Sika is a globally active company supplying the specialty chemicals markets. It is a leader in processing materials used in sealing, bonding, damping, reinforcing and protecting load-bearing structures in construction (buildings and infrastructure construction) and in industry (vehicle, building component and equipment production).

Sika’s product lines feature high-quality concrete admixtures, specialty mortars, sealants and adhesives, damping and reinforcing materials, structural strengthening systems, industrial flooring and membranes. ‘Euroclass’ classifi cation system

The new system consists of 7 main classes and 2 sub-classes

Main classes: A1, A2, B, C, D, E and F, where A1 is the best classifi cation. The fi re-performance is used to characterise the product in one of the main classes.

Sub-classes: Smoke production and fl aming droplets

Reaction to fi re

Classes A1 and A2 will have very limited or limited contribution to a fi re. Classes B, C, D, E and F have increasing contribution to a fi re.

Smoke production

The fi rst sub-class describes the smoke production when burning the product. Three levels are available: s1, s2 and s3, where s1 is the lowest smoke.

Flaming droplets

The second sub-class describes whether fl aming droplets are created or not. Three classes are available: d0, d1 and d2, where d0 has no droplets created.

What is this?

– Individual building regulations throughout Europe are being harmo-nised into the ‘Euroclass’ classifi cation system.

– Part of this includes reaction to fi re for construction products.

– Once implemented these will supersede all existing national requirements.

– All building materials will then have to be classifi ed within the categories A1 – F for reaction to fi re.

A2 – probably the highest class achievable for a bonded panel

– The calorifi c values for all component materials of the panel need to be determined.– These must meet the levels set out in the requirement.– The calorifi c value of the adhesive sets the maximum allowable

coat weight.

– The adhesive application machine must be capable of applying adhesive accurately and be able to document this. – Finished panels are then tested at an approved test house to

determine the total heat released as well as the smoke and fl aming droplets produced.

– A rating will then be given to the panel based on the results.

How can I achieve A2 for my panels?

What can Sika do for you?

Through our products, services and know-how, we can help you achieve the optimum performance. A2 s1 d0

A sandwich panel consists of substantial components (Steel and core material) – and non-substantial components (Coating, primer and adhesive). There are calorifi c demands for each individual panel component.
