INTRODUCTION

India has a huge demand for energy consumption. In rural areas where electricity has not reached, solar energy can be used as it is renewable as well as green. Through this project, we have done a survey of some villages around IIT Kharagpur campus on the viability of implementation of solar energy products and some suggestions have been used.

NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY

Non-renewable energy is energy, taken from "finite resources that will eventually dwindle, becoming too expensive or too environmentally damaging to retrieve", as opposed to renewable energy sources , which "are naturally replenished in a relatively short period of time." Fossil fuels:

Renewable EnergyRenewable energy is energy generated from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, and geothermal heat, which are renewable (naturally replenished). In 2006, about 18% of global final energy consumption came from renewables, with 13% coming from traditional biomass, such as wood-burning and 3% from hydroelectricity. New renewables (small hydro, modern biomass, wind, solar, geothermal, and biofuels) accounted for 2.4% and are growing very rapidly. The share of renewables in electricity generation is around 18%, with 15% of global electricity coming from hydroelectricity and 3.4% from new renewables.

Solar energy, radiant light and heat from the Sun, has been harnessed by humans since ancient times using a range of ever-evolving technologies. Solar radiation, along with secondary solar-powered resources such as wind and wave power, hydroelectricity and biomass, account for most of the available renewable energy on Earth. Only a minuscule fraction of the available solar energy is used.Solar powered electrical generation relies on heat engines and photovoltaics. Solar energy's uses are limited only by human ingenuity. A partial list of solar applications includes space heating and cooling through solar architecture, potable water via distillation and disinfection, daylighting, solar hot water, solar cooking, and high temperature process heat for industrial purposes.

Survey Data1.The survey was done in Pariapara village. Because in the initial survey, it was found that due to administrative fallacies, the village was deprived of electricity even when the electric poles had been erected long time. However Ghagra –avillage nearby had electricity long back.

2.But on going on 12 November ,we found the villagers happy as their long time wish has materialized.(till now only the BPL families have got electricity ). Yet for so many years amidst the darkness, the few well of homes were able to afford solar technology.

3.We found the vilagers general monthly income around Rs 2000 as most are below poverty line and are laborers in IIT.

The climate of West Bengal is suited for solar energy production

The Tropic of Cancer passes 6 km north of Nabadwip, so, according to latitude, the northern part of the state falls in the temperate belt and the southern part fall in the tropical belt. But the southern part receives adequate rainfall and because of maritime influence is not severely hot. Barring the mountainous pats of Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri, the entire state experiences a warm wet tropical monsoon climate. Regional differences are visible in the climate. In the western plateau region, rainfall is low and variations in temperature are more common; maritime influence in the coastal region makes the climate here moderate and pleasant. The summer temperatures in the state ranges between 26 °C (79 °F) and 40 °C (104 °F) while the winter temperatures range from 13 °C (55 °F) to 19 °C (66 °F).

SURVEY CONCLUSIONS

It is an acknowledged fact that solar energy is costly and the initial installation cost is high.

But it is beneficial in the long run since it is renewable, require no fuel, is easily procurable, and most importantly is green and pollution free.

So to make solar energy available for the economically not so well off families,we have drawn a plan.

SOLAR ENTREPRENEURSHIP

It is like one villager or extension agent opens this solar energy distribution station in the village where he installs the solar panels and houses many (around 15)- charging points and gets a stock of chargeable fluroscent lamps.

The vilagers will take this lamps on rent and use them on a daily basis and get them charged in the station in the morning.

SOLAR ENTREPRENEURSHIP (CONTD) The entrepreneur may get the initial

capital from banks, or the govt or the villagers themseles may setup a co-operative of their own.

This model is currently implemented in the sunderbans and is equally applicable for both rural areas and the suburbs where the frequency of powercuts are high.

CONCLUSION

It has been a great learning experience for us . We learnt the difficulties faced by the rural

people without electricity and the benefits of solar energy. I hope our work will bring some light in this direction.
