Christmas Carol
When Christ was born in Bethlehem,
'Twas night, but seemed the noon of day; The stars, whose light Was pure and bright,
Shone with unwavering ray; But one, one glorious star
Guided the Eastern Magi from afar.
Then peace was spread throughout the land; The lion fed beside the tender lamb;
And with the kid, To pasture led,
The spotted leopard fed; In peace, the calf and bear,
The wolf and lamb reposed together there.
As your Minister I would like to wish the entire United Presbyterian Church a
Christmas Season filled with the love and peace that only Christ can bring. May you all have a Merry Christmas
and a blessed New Year.
Haddad Christmas Dinner Once again, the gracious Alejandra and Souheil Haddad will open their home for Christmas Dinner. This
year the festivities take place on Saturday, December 16 at 6 p.m. The Haddad’s ex-
tend their hospitality each year so that friends and members of UPC can come together
to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
They’ve been doing this more than twenty years, thus making the annual Haddad
Christmas Party no less than a Christmas tradition for UPC.
We don’t need to do anything but show up! And eat! And laugh! And sing! And cele-
brate the birth of Christ! It’s an act of love and that’s why it’s such a joyous event.
Don’t miss it! A sign up will be posted in the Narthex. Please mark on the sign-up
sheet if you need a ride and transportation

Youth in Action (and everyone is invited to join)
December 10th, the youth will be working on gifts for their parents and Sunday
school teachers from 11:30a-1p. If you would like to pair up with a child and help all
are welcome to join us.
We still need your support to nurture our youth. We are looking for a person to teach
the teens once a month (most likely the 4th Sunday of the month). Curriculum is pro-
vided but could use some supplements provided by your personal touch. This is a 1-2
hour commitment a month.
We also need someone to help in the nursery. There is an opening the 3rd Sunday of
each month. This is a 2 hour commitment from 9-11am. Also someone to cover the
occasional 5th Sunday as well as substitute when needed. These positions are critical in
creating a calm consistent atmosphere in the nursery.
If you are interested in volunteering or getting involved with UPC youth contact Karen Like ([email protected])
or Melanie Mathis-McBride ([email protected]).
Financial Report
We were deeper in the red as of the end of October. Our expenses for the month were $14,941.17 and our in-
come was only $5,670.35 giving us a net cash flow of negative $9,270.82 for October. Our year to date total was
negative $17,836.15. The long term solution to our continuing financial shortfalls is to increase our membership.
In the meantime, again this year, we must ask for extra donations in December from those who are financially
able to do so.
On a more positive note, the Peacemaking Offering brought in $333. This money is used to support peacemaking
and reconciliation ministries. One fourth is kept here for local ministries.

My UPC Family,
Just a note to thank each and every one of you for your support and constant understanding during my brother's illness and my loss. UPC sent lovely flowers for his service. Several sent cards and brightened some of the dark days. Others offered help if I needed anything. Deacons supplied food for his service and some attended. I truly appreciate your condolences and understanding. My feelings are expressed in this Irish saying:
Death leaves a heartache Nothing can heal.
Love leaves us memories No one can steal.
My memories keep him with me until we meet again. My heartfelt thank you, Judie Iverson

Christmas in Heaven I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below,
with tiny lights like heaven’s stars reflecting on the snow.
The sight is so spectacular please wipe away that tear,
For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I sent you a special gift, from my heavenly home above.
I sent you each a memory, of my undying love.
After all, love is a gift more precious than pure gold.
It was always more important in stories Jesus told.
Please love and keep each other as my Father said to do.
For I can’t count the blessings or love He has for you.
So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away the tear.
Remember, I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

Scottish Heritage at UPC
The Scottish Heritage of the Presbyterian Church (USA) was celebrated on November 12 by a special Scot-
tish Heritage worship service at United Presbyterian Church. The consensus of opinion was that it was a
remarkable worship service of honoring and learning supported by wonderful Scottish music.
The service began with a traditional Presbyterian processional led by bagpiper Angus Mar-
tin playing Scotland the Brave followed by the United States of America Flag carried by
Gerrit Jan Heitink, the St. Andrew’s Flag presented by Thomas Brown in historic Scottish
attire, the Christian Flag carried by Patrick Nyarko and the Rampant Lion Flag held by
Linda Brown in historic Scottish dress. Next was the Beadle represented by Logan
McCloud Worden carrying the Holy Bible and then came the Chancel Choir, Elder Alejan-
dra Haddad serving as Liturgist. Reverend John Na-
poli completed the processional wearing a custom
made St. Andrew’s tartan stole.
Reverend Napoli then performed the Kirkin of the Tartans followed
immediately by Blessing of the Tartans. Those presenting tartans
were Linda Brown with Clark tartan for blessing, Tom Brown with
Brown tartan for blessing, Lou Malcomb for Frazier, Duncan, Mal-
comb and MacCallum with MacCallum tartan for blessing, Stepha-
nie McCloud Worden with MacLeod tartan for blessing, Jim
McDonald and his son Douglas with McDonald tartan for blessing
and Miriam Michael with Michael of Appin tartan for blessing.
Linda Brown presented to the congregation a very well received
Scottish Greeting which included explanations of the pageantry be-
ing witnessed and historic notes. She spoke in both Gaelic and Eng-
lish.
Reverend Napoli accepted the donation of the St. Andrew Flag and
the Rampant Lion Flag to United Presbyterian from Tom Brown.
Liturgist Alejandra Haddad then conducted the Call to Worship tak-
en from the Book of Common Order: Church of Scotland. She continued with a traditional The Call to
Confession, Congregational Dialogue of Confession (from 1637 Scottish Book of Common Prayer) and
Words of Assurance.
The Chancel Choir then performed the anthem O Praise the Lord of Harvest under the direction of Dr. Sa-
rah Moon Stamey. Be Thou My Vison was the opening hymn. The rousing closing hymn was Amazing
Grace with introduction on the bagpipes by Angus Martin and the congregation sing-
ing accompanied by Dr. Stamey on the organ. Angus then played the postlude of An-
drew MacNeill of Colonsay on the bagpipes.
The celebration of our Scottish heritage continued at Fellowship Hour with a pitch-in
lunch that highlighted Scottish culinary traditions including entrees, side dishes and
desserts that had been organized by Lou Malcomb and Linda Brown. A silent looping
slide show of Scottish vistas and points of interest was played in Fellowship Hall dur-
ing lunch and displays of books, maps, military items and other pieces of Scottish his-
Adding greatly to Scottish Herit-
age Sunday was the authentic his-
toric Scottish attire of Tom Brown

ist Angus Martin.
