DESCRIPTION

The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust was created to perpetuate and honour the memory of Sir Winston Churchill, mainly through the awarding of Memorial Fellowships (for the purpose of travel and study abroad) to Australian citizens showing promise and ability in their calling and occupation. The building exists as a fragmented brutalist-beauty, seemingly because of inflexible architecture intent, later interferences/ additions and current tenancy pressures. The Trust has since re-located and the building is now in the hands of private owners, sub-let to a handful of businesses for use as office space. The scheme seeks to challenge the definition of re-use within the existing built fabric, wholly disregarding the buildings existing totality and rather recognising individual elements as architectural artefacts. These elements begin to organise grids, determine line, validate form, create and adapt new space.
