Students will be given an organizer to help them record their research. Students will work with a partner to research a winter holiday such as: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, The New Year, Chinese New Year. There are websites listed on our webpages for them to use. They will choose a partner and a holiday. They will organize their research into chapters to write an informational paper. They will present their writing to the class and teach about their holiday. Examples of chapters: Who celebrates this holiday? Why do they celebrate? What are some symbols? When does the holiday occur and why? Where is it celebrated? Guided Instruction/Reading- Students will choose a partner and a holiday. Using websites from our classroom webpages, students will begin their research and write down facts about their holiday. Remind them they are to write down the main ideas, not every word from the sites. Collaborative- Students will work together to choose what information is important and how it will go with their chapters. Independent

Students will read the Holiday Traditions article independently. When they finish they will answer the comprehension questions and complete the vocabulary information. They will staple their definitions to the questions and vocabulary when they turn them in.

If students finish early they will read Scholastic News-Teaming Up With Eagles. They will complete the Animals on the Job chart and the reading comprehension and vocabulary builder sections.

Then have students finish – Go over all answer when all students are done. When students finish early, have students work on division cards.

Lesson 5 Multiple Step Problems -- Purpose Students will be able to determine if the story requires multiplication or division and then solve each math story. Collaboration Using Math-Aids worksheets with multiplication and division stories, students will determine answers using one of the strategies we have learned – One side is multiplication and division and one side is all division. Do first 3 together on both sides. 10 on each side. Flashcard practice or xtramath if completed early. Correct together so students get immediate feedback.
