ROTARY INTERNATIONAL NEWS:
2016 World Polio Day—Oct. 24 (extract from WHO
website h:p://www.who.int/life-course/news/events/2016
-world-polio-day/en/)
World Polio Day was established by Rotary Interna6onal
over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas
Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against
poliomyeli6s. Use of this inac6vated poliovirus vaccine
and subsequent widespread use of the oral poliovirus,
developed by Albert Sabin, led to the establishment of
the Global Polio Eradica6on Ini6a6ve. Polio is a crippling
and poten6ally fatal infec6ous disease. There is no cure,
but there are safe and effec6ve vaccines. Polio can be
prevented through immuniza6on. Polio vaccine, given
mul6ple 6mes, almost always protects a child for life.
