Building a New HouseOnce you have reached the Village Building Company’s web site you should see the following.

Click the button and you will be taken to a map of the area.

To the right of this map there is a link to Google Maps representation of this site. Click on this link. Click here if the link does not work.

The relevant part of the Google Map is shown below. A printed copy is available for you to work on.

The company also has a detailed map showing each block of land. See below.

There is a scale shown on the Google Map. It is 17mm represents 100m on the ground. On the company map 13mm represents about 100m.

Q1) Using this scale calculate the perimeter of the complete development outlined in red. Include all stages including stage 4.

Return to the home page of the Village Building Company and click on the link. This will download a brochure which includes the map shown above and the plans for many 3 bedroom houses. Scroll down to the first house. It should look like that shown in the diagram below.

A printed copy is available for you to work on.

Q2) There is no scale shown on this plan. Your task is to determine an approximate scale. The scale will take the form of

Distance on Plan : Actual Distance on the Ground

Both distances must be initially expressed in the same units and then it must be converted to an expression of the form,

1 : (Some value)

For example if the values were initially

60 mm on plan represented 6000mm on the ground this would initially be expressed as,

60 : 6000

Dividing both terms by 60 this reduces to

1 : 100

Use the length of the garage to determine an appropriate scale.

Q3) Using the scale that you have just determined calculate the approximate perimeter of the house and the approximate perimeter of the land.
