It was dark, sprinkling, and I appeared to be the only one on the road that night. I was lost in prayer and wasn’t paying much attention to the road signs and I had my GPS Navigation device turned off. All of a sudden I saw the number of the road I was supposed to take but the sign didn’t look right. I immediately took the exit and within a few minutes realized that though the number was right, I had taken a county road. The shape of the sign indeed had been wrong. After I had been on the county road for about a mile I decided that I wasn’t going to make another navigation error again so I turned on my navigation app. The app told me to take the next right, which I did. I correctly took another right. The app told me again to take another right. What was unusual was that the road I was instructed to take was gravel. My small red Prius wasn’t much of an off-roader and I couldn’t see where the dark gravel road led. I decided that the GPS was probably more accurate than my intuition so I slowly took the road. A crop was on the right and occasional farmhouses on the left. After a while the road transitioned to a dirt road. The road became less level and I began hearing growth hit the bottom of my small Prius. Mud was beginning to fling from my tires. I looked around and I didn’t even see a farmhouse now. A large puddle now covered the trail. Should I press on in m ATV Prius or slowly back my way on the trail I could no longer clearly see? I decided to press forward so I floored the pedal and fish tailed it through the large puddle slinging mud everywhere. Just a few moments later I saw blessed pavement! In time, I found my way home with only a dirty car as my sole witness. What happened to me? God, Guts and a GPS

A few years ago I was retuning from a promotion ceremony in

North Carolina and travelling back to Virginia. It was dark, sprinkling,

and I appeared to be the only one on the road that night. I was lost in

prayer and wasn’t paying much attention to the road signs and I had

my GPS Navigation device turned off. All of a sudden I saw the

number of the road I was supposed to take but the sign didn’t look

right. I immediately took the exit and within a few minutes realized

that though the number was right, I had taken a county road. The

shape of the sign indeed had been wrong. After I had been on the

county road for about a mile I decided that I wasn’t going to make

another navigation error again so I turned on my navigation app. The

app told me to take the next right, which I did. I correctly took another

right. The app told me again to take another right. What was unusual

was that the road I was instructed to take was gravel. My small red

Prius wasn’t much of an off-roader and I couldn’t see where the dark

gravel road led. I decided that the GPS was probably more accurate

than my intuition so I slowly took the road. A crop was on the

right and occasional farmhouses on the left. After a while the road

transitioned to a dirt road. The road became less level and I began

hearing growth hit the bottom of my small Prius. Mud was beginning

to fling from my tires. I looked around and I didn’t even see a

farmhouse now. A large puddle now covered the trail. Should I press

on in m ATV Prius or slowly back my way on the trail I could no longer

clearly see? I decided to press forward so I floored the pedal and fish

tailed it through the large puddle slinging mud everywhere. Just a few

moments later I saw blessed pavement!

In time, I found my way home with only a dirty car as my sole

witness. What happened to me? I had been praying to God, which of

course is natural and proper; however, I wasn’t paying attention to my

eyes on God and my physical eyes on the road with enough awareness to keep safe and

navigate properly. When I discovered that I saw the number I needed I relied on my gut

to make a split second decision and goofed. Then I decided I was blindly going to follow

my GPS no matter what so that I would not get lost or make a mistake again. Another

mistake! The GPS led me down a long and winding gravel road that became a muddy

trail in the middle of a large field. Technology or experts alone can’t lead us where we

need to go. I have discovered that in ministry I need to keep my heart and spirit focused

on the Lord, become aware of my unique ministry context, and culture, and then trust my

gut instincts after I’m informed by technology and the experts. Keeping this balance

helps me to keep a somewhat healthy ministry perspective and on the right road for His

kingdom’s sake. Lord, please help me to follow you with all of my heart, to have the eyes

to clearly see what needs to be done, and to have the right training and technology to

support your mission. Please keep me on your narrow path. Amen. “But small is the gate

and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matt. 7:14, NIV).

God Bless,

Fr. Hal

Dear Cindy,

How shall I describe our friendship? What an incredible experience knowing

you. We first met at church, in Sunday School. We were the “eight o’clockers,” the

early birds gathered for the shorter service at Good Shepherd. One thing led to

another, and soon we were friends. You were caring for your mother, and I, my

mother-in-law. Our strongest bond was a love for our Lord Jesus Christ. We held

Bible study at the park, at church, at the library. We talked on the phone…. A lot.

When you sold your mother’s Fairway home, things changed. You slowly

became isolated, a prisoner by choice in your own house. I was frightened by your

weight loss, your phobias, your rituals, your loneliness, and the demons tormenting

you. I tried to scold and cajole you into eating, seeking medical and psychiatric help,

meeting people in public places; it didn’t work. I assumed my ways were best for you;

how brash and pompous on my part.

Through it all, you never gave up on me. You never said an unkind word or

stopped loving me. I have never been so unconditionally accepted and affirmed by a

friend in my life. You ended every conversation telling me you loved me. You wanted

to hear me call you Darling, Precious, Cherished Child of God. All you ever wanted or

needed from me was love.

How many times did I throw a verbal temper tantrum to get you to change,

only to have you respond in Christ’s love? Countless times you forgave me when I

finally calmed down enough to repent my sing and apologize. How prideful was I;

how humble and lover were you. I thought God put me in your life to “help” you.

Wrong. He put you in my life to bless me. You were, and are, an abundant blessing

from God.

The day you died, I cried uncontrollable tears. Tears for healing, and afterward

I knew I was crying for myself. A friend like you is one in a life time. I will miss you

terribly.

The Lord is our joy and our strength in all times, and I know you are in the loving

arms of our Savior. I thank you Cindy, for choosing me as a friend; for trusting me

with your tender, pure heart. Beauty flows from ashes in the wake, for now I am

friends with you other loved ones, united in praise of God, pressed into His loving

service. I thank my God for every thought of you. Rest in peace, my Darling. Rest

in his presence forevermore.

Your friend, Jean, with all my love.
