The new station would have been built on the present line that runs through the area, going from Glasgow Queen Street to Cumber- nauld. At that time Paul was joined by local Councillor Gerry Leonard and chair of Robroyston Community Council Ian McGhee at the site of the old train station in Robroyston. Paul remarked “As a local resident, I know that Robroyston is a wonderful place to live and work, but I have believed for a long time that the community would really benefit by hav- ing such a great transport link in place. It would make journeys for commut- ers easier, and only take 6 minutes for shoppers going into Glasgow City Centre. Everything in the garden looked rosy and all the residents in Robroyston required was the Scottish Government to rubber stamp the station and everything would go according to the residents wishes. Well that was the plan but last week Transport Minister Keith Brown met with Paul Martin and scuppered the idea as any cash that was to be spent would be earmarked for the Forth Road Bridge and the Southern General Hospital and there would be no extra money to put towards a new station at Robroyston. To say MSP Martin was shocked is understating the situation but speaking to the Re-Gen North this week he said, “ I will continue to fight for this facility which the resi- dents of the area are crying out for. Not only that the Developers were basically picking up the majority of the costs of the new station but the Govern- ment are refusing to get involved with the actual concept of what would be a tremendous boost for the area as a whole.”. The Robroyston Community Council are behind the project and the Re-Gen North is of the understanding that if the new station had been given the go ahead the area which is develop- ing at pace would become one of the most desirable places to settle in thereby meaning house prices would reflect the prosperity of the Robroyston area. At the time of going to press the Re-Gen North understands that there will be a resurrection of the campaign to get the new station back on the agenda and Paul Martin MSP will be leading the fight to get what the residents of Robroyston re- ally deserve.....Their Own Station. Happy Days Nursery aims to provide a stimulative atmosphere to encourage children's development

We believe that children learn through play. Play provides opportunities for children to be actively involved in their learning through exploring, investigating and experimenting and also express their ideas and

feelings in many different ways.

We recognise the importance of developing the child’s healthy self-image through praise, guidance and encouragement. We will ensure that every child feels important and valued. Children will be encouraged

to develop respect and to learn to share, be kind and fair and to develop good manners.

It is the aim of Happy Days to identify and meet the needs of each child and encourage constructive use of their time in a secure, caring and happy environment. We recognise the importance of treating children

and families in a fair and just way, respecting the needs and characteristics of the individual. We value parents/carers knowledge of their child’s development needs and interests and encourage them to be

part of our service in any way they can.Happy Days Nursery cares for children 6 weeks to 16 years

City Building is one of Scotland’s largest construction companies and delivers training for 500 construction trade apprentices. The company’s gas services team employs more than 140 skilled, Gas Safe*-registered engineers. It has extensive experience in providing gas services to local authorities, housing associations,

I know there has been a little nip in the air as we head into October but this does not stop you from going outside as a fire sign you prefer the warmth, but a good brisk walk will help to blow away the cobwebs of your mind to bring in clarity and stop you becoming a hurricane with those around you. Try to let go a little!

As winter draws every closer you retreat inward to the warmth of home and your own little world, it is important to stay focused on goals you set yourself in August as things could go of course if you allow complacency to set in. Try to keep your eye on the objective.

There may be trouble ahead for those of you who are trying to please all of the people! There is only so much you can do for others. Time to stop and ask yourself “where am I going” is this really what I want! If the answer is no time to stop and re-think who wants what and maybe let go of the hangers on!.

You have achieved much in the last few months and if you keep your unwavering thoughts, feelings and actions focused on your target, you will make your mark. A very determined phase is coming to an end so use this time to achieve all you can.

Love, harmony, partnerships, security, material and creative abundance you want it all and you want it now! A time to prioritize, to sort out the wheat from the chaff, once you have cleared the debris form your mind, you can have what you wish! But becareful as wishes can come true!

Victory against the odds, everything now has purpose as you charge ahead making changes around work and home, a well-earned rest. All of this took a lot of hard work so try to plan in some down time a holiday is what you need now, so let your fingers start calling those holiday destinations!

People think you are so easy going, here to listen to their problems and worries, however someone is taking advantage of your good nature so assert yourself as you are stronger than you think and your strength assures a happy outcome.

Your spirits have been a little low of late but as the sun prepares to move onto your own house you will feel elated and much happier than you have been for some time, just try to stop letting people put demands on your time, as you will have lots to celebrate this month, enjoy!

You feel tied down as if everything is up in the air, this is only a temporary phase and all of your endeavours will take a positive turn, however those of you who have been over indulging need to re-address the balance as all play and no work will sure bring in lack of funds!

Normally a sign of caution and self-restraint it is time to take a risk, and put your hearts true desire’s into action, go on jump and see where it takes you and do you know how good you will feel as you suddenly follow your heart and not that head of your for once.

Who gave you the power to judge others and their actions? Release all judgments about yourself and others and focus on truth and love that is within you as well as others, you will feel calmer and more at ease as sometimes you can rush in where other would not!!

One of the natural healers of the zodiac you can attract some really difficult people and situations in and around you, so how do you get away from other peoples worries? Go to a place nearby where you can be by yourself, preferably near water and allow the energy of that place to clear away other people’s debris and to re-energise you.

Wow how fast are the nights drawing in? Won’t be long until the clocks go back. Never mind as there is loads to look forward to, like Halloween and Bonfire night. It’s times like these that bring out the big wean in me. Can’t wait for them this year as my wee one is bigger and can be more involved. He already has his Halloween outfit picked out but I’m not telling you what it is as I don’t want to spoil my neighbour’s laugh. I have been asked to help out a friend who wants something different for a roast pork dinner, and this is one of my favourites. This is fantastic sliced as a roast or shredded and served on burger buns with fries.I have come up with another way to roast a chicken, that kids and adults alike will love.

Sticky Roast Pork

Boned shoulder of pork

Dry rub1 tsp Cumin1 tsp Cayenne Pepper1 tsp dried garlicpowder1 tsp dried onion powder1 tsp salt1 tsp black pepper

Sticky sauce1 tbsp of honey1tsp of soy sauce

Mix the dry ingredients and rub into and all over the meat making sure you work the ingredients right in. Place the meat in a bag and refrigerate overnight. Place the meat in a roasting dish with 150ml of water. Cover tightly with foil and slow roast 160c for 2 ½ hours. Mix the honey and soy. Remove the meat from the oven and lift off the foil. Drizzle the honey and soy dressing over the meat and return uncovered to the oven for another 20 min. Allow the meat to stand for 10 min once you take it out of the oven. Cut into thick slices and serve with roast potatoes and vegetables with any pan juices poured over. Alternatively using two forks shred the meat in the tin and add

1 tbsp of boiling water. Serve in buns with fries and a salad.

Roast in the bag chicken

1 Whole chicken100g of butter1 tbsp tomato puree1 tsp dried onion powder1 tsp dried cumin1 tsp of dried garlic powder1 tsp of celery salt½ tsp of dried thyme½ a lemon 1 oven proof roasting bag

Insert the lemon into the cavity of the chicken. Mash all the dried ingredients into the butter and tomato puree to make a thick paste. Spread the mixture over the bird making sure you get into all the nooks and crannies. Place the bird in the bag and tie. Place in an oven dish and roast in a medium oven 180c for 20 min per pound plus 20 min. Snip the bag open for last 20 min to allow the skin to crisp up. Carve the chicken and pour over the cooking juices. Serve with mashed buttery potatoes and your choice of vegetable.

Really Chocolatey Mousse

1 bar of dark chocolate melted1 tub of whipping cream whipped to soft peaks1 tbsp of Tia Maria

Add the alcohol to the melted choco-late. Leave this out for children. Fold the cream into the chocolate very slowly to avoid knocking the air out. Pour into glasses and chill for an hour before serving. Serve with

fresh strawberries or raspberries or as I prefer on its own.

Enjoy love Susie x

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

THE best blooms of Queens Cross were celebrated earlier this month when more than 20 awards were handed out to green-fingered residents at a prize giving ceremony held in Firhill Stadium. The annual Environmental Competition run by Queens Cross Housing Association is one of the biggest in Scotland and is great addition to community involvement in the area. Kevin Nixon, Head of Housing, acknowledged the great work and effort that local residents put in

to making their neighbourhoods greener. He said: “ I’m always delighted to see the colourful gardens, closes and back courts developing around our communities. It proves that our local residents are proud of their neighbourhoods. Congratulations to all our entrants and to the winners who put in so much work all year round.” First, Second and Third prizes were handed out in five award categories including Best Garden, Best Planter and Window Box, Best Backcourt, Best Close and Best Landing for

each of the four Queens Cross neighbourhoods (Westercommon/Hamiltonhill, Dundasvale, Queens Cross Central, Woodside). A special award went to Mr and Mrs Harvey who were overall competition winners. They were awarded the Carrie McGregor Quaich. Mr Harvey was delighted: “We enter the competition every year and have won eight cups so far but we’re shocked and surprised to have won the top award this time round. I grow my own plants from seed and just love working in the garden.”

Queens Cross Housing Association also presented the George Wylie Award 2011 at the event. The award is for the outstanding contribution to the local community and was presented to Ms Josie McLaughlin by Chairman, John Gray. Ms McLaughlin celebrates her 80th birthday this year and continues to organise a huge range of activities for older people in the area including a bingo club, lunch club and bus trips. She’s also a member of the Queens Cross Volunteers

Forum. She said: “Getting this award was a total surprise. I get great satisfaction from helping people.” Shona Stephen, Chief Executive, also commented on her first Queens Cross Environmental Awards since her appointment in March 2011. She said: “It’s an honour to be here and to see the community in action. Pride in the area sends a very strong message that Queens

Cross is cared about and that’s so important to how we and others see us.” Queens Cross Housing Association has a housing stock of nearly 4,500 units and employs approximately 190 staff. With a contract to provide support to 485 of its homes, Queens Cross is one of the largest providers of supported housing in Glasgow.

7S September 2011

BOB Doris, MSP for Glasgow, has this week welcomed assurances from Finance Sec-retary John Swinney about the selection criteria for proposed Scottish Government Enter-prise Zones. The Government is currently planning to create four Enterprise Zones in Scotland which will attract businesses to key areas and will create much needed jobs. Incentives for busi-nesses will include rates relief and easier planning regula-tions. Mr Doris is calling on the Finance Secretary to prioritise areas of high deprivation and unemployment. Bob Doris told the Re-Gen North:“We all welcomed the news that unemployment in Scotland fell in the last quarter in stark contrast to the UK as a whole, a trend which underpins the need for the Chancellor of the Exchequer to follow the Scottish Government’s lead and come up with a Plan B for economic recovery. I made clear to the Parliament that despite this progress, Glasgow still has some of the worst unemployment statistics in Scotland. “In Maryhill & Springburn, the

constituency where I live, we have the highest unemploy-ment in Scotland. The neigh-bouring Provan constituency in the north of Glasgow has the third highest unemployment in Scotland. “I am delighted that Mr Swin-ney shares my view that we have a moral duty to boost economic activity in the worst unemployment blackspots, as well as a duty to stimulate growth sectors for the overall benefit of the nation.“Recent investment in the green and renewables technology sector in Glasgow demonstrates the potential for growth of this emerging sector in the area. We have a highly skilled workforce and a great location. We need to bring this good news to many more potential inves-tors from a range of growth industries. “The Cabinet Secretary will be seriously considering the merits of awarding Enterprise Zone status on that basis. Whilst I know there are many other parts of Scotland in need of a local economic boost, I will be pressing what I believe to be a compelling case for Glasgow.”

MSP Raises Enterprise Zones for Glasgow with Finance Secretary

LABOUR MSP Patricia Ferguson has renewed her call for the Scottish Government to take action to address rising unemployment in her constituency. For the second month running the constituency of Maryhill & Springburn recorded the highest Jobseeker’s Allowance claimant count in Scotland, with 7.7% of those aged 16 to 64 within those communities claiming the benefit. The Office of National Statistics’ figures for August 2011 saw 35 more people claiming JSA than the previous month. On publication of the claimant figures for July Ms Ferguson called on the SNP Government to work with Scottish Labour to implement a 5 point plan to tackle the growing numbers of those out of work. With the latest figures confirming the scale of the problem in the Maryhill & Springburn constituency the local MSP has again urged that the key job creation measures be implemented alongside the introduction of an Infrastructure Bank to unlock investment in key infrastructure projects. Patricia Ferguson said: “Another month, another set

of worrying jobless figures for the communities of Maryhill & Springburn but still a concerning lack of action by the SNP Government. “The First Minister’s announcement of his legislative programme in Parliament last week was the chance for him to commit his Government to taking firm action to tackle unemployment, particularly action to eradicate youth unemployment and to commit to a 100 per cent employment target for the next generation of Scots. Disappointingly he failed to deliver.” “The Finance Minister said last week that independence was the most important measure the SNP Government will introduce. The most important thing for the people I represent in the communities of Maryhill & Springburn is action to create jobs. That’s why I’ve written to the Finance Minister calling on him to drop his obsession with independence and to concentrate on introducing measures to provide employment.” Labour calls on the SNP to,1. Extend the Future Jobs Fund to the private sector2. Bring back funding for Project

Scotland3. Create more apprenticeships 4. Introduce Plus One - support for small businesses to take on

extra employee5. Introduce First Class – funding for vocational education in schools

NORTH GLASGOW HOUSING ASSOCIATION98 September 2011 September 2011

THE STREETS around North Glasgow are undergoing a major transforma-tion thanks to a new ‘Hit Squad’ and their new street sweeping vehicle. ng2 took delivery of a new Swingo machine only last week and it has already been put to work in Lenzie Terrace, Saracen Street and Gourlay Street. The vehicle sweeps the roads and pavements and lifts anything in its path including leaves and those little presents left by our four legged friends. It also has a power washer attachment for clean-

ing paved areas. Supported and managed by ng2, an environmental hit squad are providing a clean up service in the North Glasgow area designed to enhance the work already being car-ried out by Glasgow City Council. Robert Tamburrini, Chief Ex-ecutive of North Glasgow HA says: “This is another good example of partnerships which support the local community. Our social enterprise company ng2 is really making a difference in the area and it’s also

great that local people are carrying out this good work in their commu-nities”. North Glasgow HA have been working in partnership with Glasgow City Council carrying out environmental improvements in the area since last year and John Devine, Head of Business Development at North Glasgow HA said: “I’m pleased with our partnership with Glasgow City Council and now with the arrival of the Swingo machine from AEBI Schmidt UK we are able to further

enhance and support a physical clean up of the North Glasgow area.” Pat Bradley of ng2 said: “The Hit Squad has made an immedi-ate impact in the area in terms of environmental improvements. We will continue to work in conjunction with Housing Services to ensure that we deliver on the priorities agreed and, in the longer term, we aim to develop the range of our activi-ties, both planned and reactive, to meet our client: North Glasgow HA’s

needs and improve the quality of service to residents in the area we cover”. David Carswell from Schmidt UK said: We are delighted to be involved in such a forward thinking environmental project.” Tenant Margaret Roy came along for a closer look at the new machine in action and said: “This is just what we need in the area. I’m delighted that North Glasgow are listening to their tenants and keeping our streets clean and tidy”.

IN September 2010, ng2 was launched as a wholly-owned subsidiary of North Glasgow Housing Association. The social enterprise company’s initial contracts comprised of close cleaning and communal area cleaning in the Association’s closes and Multi Storey Flats.

Having successfully delivered on the initial ‘pilot’ of Close Cleaning, ng2 expanded its core services to include Back Court Cleaning, Bulk Uplift Services and void remedial works. ng2 was setup with the

aim of providing training and job opportunities for local people. Key services delivered by ng2 include street cleaning, close cleaning; graffiti removal; void clearances and bulk uplifts; and also environmental improvements such as the cleaning and renovating of public spaces in disuse. In its first year of operation ng2 has trained over 40 young people, 24 of whom have gone on to full time jobs with ng2, the rest finding permanent work with our partners, or taking up apprenticeships and further education and training which we had made them aware of. Last month ng2’s new street sweeping vehicle was put into action keeping the roads and pavements around North Glasgow clean and tidy.

Case Study: Jamie Handley of ng2JAMIE Handley (20) completed a 6 month trainee programme and earlier this year secured a full time job with ng2. Jamie lives in Springburn and is a tenant of North Glasgow Housing Association. Jamie left school at 16, he says: “When I left school I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do and worked at Tesco for a spell before going to college for 2 years to study motor mechanics. Through

Job Centre plus I heard ng2 was a new company set up by North Glasgow Housing Association to employ local people so I put myself forward for the trainee programme” Since taking up his trainee post with ng2 Jamie has received training across a range of skills including Scaffolding, Health and Safety and First Aid. Jamie enjoys working in his local community and says: “Its good to actually

be making a difference to my local community and I see people I know each day telling me and my work colleagues what a good job we’re doing in the area. We clean the closes and do any environmental work that needs done. I enjoy working in my community” Jamie hopes to sit his driving test soon and he is confident that this would enable him to develop his career in ng2.

IT was congratulations all round at Glasgow University as four local people received certificates for community development programme Activate. Residents receiving their awards were Victoria Scott, Jodie McCarty and Danny McMillan from Young Peoples Futures. Also, being awarded was resident , Fahim Abdulkawi who volunteers with Playbusters. Chief Executive of North Glasgow Housing Association Robert Tamburrini attended the ceremony and said “The Activate course run by Playbusters and delivered by Glasgow University is fantastic. The graduates were delighted and now have new skills and confidence which will benefit them and the communities they live in”. The Activate programme allows volunteers to study community development and is an access route for further education either at College or University. For some, though it is about volunteering

or working in their communities to make a difference. The award ceremony celebrated a total of 25 people of all ages and backgrounds across the North East. Another Activate course will soon be delivered in the North of the city in partnership with North

Glasgow Housing Association. If you have ever been interested in volunteering or working in a Housing Association then contact 0141 551 0071 to sign up for an Activate event where you will hear more about this exciting opportunity.

THE Scottish Government outlined its legislative programme on the 7th September. Their plans include proposals to create a single Scottish police force and fire and rescue service. They have also indicated their intention to re-introduce proposals for minimum unit pricing for alcohol and to progress the delayed sectarianism bill. The creation of a single police force for Scotland provides an opportunity to improve policing in our communities; to streamline the fight against organised crime, terror and fraud across Scotland; and, to strengthen local democratic accountability. If the Scottish Government’s plan deliver this then I am my Scottish Labour colleagues

will support them. If, however, their priority is saving money rather than improving policing and safety then they will not get it right and will fail to deliver the right change for the right reasons. Given the Scottish Government’s majority their programme was noticeable for its timidity, particularly its failure to focus on making a future for young Scots. Whilst the First Minister outlined some measures on youth unemployment he was criticised for not introducing a legal right to a job or training for every young person. I supported calls for the Government to resolve to eradicate youth unemployment and to commit to a 100 per cent

employment target for the next generation of Scots. We need a renewed focus on creating jobs and tackling unemployment more than ever. For the second month in a row figures show that the communities of Maryhill & Springburn have the highest JSA claimant count in Scotland. That’s why I was concerned by the Finance Minister’s admissions that independence was the most important measure the Scottish Government would introduce. This coincided with confusion over the SNP’s policy of Scotland’s future in Europe which threatens a double whammy for the Scottish economy – threatening separation from our biggest

trading partner, England, which is Scotland’s single largest export market, but also the EU whose 27 member states account for the bulk of Scotland’s exports. I want to see a Scottish Government that concentrates on building the Scottish Economy, not one that threatens our future economic growth and ability to create jobs. I’ve written to the Finance Minister calling on him to drop his obsession with independence and to concentrate on introducing measures to provide employment. I will continue to work hard for the things that matter most to our communities.

IT has been a fruitful time in my position as deputy convener of the Health and Sport Committee. We have been taking evidence on elderly care home regulation. I am sure we will make positive recommendations to the Scottish Government. However I am delighted to say that our Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has acted ahead of the enquiry’s findings. We can now expect to see inspectors go into care homes more frequently, and unannounced.

Too often politicians are said to be unresponsive to public concerns, so well done Nicola. On responding to public concerns, I am pleased to say that our Scottish Finance Secretary has acted on concerns that UK cuts will impact on our youth. The SNP’s John Swinney has announced a new ‘Opportunities for All’ programme ensuring every 16 to 19-year-old has a place in learning or training by the end of this financial year. I also continue to make representations to Mr Swinney

that an Enterprise Zone should come to Glasgow. I am hopeful of success. Finally I recently took part in a debate calling for greater economic powers for Scotland. More power would allow Scotland to create more jobs. Using the limited economic powers at the Scottish Governments disposal we have seen unemployment lower and employment higher in Scotland, compared to the rest of the UK. The Scottish Parliament voted in favour of more powers, despite

the British parties, including Labour, opposing this. However the power still sits in London. As I write this article John Swinney will deliver Scotland’s spending review to the Scottish Parliament in just a few hours. I expect UK cuts to force tough measures, but I also expect plenty of good ideas over how to push job creation and get our economy moving. Here’s hoping for a positive response from the opposition parties to work with the SNP to get us out of the mess created by Westminster.

BACK in Parliament for the short session before the Party Conferences, the focus was once more on the state of the economy, with last week’s unemployment figures revealing that 1,200 more people in Scotland are claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance compared with a year ago, and that unemployment across the UK has gone up by 80,000. At Scotland Office questions last week, I pointed out the ineptitude of the Government’s National Insurance waiver scheme for employers taking on a certain number of workers – the centrepiece of George Osborne’s emergency Budget last June. It was revealed that this policy has created only a tenth of the jobs in Scotland that the Chancellor forecast, at a time when incentives for firms to invest have been cut in half, and bank lending has fallen by £4bn. All further evidence that the Government’s gamble with removing £81bn from public spending over this year and the following three is simply not paying off to generate private sector growth – only Portugal

and Romania have experienced lower growth in the last nine months than the UK. With the Obama administration proposing a $450bn short-term stimulus package to help manufacturing and construction jobs, the Government here has to change tack soon to meet the basic problem with the economy across the Western world – the lack of demand. Central banks should be creative in how they promote demand through monetary policy – Adam Posen, of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, has talked of providing direct loans and support to business through credit easing. Last week, the Independent Banking Commission unveiled its plans to make Britain’s banks secure against future shocks. The proposals broadly create a ring-fence around retail banking protecting savings and deposits from 2019, protected by higher capital requirements which banks must retain of 10%. It is startling to consider that in the financial crisis of 2008, some UK

banks were supporting their activities with as little as a quarter of that level of capital. Overall, Labour believes these plans are fair, although the Government should move quickly to prepare and report to Parliament next year on the steps taken to introduce them. It also needs to ensure that levels of bank lending increase immediately. Eyes have been nervously cast at events in the Eurozone. Constituents have contacted me asking why we should be concerned about the fate of the Greek economy. I have a simple answer – with 2.5million jobs and more than half of our trade depending on a strong European economy, the events in Athens directly affect our economic prospects in Glasgow too. Furthermore, our own banks have $14.7bn dollars exposure to Greek debt, $26.6bn exposure to Portgual’s debt, $100.8bn exposure to Spanish debt, $68.9bn exposure to Italy’s debt, and a whopping $136.6bn exposure to Irish debt. On Thursday, we debated Global Food Security, and in particular, the effects of the worst droughts for 60 years in the Horn of Africa.

The response by my constituents, aid agencies, and charities to the famine in the Horn of Africa caused by the worst droughts in 60 years, has been inspiring. Mary’s Meals has a distribution centre in Lambhill in Glasgow North East, and they have worked flat out to help people in the affected areas. 13 million people have been affected by starvation, and almost 800,000 people have been displaced. Events like these show why Labour was right to support an increase in the aid budget to 0.7% of national income by 2013 in line with the Gleneagles Agreement in 2005. But we must also recognise the role that excessive speculation is playing in driving the surge in global food prices. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation that the World Bank had estimated an additional 44 million people had been driven into excessive hunger by rising food prices from June 2010. Food price inflation reached 6.9% in Britain earlier this year, adding £260 to average annual food bills. We need the UK to join Governments throughout the G20 to put in place a global version of the

US Dodd-Frank Act, making sure that financial do not produce instability, volatility, and hardship for millions of starving people across the developing world nor contribute to steep rises in food prices in our shopping baskets here at home. And so next week, we head to Liverpool for the Labour Party Conference in good heart. In Scotland, Labour suffered a huge defeat in the Holyrood elections in May, but more effective collaboration between MPs, MSPs, and the people we serve is beginning to show progress in learning the necessary lessons from this loss. We will develop our ideas on making society more responsible and fairer from top to bottom, how to kick start the economy through ensuring that small and medium businesses get the capital they need to invest and take on new workers, how to help families with children get affordable, accessible childcare, and support to improve higher living standards for the majority of households who are being squeezed by lack of wage growth, inflation at over 4%, and higher VAT.

THE Re-Gen is hosting an Awards evening for the “Stars in the Community” and the “STARS” we are looking for are those unsung heroes who work away in the Community and don’t look for praise or attention. Everyone knows someone within their own community who helps others, be it by running errands for elderly neighbours, coaching youngsters in sports or a shop assistant who has a cheery disposition. Here we list the categories we are looking for and we want our readers to have a look and see if they can nominate someone who they feel fits the criteria. Nominations to Re-Gen Newspapers. 85 Main Street Baillieston Glasgow G69 6AD to reach us by 30th September.

1) Service with a Smile AwardDo you know someone, or a group or company who provides outstanding service way above what might be expected? Then this award is for them. Tell us how they operate and what it is about their service that is so outstanding and makes them way above average for customer care.2 Improving Lives in the Community AwardJudges will be looking for outstanding teams, individuals or organisations working in the community who try that little bit harder to improve the lives of others. New North Glasgow Web-SiteTHE Re-Gen North is launching a Brand new Web-site for the North of the City next month and to be part of this exciting new development we are inviting all Community Groups, Housing Associations, Sports Clubs and in fact anyone who wishes to promote their activities on our web-site to contact us. With the success of the Re-Gen North newspaper we feel that this is the next step in our growth and development. On the New North Glasgow web-site we aim to keep those of you who perhaps don’t receive a copy of the newspaper at present fully informed as to what is taking place in your area. We will endeavour to keep the web-site up to date as we proceed as the web-sites we have looked at over the past

two years have been very lax in updating the information they carry. This is where we need YOU and Your Groups to work alongside of us as we work to create an up to date, topical site with stories and activities relevant to Your Area. As far as Businesses are concerned there will be space on the new web-site to advertise and also there will be a Classified Section for small local businesses. To contact us on any aspect of the New North Glasgow web-site you can contact us on [email protected] Act now and become part of the New North Glasgow.

GHA is going full steam ahead to make communities in Glasgow cleaner, greener and saferNEW Neighbourhood Environmental Teams have been introduced with the squads delivering improved environmental, cleaning and security services to tenants and factored homeowners.

The teams clean closes, multi-storeys and backcourts, cut grass and hedges and lift litter. In the winter they will keep the icy pavements clear by putting down grit in partnership with the council.

The teams also provide security services in multi-storey flats. Mobile Night Wardens carry out regular security patrols in their neighbourhoods – in all multi-storey sites and in the wider neighbourhood – helping keep communities safer round-the-clock.

Staff have taken delivery of new equipment such as steam cleaners and power hoses and been given extra training.

There’s still a lot of work to do in many neighbourhoods but some residents are already noticing a difference - with many commenting especially on the lovely fresh smell in the closes!

Tenant Susan Bray, who lives in Pinkston Drive, said: “There was

a really fresh smell in the foyer and I mentioned it to a friend at the time.

“They cleaned the landing too and did a very thorough job.

“The standard of cleanliness was higher than usual. I’m a cleaner myself so I notice things like this.”

Other tenants have complimented GHA staff on the improved environmental work – such as grass cutting - in the back courts.

And Neighbourhood Environmental Manager Tam Rough says new Mobile Night Wardens are making a big difference by carrying out patrols through the night in wider communities.

He said: “One of the benefits is that by working more closely with Glasgow City Council we’re able to pick up ad-hoc bulk and flytipping through the night so tenants are waking up and seeing their areas are cleared.”

A big improvement is the use of hot water and steam cleaners in closes and power hoses for back courts and other outside areas.

TENANTS are keeping warm and slashing their gas and electricity bills thanks to Glasgow Housing Association’s Fuel Advisor service.More than 2,700 GHA tenants so far have already benefited from the free expert advice on how to stay warm during the cold weather while still saving energy and keeping bills down.Since its launch two years ago, the Fuel Advisors have saved GHA tenants more than £300,000.With fuel and electricity costs rising and households being forced to tighten their belts, the officers expect to be busier than ever helping tenants save money as the cold weather bites. The Fuel Advisors offer advice on how to save energy and cut bills as well as how to get access to the cheapest tariffs. They can also speak to the fuel provider on behalf of the tenants and arrange low cost payment arrangements with energy companies.Advisors in the North, South, East and West of the city carry out home visits or meet tenants in their local office.Tenants are offered Real Time Monitors – supplied by Scottish and Southern Energy - which records the energy used and shows how much is being spent. If you are a GHA tenant and would like to speak with a Fuel Advisor call 0800 4797979 or speak with your housing officer.

Staff get ready for action as part of GHA’s campaign to make neighbourhoods cleaner, greener and safer

Two of GHA’s Fuel Advisors – Maureen McMahon and Melanie Sparrow – are ready to help tenants cut their fuel bills

GHA’s £1.2billion project to modernise and upgrade homes across the city is helping to reduce carbon emissions and save energy.

Over 37,000 houses have been overclad and 42,000 have had new modern central heating systems fitted since 2003 - making them warmer, drier and more comfortable. The improvement work has cut more than 184,993 tonnes of CO2 emissions and 1,962,659 giga joules of energy - enough to power a multi storey block of flats for 349 years.

Over the next three years GHA plans to spend an additional £188million overcladding thousands more homes. We also plan to install another 747 central heating systems for tenants during this period.

GHA is proud to be a partner in Sustainable Glasgow – a citywide partners ship which aims to make Glasgow one of the most sustainable cities in Europe. For more information visit

GHA Assistant Director of Regeneration David Fletcher, GHA Chair Gordon Sloan and demolition contractor Safedem’s William Sinclair survey the rubble after a demolition

DID you know every time you take the M74 extension you’re driving across 116,500 tonnes of some of Glasgow’s most iconic multi-storeys?

As a result of GHA’s commitment to sustainability, debris from the demolitions of GHA flats across the city has been recycled and used to help build the new M74 motorway link.

Blowdowns at Sighthill’s Fountainwell Place, Fountainwell Avenue and Fountainwell Square over the last three years have generated 70,000 tonnes of rubble alone for the motorway link.

Some of the 2014 Commonwealth Games venues and roads around the venues are also being made with a little help from recycled high-rise rubble.

Alex McGuire, GHA’s Executive Director of Development and Regeneration, said: “We take our environmental responsibilities seriously. We work closely with our demolition contractors to find ways to recycle as much of the material as possible and also try to recycle the debris at local sites to reduce transport requirements. Around 95 per cent of the building rubble can be reused.

“At GHA, we encourage any new ways the debris can be used in other projects for the good of the city.”

GHA has already helped change the face of the city with around 12,500 properties demolished since 2003.

The demolitions are one part of the regeneration of communities being carried out with partners including Glasgow City Council.

10 Energy Efficiency Tips

for heading into Winter

If you are a GHA tenant, you can call our environmental hotline on 0800 561 5656 to report any issues in your neighbourhood.

1. Let the sunshine inIf you’re at home during the day,

open up some curtains and let the sun in. North-facing windows are ideal because they let the maximum amount of winter sunlight into your home.2. Close off empty roomsYou can save up to 75% of total

heat loss by closing doors to rooms that aren’t being used. Remember, heat is easily lost through exhaust fans and vents, so block off the kitchen and bathroom.3. Steer clear of the clothes

dryerDoing laundry in winter can be a

little tricky. Instead of relying on a clothes dryer, try getting your washing on the line earlier to make the most of the daylight hours.4. Keep an eye on your

thermostatOverheating your home is a big

money waster. One of the best ways to increase your energy efficiency in winter is to set your heating thermostat to between 18°C – 20°C. Every 1° C higher can add an extra 10% to your heating costs.5. Heavy curtains helpIn winter, about 40% of heat is lost

through windows. Installing heavy, lined curtains will help stop this heat transference. Make sure the curtain drops below the window frame.6. Check for leaks, gaps and

missing tilesGaps, cracks and broken tiles can

account for between 15% – 25% of the heat lost from your home. Check for gaps around windows, doors, ducts, electrical sockets and lights and use sealant to fix them. Broken, cracked or missing roof tiles also allow a lot of heat to escape. Do a quick check of your roof and organise to repair or replace any tiles that need fixing.7. Insulate your homeA well-insulated house will retain

warmth in winter and will use up to 45% – 55% less energy to heat. Insulation also greatly improves the energy efficiency of your home. Bulk insulation (like polyester or wool batts) is ideal for winter heating.8. Rug upA simplest energy saving tip is to

dress a little warmer in the winter months. Throwing an extra blanket on the bed, or wearing a few more layers is easy and cost effective.9. Maintain your heaterIt’s a good idea to have your

heater professionally inspected and serviced at least every two years. The heating unit should be kept dust free and filters should be regularly cleaned or changed.10. Switch to CFLsFewer daylight hours means we

reach for the light switch a lot more in winter. A great way to combat these extra lighting costs is to replace your old light globes with energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). CFLs use less energy to run and can last 10 times longer than standard incandescent light globes.

By following these simple tips you’ll not only reduce your winter electricity bills from your energy provider but your greenhouse gas emissions too; which is a big win for you and the environment.

Work is carried out on a multi-storey to make homes warmer, drier and more energy efficient

“IT’S BEYOND A JOKE NOW”

FOLLOWING the aftermath of th

e

Football Match

between Celtic and

Rangers last S

unday there were

over 300 arrests with accid

ent and

emergency units filled to capacity

and

as usual when it a

ll calms down what is

being done about it.

The police

have been briefed and

de-briefed this week with high level

meetings being held in the run up to the

next encounter but given that their h

ands

are tied as to

what they can basica

lly

do it is up to US the general public t

o

get a grip of the situ

ation and put it on

the line that w

e will not to

lerate this

anti-social behaviour any longer.

The

problem has been with us for around

110 years and during that tim

e 2 World

Wars have been fought w

ith comrades of

opposite religions la

ying down their lives

for their co

untry. V

ictoria Crosse

s have

been awarded to heroes of both religions

yet when it c

omes down to a football

match which at the end of th

e day results

in three points being awarded to the

winning team (NOTHING MORE –

NOTHING

LESS) th

ere is mayhem and serious in

jury

meted out for ju

st being “O

NE OF TH

EM”.

Football ri

valry between teams is

normally healthy and the crazy thing is

that when, ta

ke for instance, St

. Johnstone

play Kilmarnock, th

ere are players from

different re

ligions in oppositio

n, there is

no need for 1000 police officers o

n duty in

fact the majority

of these type of games

police themselves.

Why then is i

t that w

hen the “Old Fir

m”

meet there is t

he need to have a high

alert and tension in the air fr

om early

morning till midnight and beyond? O

ne

thing is for su

re ...It Has N

othing To

Do With Football!! So what happens

now? Well fo

r a start w

e all could act

responsibly, but th

is is easier sa

id than

done. Drink is a

major factor and with

the kick-off la

st week being 12.30 many

supporters began drinking early in the

morning, whether th

ey had it in the

house from the Saturday night, o

r were

served in the MANY public houses th

at

open their back doors t

hinking they are

doing their customers a

favour. Number

One Problem..... ALCO

HOL. The majority

of supporters w

ho rush down four of five

pints, a couple of sp

irits or a bottle

of

Buckfast, in

such a short space of tim

e

then go on a supporters bus w

ith a couple

of cans or bottle

s (yes w

e know that drink

is not su

pposed to be allowed on buses,

but we all know a blind eye is t

urned),

then get caught up in the atmosphere

of the songs etc...

, is a certain recipe for

trouble. What happens th

en is that th

ey

enter the game and being surrounded

by police and ste

wards they seem to

be able to keep a lid on their e

motions

albeit some will e

ither be warned or even

arrested for minor offences.

It’s on the

road home when the drink has begun to

kick in and the hatred that they have for

each other spills

over. Now the people

we are speaking about here are NOT the

usual perceived “Thugs”,

these are

people who are run of the mill n

eighbours

and have “Friends” o

f opposite religions,

who in any other circumstances w

ould

normally do everything they could to help

anyone in need. The problem is t

hough,

that in the run up to an “O

ld Firm” game,

all the hype that has been spouted by

some of the tabloid newspapers

in an

effort to sell th

e paper basica

lly fuels

the bigotry and hatred. Just t

he slant

put on stories ca

n stir up feelings of

bigotry or perceived bigotry and even

photos which in the normal ru

n of the

week would be accepted as part o

f the

story, all o

f a sudden are construed as

being too much of one side or th

e other.

BIGOTRY, no matter w

hat shape it t

akes

is unacce

ptable and to put a spin on a

phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can

be part of it.

In a newspaper th

is is easy

to do...Take for example both teams of th

e

“Old Firm” w

in 1-0 they week before they

both meet.

Headlines proclaim Celtic

Cruise To

Victory,

Rangers Scrape Win, (

or vice

versa), such headlines are perceived as

favouring one team or the other and in

some cases as bigotry, which to normal

people sounds crazy but w

hich paper

would you take, obviously the one that

hypes up your team and seems to

bring

down the other. FOOTBALL S

ONGS and

CHANTS, many of th

ese are hilarious and

show the fun side of fo

otball but w

hen

it comes to

the “Old Fir

m” fun goes out

the window. Most o

f the songs su

ng at

“Old Firm” m

atches are now aimed at

inciting the oppositio

n by bringing the

“Irish Tro

ubles” into them and make no

mistake BOTH SIDES ARE A

S BAD AS ONE

ANOTHER. Of co

urse no one will agree

on this as each sid

e proclaims it is p

art of

their herita

ge to sing such songs.

The answer to

that is that it

is part

of EVERYONE in

the area’s herita

ge to

walk along a street on the day of a

football match and not be subjected to

the violence, bigotry or abuse that is

happening now after “Old Fir

m” games.

Families, Housewives, P

ensioners etc,

have the right to

enjoy a day of rest

without all the hassle

that accompanies

an “Old Fir

m” match.

We could rave on

and on about the negatives th

at happen

when the “Old Fir

m” meet and the cost

to every one of us for th

e policing, fo

r the

ambulances and medics needed, fo

r the

upset of our daily lives and much, much,

more, suffice to say that....

If you spotted

someone trapped in a car cr

ash or a house

fire, would you sto

p to think...”I wonder if

that person is a diffe

rent religion to me?”

before trying to save them.

If you’ve got

to think of the answer , t

hen not only do

you have major problems....”WE A

LL DO.”

A Sandyhills Loan shark this week

admitted to illegally lending money

from his home in Glenturret Street

and at other addresses in the city at

Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Colin Morrison (46) provided several

illegal cash loans to a vulnerable

couple who were forced to move home

to escape his clutches after being

charged interest which amounted to

over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and

his partner Angela Clements (who

suffers from the muscle wasting disease

Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash

from Morrison and struggled to pay the

high interest levied on the loan. Often

the couple were left to scrimp on around

£15-00 a week as the pressure became

too much to pay off the loan, forcing

them to get deeper into the mire by

borrowing from other illegal lenders

just to pay off Morrison. Two other

women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina

Close also fell under the grasp of the

Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed

money unaware that they would be

paying back extortionate rates of

interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff

Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted

the charge as the Crown accepted a plea

of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin

and a Breach of the Peace charge.

Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also

charged with lending money illegally

but her not guilty plea was accepted by

the Crown.

Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the

court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements

borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00

from Morrison and it was estimated they

had paid back around £1500 a year for

six years.

It was stated that the couple would

borrow from other lenders just to meet

the repayments on Morrison’s loans.

Eventually it became too much for the

couple and they were forced to flee their

home to escape from the money lenders

in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells

borrowed cash from Morrison around

Christmas time in 2007 and continued to

do so for the next three years.

Widow, Georgina Close (50) also

borrowed sums but always repaid them

the following week at an Interest Rate

of 30%.

When the matter was reported to

the police a warrant was issued to

search the Morrison home in the quiet,

leafy, suburbs of Sandyhills and

officers found £7,230 stashed in his

wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated

that Colin Morrison had not

been employed or in receipt of

benefits during the period in

question. Sheriff Martin Jones

told the accused, “Those who

prey on the poor, weak and

vulnerable in this way will be

severely treated by the courts.”

He also stated that Morrison

had pled guilty to a very

serious charge. Sentence was

deferred until later this month

for background reports and

Morrison was released on bail. He also

faces proceedings under the proceeds of

crime act.

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN “ACCORD”

PRIOR to being returned un-opposed

as First Minister, Alex Salmond joined

newly elected Shettleston MSP John

Mason and East End Councillors, Alison

Thewliss, David Turner and David McDonald at a meeting with carers and

service users at the closure threatened

Accord Centre in Dalmarnock. The Accord Centre which provides day

care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for

the Commonwealth Games car park and

athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been

fought every step of the way by the East

Carers group, service users, families and

friends. The closure of the Accord centre

leaves the east end with just one day care

facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the

first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the

Community Health and Care Partnership

which explained that the service offered

at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands

in contrasts to the Councils current view

which is the close the Accord and not

replace the service. This is part of a wider

Council policy called Personalisation which

has seen a round of large cuts to people’s

personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson

on Social Care said of the meeting; “It

was great that the First Minister could join

carers and service users from the East End

at the Accord Centre and to give them his

support in their fight against Glasgow City

Council’s proposals to close the centre and

cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the

Commonwealth Games, the closure of

the Accord leaves just one day centre for

people with learning disabilities, and even

this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt

Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution

which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next

week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who

continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s

disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel

able to accept our invitation to meet today

when he was already in Glasgow to discuss

the Accord Centre, but the offer remains

open. “It is also regrettable the SNP government seems intent on treating this

issue as political football when they appear

to have no real understanding of what

needs to be done.”We at the Re-Gen are not in the least

concerned about anyone scoring political

points but what we are concerned about

is that a vulnerable group of people who

deserve much better are being passed from

pillar to post and could end up with no premises to meet their needs. What is called for here is for the two opposing parties to iron out a solution (such as using somewhere like the old Fernan Street premises which would be capable of housing the group either short term or even

long term). What we don’t want is for a group who

are dependent on stability to be messed

about. Get it sorted out quickly or we will

start going after those who don’t seem too

bothered as to where the Accord service

users are housed as long as they can say,

“We did our bit for the Party” We are

watching the outcome with interest so

please get it sorted as soon as possible.

DRUGS worth an estimated street value of £3,000,000 have been seized by officers from Strathclyde’s major crime and terrorism investigation unit. Around 2.45pm on Friday (16 September) officers, acting under warrant, entered and searched a flat in Craigbo Avenue, Maryhill, where they recovered and seized approximately 26 kilos of heroin and 11 kilos of cocaine, worth an estimated street value in excess of £3,000,000. (Three Million Pounds). Along with the drug seizure, officers seized several items of equipment normally used in the production and distribution of drugs. A 50 year-old woman and a 41 year-old man have been arrested and are currently in police custody in connection with the seizure.

STRATHCLYDE Police have announced that they are introducing tough new measures to combat Glasgow’s alcohol problem. Chief Constable Stephen House has been part of a Joint action Group on alcohol that have been looking at different initiatives that will be implemented to tackle problems associated with underage drinking, binge drinking, problematic drinking and noisy or antisocial parties.

There will be a zero tolerance approach with measures being implemented such as;

• A dedicated Alcohol Task Force which will carry out operations across Glasgow and will include dealing with individuals involved in alcohol related crime and rogue or problematic premises

• Plain clothes police officers on public transport

• Tenancy warning visits to families where children are causing problems

With the possibility of a new community payback scheme as an alternative to prosecution for alcohol related offences.

B’ Division Community policing Teams will also be working side by side with the new Alcohol Task Force, continuing the good work that is already ongoing in relation to alcohol fuelled crime and under age drinking in our local communities.

A good example of this work was last Friday (16th September) when the Maryhill Community Policing Team arrested a male who had been continually purchasing alcohol from a local off sales for youths under the age of 18 yrs.

His arrest was part of an ongoing campaign in both Maryhill and in the East End of Glasgow to combat the sale and supply of alcohol to young people.

Inspector Anne Hughes is in charge of this initiative and would like to urge all readers of the Re-gen to come forward and report premises or individuals who are selling or supplying alcohol to young people.

The Community Policing team can be contacted direct on 0141 532 3879 or alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Regardless of the method of contact all call will be treated in confidence.

Commuters in Glasgow are being asked to help reduce the number of cycling accidents by showing respect and courtesy to road users as the city highlights its new ‘Go Safe’ campaign. Go

Safe Glasgow, the city’s multi-agency road safety partnership, launched the drive this week following an increase in the number of cycling casualties from 2009 compared to 2010. The Go Safe Glasgow Road Safety Partnership was formed in 2009 to assist with the delivery and promotion of the road safety service in GlasgowThe partnership is led by Glasgow City Council and members include: Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, Glasgow Community Safety Services NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Glasgow Community Planning Partnership. Although the

casualty trend over the last five years has remained quite steady, the number of serious injuries recorded during 2010 were up by 24% compared to 2009. As part of the project keen cyclists who commute into work, including several Glasgow City Council employees and councillors, were given small video cameras to attach to their bikes or helmets to record a ‘week in the life of a cyclist’. The footage showed that although by commuting to work by bicycle is, in the main, a safe and viable option to the car. All the cyclists experienced some ‘near misses’ and recorded instances of other cyclists putting themselves in danger and not following the Highway Code. Look out for the flyers and posters which will be displayed throughout the city to promote the “Go Safe” campaign. Go Safe Glasgow seeks to support road safety objectives; establish Glasgow’s strong performance in cutting accident rates, and improve them further.Previous campaigns delivered by the partnership

ASHFIELD toppled the League Leaders Rob Roy at Adamslie Park, Kirkintilloch last Saturday producing a terrific display of attacking Football to win by 5-2. Ashfield had not visited Kirkintilloch on League Business for many years and made up for lost time with two early goals from Chris Hall before being pegged back by a Gorman strike. However the `field went on to score further first half goals from Ali Martin & Shaun Fraser to go in 4-1 up at the Interval. When Paul Maxwell added a fifth early in the 2nd half, the `field were in `Dreamland`. The Home side never sat back & were rewarded late on by a Fulton strike from 22 yards. A remarkable performance from Ashfield against a very good Rob Roy Team.Match Report and Pics courtesy of

the superb ASHFIELD WEB-SITE ACCESS ADDRESS ashfieldafc.wetpaint.com/ The Crowd were still pouring in when both Teams entered the slippery turf which had taken a fair amount of Rain prior to Kick-Off. The `field were sporting their away strip of Light Blue & White hoops with the home side in their traditional Black & Red as both teams started the game with confidence. The `field made a very bright start testing the Rabs back four with a couple of early corners. Fulton and Crombie showed a quick flash of what has been causing teams trouble this Season before young Jamie Coll cleared to safety however in the 11th Minute the `field were ahead. A lovely move saw Tony Chalmers played through on the right & the Ashfield winger cut

in before despatching a fierce shot which was brilliantly saved by the Rabs Keeper. The ball was parried out and Chris Hall was first to react volleying a right footed shot into the back of the net to the delight of the travelling support. Rob Roy 0 Ashfield 1. This goal settled any nerves and Ashfield started hitting the hosts on the break time and again with both Ali Martin & Tony Chalmers on the wings stretching the Rabs back four and in the 16th Minute `the field were 2-0 up. A superb through ball from Mark Thomson found Chris Hall in space and the Ashfield striker drew the home keeper before cleverly going past him to knock the ball into the empty net to put the `field 2-0 up. Rob Roy 0 Ashfield 2. The Rabs were stung into action and put some pressure on the Ashfield back

four & were awarded a couple of free-kicks which were cleared. Just as Ashfield thought that they had weathered the storm then the home side had pulled a goal back. A wicked curling ball was played in from the right and the Rabs No 11 was first to react to guide the ball past McLenaghan with the Ashfield back four appealing for Offside.Rob Roy 1 Ashfield 2. 20 Minutes gone and it was game on. The large crowd were treated to some good Football from both Teams however the `field were electric on the break and looked like scoring with every attack. The best goal of the afternoon happened three minutes later. Shaun Fraser found Paul Maxwell on the right and `Maxi`s` low hard cross was met by an onrushing Ali Martin who had managed to get ahead of his marker and

the ball was in the roof of the net. This was a terrific move from Ashfield & a very clinical finish from Ali Martin for his 5th Goal of the Season. Rob Roy 1 Ashfield 3. Ashfield showed no sign of letting up and seven minutes before the interval were further ahead courtesy of a Shaun Fraser goal. It was Chris Hall again that was proving the be a thorn in the home side`s defence and as he found space inside the box, he cut the ball across the six yard line for an unmarked Shaun Fraser to knock-in. Rob Roy 1 Ashfield 4 This had been a very impressive attacking first half display from Ashfield and the League Leaders would have to work hard to pull themselves back into the game as Referee Colin Stevens brought first half proceedings to a close.

The rain lashed down in the early part of the Second Half as Ashfield tried to consolidate on their lead with some good possession of the ball. Rob Roy were working extremely hard and showed no ill effects from the first half however as they poured forward to try and salvage the Match it was Ashfield that broke with pace and looked extremely dangerous. In the 57th Minute Ashfield increased their lead further via a very well worked goal which again involved Man of the Match Chris Hall. As the young Ashfield striker bore down on Goal for his possible hat-trick he unselfishly cut the ball back to Paul Maxwell to place into the empty net to

put Ashfield in `dreamland`. Rob Roy 1 Ashfield 5. The delight on the Ashfield players & supporters was there to see as this performance saw Ashfield head up to 3rd in the West SuperLeague Premier Division. Five Seasons ago at this time Ashfield had been battling to get out of Central League Division 2. The Home Side for the next half-hour played extremely well and Ashfield had to put in a tough shift to keep the Rabs at bay. Despite the pressure it was the `field that could hve increased their lead with Jim Smith heading narrowly past the post and Paul Maxwell was thwarted on a couple of occasions by the Rabs Keeper. With 6 Minutes to go the home side finally reduced the deficit courtesy of a 20 yard piledriver from Fulton which gave McLenaghan in the Ashfield Goal. Rob Roy 2 Ashfield 5. The game finished without any major incident and both teams will now get a break from League action for a period of time. Both Ashfield and Rob Roy head up to Aberdeen in the First Round of the Emirates Scottish Junior Cup First Round with the `field heading to Spain Park to take on Banks `O Dee and the Rabs heading slightly further up to take on Dyce.

SCOTTISH champions Glasgow City have made history by becoming the first domestic side to reach the knockout stages of Europe’s elite club competition - the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Glasgow City reached the last 32 after comfortably topping Group 5 with convincing wins over Spartak Jaffa (Serbia), Mosta (Malta) and Klaksvik (Faroe Islands). They now face Valur Reykjavik of Iceland over two legs, the first being played at Petershill Park next Thursday (29 September) at 7.45pm. Tickets priced at £5 for adults and £2 for concessions are now available from www.tickets-scotland.com or direct from the stadium itself. The clash at Petershill Park is also the first UEFA Women’s Champions League tie to be played in Scotland and will see the famous Champions League anthem played. To make their achievement even more remarkable Scotland is one of the few countries in Europe that has an amateur league meaning players have to balance football with their careers, education and social lives.

City head coach, Eddie Wolecki Black said: “We are really looking forward to the match. The team more than deserve to have reached this far in the competition and it would be fantastic to have the support of Glasgow and Scotland behind us to try and help us get to the last 16. I am confident that anyone who comes along to see us for the first time on the night will be impressed by our entertaining style of play as we always remain true to our attacking philosophy. It is a historic occasion for the City and one our players will treasure for a very long time.” The Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and the Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games, Councillor Archie Graham, told the Re-Gen North “Not only have Glasgow City done themselves and Glasgow proud with their outstanding performances in this year’s Champions League but they are flying the flag for Scotland. To reach the knockout stages is a remarkable achievement and we are all looking forward to their clash with Valur Reykjavik. I am sure the people of Glasgow

and beyond will come out and roar them onto another famous win.” Scottish FA Women’s national coach, Anna Signeul said: “The Scottish FA is right behind Glasgow City. They are doing Scotland proud with their fantastic success in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. We hope the public get right behind them on the night and enjoy women’s football at its best.” Glasgow City have dominated Scottish football in recent years having won the Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) five times since they were formed in 1998, including the last four seasons in a row. City currently sit nine points clear at the top of the league having won every league match they have played this season. Their attentions will turn to Europe later this month when they will be hoping to reach the last 16 by overcoming Valur Reykjavik, and the Petershill Park based club are calling on the people from all over Glasgow to come out on to roar them on to victory before the return leg in Iceland the following week.

OPERATION Reclaim the excellent project introduced by North Glasgow Housing Association continues to give hundreds of local youngsters the chance to take part in free activities including football and dance. Numerous ex-footballers who reached the top of their profession have gladly joined the “Reclaim” project to pass on their skills and tips to the many young people who have discovered just what the project can offer them. Players such as Charlie Miller and Gary McSwegan (ex Rangers) and Andy McLaren (Dundee United) are totally involved with the youth of the area and are delighted to take part in the activities which are all geared to reducing violence and breaking down territorial barriers in the area. The project was recently awarded over £200k for 2011/12 as a result of its success. North Glasgow Housing Association manages operation reclaim and also provided funding

of £55,000 this year for the project. “Operation Reclaim” operates in Royston, Quarrywood/Wallacewell, Red Road, Springburn, Milton, Possilpark, Blackhill and the Sighthill areas of the city and week by week more and more youngsters are discovering that those they previously thought were their enemies were really friends they had just not discovered. Prior to “Reclaim” many of the youngsters were basically left to wander the streets and left to their own devices which at times were leading them into areas which they would have preferred to have avoided. The programme for young people aims to increase participation, improve health & well-being and reduce reported crime & disorder. Since last Summer the programme has delivered just under 1,000 sessions and registered and actively engaged with 1,042 young people in North Glasgow who

have pulled on their football boots or dancing shoes. Chief Executive of North Glasgow HA Robert Tamburrini told

the Re-Gen North: ”By taking part in a range of diversionary activities young people can burn off energy

in a constructive way, and have fun. North Glasgow HA continues to support Operation Reclaim this year not just on

an operational level but also financially too as we work to help make our communities safer for everyone”.
