Problem Statement
Slow GPRS Download Speed in Aircel Kerala and Andhra Pradesh
Analysis
For Troubleshooting, GPRS Speed was checked by Downloading large size files from
FTP Server connected after Chennai GGSN.( Last point of Huawei Network)
Que :Why not Speed checked by downloading from Public IP such as Google or Yahoo.
Ans : So as to rule out any issue in Radio Interface or in BSC or in SGSN or in GGSN.
For Gb over FR BSCs Speed was normal ( 15~20 KBps) while for Gb over IP it was
almost half (5~10 KBps)
Que: Why it was so
Ans : This was abnormality
One BSC in Kerala (Kochi-1) was converted from Gb over IP to FR and there was
considerable improvement in Speed ( Up to 21 KBps max) .
Que : Why converted
Ans : To confirm that issue is in Gb over IP

Action Taken
Ciphering was disabled in Chennai SGSN after which Speed of Gb over IP BSCs
was at par with Gb over IP BSCs
Que: Why Ciphering was impacting GPRS Speed in Gb over IP BSCs only
Ans: It is due to overhead involved with each packet transmission.
Que : When will be Ciphering re-enabled
Ans : Not Required as it is already disabled for Voice also ( In BSC and MSC)
Way Forward
As the Data Speed is Normal (15~20 KBps) for all BSCs till FTP Server (Last mile
of Huawei) troubleshooting required beyond GGSN till ISP Server if Speed from
Public IP is still slow.
Que: How to do that
Ans: Need to check ISP Bandwidth, Router Performance and settings .we are also
analysing and will help in troubleshooting.
