Last year we moved the venue from York University to Warwick University. We are backat Warwick University this year and that underlines the fact that we had a very successfulConference in 2010. The Annual Conference has remained a constant throughout thehistory of the British Paediatric Association from 1928 and the College from 1996 to thepresent day. The Annual Conference in 2010 was a high profile event which drew memberstogether in greater numbers than the previous year in York. A considerable number ofnon-members from the UK and overseas also attended despite the problems of the volcanic ash cloud. The meeting was break-even financially which it had not been forsome time, not least because the Education Department was successful in selling 86%of the stand space in the trade exhibition despite a very serious economic recession.

Although we are returning to Warwick, we are not complacent. As it was our first yearthere for many years, we learned many lessons and this year we plan to make better useof accommodation, facilities, directions and signage, partly based on feedback frommembers in 2010. The ‘hot topic’ session which is invariably popular has been moved to Thursday afternoon in the hope of keeping members attending until the very end ofConference! The unintended video-link lecture by Professor Bhutto last year, because he was stranded en route from Pakistan to the UK in Rome by the volcanic ash cloud, was such a success and sent such a ‘green’ message about reducing damage to theenvironment from air flights that we are repeating the format this year by design. I hopethat there are no technical difficulties and it goes as smoothly as last year, as it was oneof the highlights of the Conference. We are also hosting in Warwick a British PaediatricSurveillance Unit Symposium to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this most successfuland innovative organisation, which was initiated by the Royal College of Paediatrics andChild Health, the Institute of Child Health and the former Health Protection Agency.

Although we are in Warwick for 2011, we remain very open minded about the future andare considering a number of options. These include the possibility of a meeting which willbe held in different venues each year, more frequent meetings held on a regional basis oracross the four nations, short and snappy CME meetings in addition to new research, moreshort courses at the College in London and in venues around the country, and the possibilityof a College meeting overseas which some other colleges and medical organisationsundertake currently. We have many overseas members that bring a great deal to theCollege and we are exploring how we can best engage with them and serve them ratherthan simply expecting them to come to an annual meeting in the United Kingdom.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible over the three days in Warwick. Duringmy first two years as President, I will have attended meetings to hear the views of members inover 30 cities around all five countries in the British Isles and in Hong Kong, Singapore, Gaza,Egypt and India, but it is always good to hear members’ views and opinions at the AnnualConference. The programme looks exciting and the Annual Conference is my best and mostconcentrated postgraduate paediatric education of the year. I hope you feel the same.

Best wishes,

Terence StephensonPresident RCPCH

Keynote Lecture 3.6 million neonatal deaths:are we delivering theanswers?

Dr Joy Lawn, SavingNewborn Lives/Save theChildren USA, South Africa Each year 3.6 million babies diein their first month of life, nowaccounting for 41% of under-fivedeaths for the MDG4 target.Progress is being made – butwhere, why and how, and can thisbe accelerated? What can Britishpaediatricians do?

Keynote LectureTackling inequalities inchild health: can we dobetter?

Professor Catherine Law,Institute of Child Health,London The lecture will give a brief historyof child health inequalities anddescribe how many dimensions ofchildren’s health remain sociallypatterned. It will then examinehow child health inequalities havebeen tackled in recent years andwhether these approaches havebeen successful. It will concludeby drawing lessons for future policy and practice.

Keynote Lecture Trials in neonatal – perinatal medicine

Professor Roger Soll,University of Vermont Collegeof Medicine, USAThere have recently been aseries of randomized controlledtrials regarding delivery room stabilization of the extremely lowbirth weight infant. Practice hasvaried from routine intubation ofall infants at risk, to intubationand surfactant treatment withrapid extubation to less invasivesupport (such as nasal continuouspositive airway pressure) or lessinvasive attempts to stabilizeinfants solely with continuous distending pressure. As the datafrom at least five moderatelysized randomized controlled trialsemerges, it becomes apparentthat less invasive methods of stabilization are adequate and mayhave some advantages regardingcost and resource allocation.
