’s famous phrase. Great breakthroughs are closer to what happens in a flood plain: a dozen separate tributaries converge, and the rising waters lift the genius high enough that he or she can see around the conceptual obstructions of the age.”

Steven Johnson.

Starting with only a location, the group was able to gather hard data, map it, and crunch it in various ways, always having in consideration the needs of the area.

The result was a very complete analysis comparing the density of different program in the zone, and foresighting the problems and opportunities to come.

Many diagrams, both graphic and 3d were produced in this exercise.

reconstructive surgery clinicA PROJECT DEVELOPED FROM THE BUSINESS PLAN TO CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS.

Page 7: RAYMUNDO PAVAN PORTFOLIO 2012

Another very open course. The work consisted on finding a viable real state business model, including proposing a site, a type of building, construction methods and revenue sources on a 10 year time frame.

The proposal consisted on a multi use building that was mostly occupied by a Reconstructive Surgery Clinic and related services. It was not only the building, but the financial plan that made this project the winner of the Cemex Catedra Blanca grant 2006.

ARQUINE DESIGN COMPETITIONSTWO "BOXES" PROPOSALS, COMPLETELY OUT OF THE BOX.

Page 9: RAYMUNDO PAVAN PORTFOLIO 2012

What these two proposals have in common is that both are proposals for the same yearly organized international competition, and that both are not about the form of the building, but about its placement and the strategy in which they are embedded.

The first one is a site museum proposal for the Mayan Ruins of Tulum. The proposed location for the box is underwater; this way the site is not disrupted and a new entrance from the sea is created.

The second is a movable glass box attached to Mario Pani’s building in Mexico City. This box activates the publicly oriented interstices inside the building while stretching the public activity from the plaza to the very top of the building.

TEN Arquitectos was invited to submit a proposal for an iconic Centre for the Arts and Cultures and Theatre in Queretaro.

The program included many different components and the proposal added some more, like a cinema and some high end retail space.

Instead of spreading the program throughout the site, the decision made was to stack it so the building could be seen from most of the city´s areas while having a very small impact on the site.

TEN Arquitectos was invited to submit a proposal for the CAF Headquarters in Caracas, Venezuela.

This project was developed in collaboration with Oscar Grauer, and consisted on a very bold urban proposal creating a north - south green corridor connecting the hills with a park proposal on an abandoned airport. This spine was well provided with public transportation services.

The building consisted on a horizontal tower, housing all of the sq meters required on a way that the public space was more important than the iconic skyscraper that identifies financial institutions.

XOCHIMILCO MASTERPLAN

Page 15: RAYMUNDO PAVAN PORTFOLIO 2012

Located in the natural preserve of Xochimilco, in the southern part of Mexico City, the master planning project addresses a unique set of social, urban, and architectural challenges. The project embraces and improves the existing program of the Xochimilco park.

Originally developed in unplanned, disconnected phases, its scattered elements are hard to reach and threatened by severe environmental issues. The proposed master plan reorganizes these elements in a single vertical strip of developed land that is closely related to the aquatic surroundings and regional history.

My involvement in this project started as an intermediate architect while we presented proposals to the city and managed to get the contract. As soon as this contract was issued, I was appointed as the park design coordinator and promoted to senior architect.

Many consultants from many places were involved in the development of the park, and I was in charge of communicating with them on design issues. I was also responsible for negotiating and setting deliverables expectations with the supervisors and the Municipal Government.

The park was not developed all the way to construction documents, but to Design Development phase only.

It was the mixture of design, time frames, politics, finance and interdisciplinary work that made these two years a lifetime experience.

transforming a heritage building into a top class public technology hub.

Page 19: RAYMUNDO PAVAN PORTFOLIO 2012

I was approached by SALON Producciones to assist them with the architectural conceptualization and design for a technology based, open to public centre in Mexico’s City Downtown area.

The heritage building was absolutely respected and only small changes were made, so the space would successfully re arrange to host different events, public lectures to video game competitions.

Started as a pitch and now this project is home for a senior marriage.

The layout is a 3x3 matrix of 16x16 ft modules organizing program module by module. The upper level houses the everyday programmatic needs -kitchen, living room, laundry room and master bedroom- while a guest room, a library and a wine cellar are located on the first level.

The house is designed to perfectly divide the private from the public areas and allow these public spaces to extend to terraces, patios and garden.

The site is located on the outskirts of Mexico City and it is part of a new subdivision development.

The client was an early buyer, therefore this project was very important for the developer since it would set the bar for the rest of the submissions.

The stairs are the most important element on this house. They separate public from private on the first level, and master bedroom from guest rooms on the second.

Markham is recognized as a leader among Canadian municipalities for its progressive and visionary approach to planning.

Time and time again, we have observed that markham is a city that works. A culture of collaboration, respect and pragmatic problem solving is already alive and well in the halls of the Civic Centre.

COLAB is a proposal that builds on this tradition.COLAB presents Markham with an opportunity to set a high bar for interdepartmental and multi stakeholder collaboration.

COLAB draws on the resources of the municipality, the dynamism of the private sector and the wisdom of the community to research, design, develop and prototype

innovative solutions to 21st century urban challenges. COLAB is a laboratory for interdepartmental collaboration and problem solving within the municipality. Working with diverse stakeholders from the community, business sector and town, COLAB facilitates open communication and engages creative ideation methods to help Markham achieve its strategic sustainability objectives.

Throughout the year, the team struggled with defining what was it exactly that we wanted to do in markham. The fields of expertise were so different that the proposals varied from “jane walks” to a new masterplan for some areas of Markham. It wasn’t until we agreed on creating an entity that would continue our work that we all jumped on board and powered the same project. We developed a business model including the three sectors in markham and calculated the cash flow until 2015.

The communication strategy consisted on publishing a book and hosting a press conference in which we quickly explained the idea of COLAB and hosted an event showing work samples of our projects for Markham. The book contains a comprehensive explanation of the idea and its precedents. It also contains two projects developed following COLAB’s principles.COLAB had a great acceptance on Markham’s City Council, and the Varley Gallery will host an exhibit about it later this year.

For the midterm exhibit and IDS booth, we decided to recreate a common place for the suburbs and urban centres, the supermarket.

Using this analogy, we developed moments as products. Combining phrases with visuals, the patrons would buy memories and moments that are common to urbanites and suburbanites.

Green Peas helps kids break apart the huge request to “be a more sustainable citizen” into do-able challenge games. These games are specific sustainability challenges sent to them by fellow Green Peas members. Upon completion proof is upload to one’s profile, in the form of a photo or video and immediate positive reinforcement is produced in the form of online feedback from peers. The online social community tracks individual, community and world wide progress illustrating how individual efforts do in fact create real world change.

The team challenge was to imagine a new sustainable mobility vehicle and a new future for the automobile manufacturing sector beyond the car.Our proposal consists on a personal vehicle connected to a cloud computing database. This vehicle (PAT - people and things) is tailored for the Millennials, who do not hesitate on car sharing and value experience over ownership.PAT is always moving (no more parking lots), small (smaller roads, more pedestrian area), stackable (share the experience) and always informed on traffic patterns and behaviors (always taking the bet route).PAT is on exhibition at the MOVE EXHIBIT until October.
