How is RWI taught at Bierton? • All EYFS are assessed on entry to Reception. This

identifies their baseline (entry to the programme). • Based on their assessments, children are then grouped and taught in ability groups. • Children are reassessed each half term to identify progress made. • As a result, groups change and children are in new groups, again based on their ability.

Page 5: Read, Write, Inc. Phonics @ Bierton...Once your child knows these ‘Set 1 Speed Sounds’ and has learnt to orally blend them together to read words they will be ready to move onto

• Groups are very fluid and children will continue to move based on the level of progress made. • Children are taught RWI for 30 minutes each day. • 30 minute lesson consists of: - 10 minutes Speed Sounds practice - followed by a wide range of reading activities.

Reception: Starting with ‘Speed Sounds Set 1.’

• Reception children are learning and practising saying the first initial sounds taught in Read, Write, Inc phonics in ‘Speed Sounds Set 1.’

• These are represented by each letter or groups of letters. These initial sounds are taught in order to begin with.

• Each sound is taught with a picture, to help the children remember the sound. For example: The sound stretched: mmmmmmmmmmm. Children are also taught to handwrite: Maisie, mountain, mountain as they go down Maisie and then over the two mountains. They also orally Fred talk: m-a-n, m-u-m, m-a-d.

*Before your son /daughter can start to read, they need to be able to read these ‘Speed Sounds’ quickly and effortlessly. They need to be able to: *Say the sound that is represented by each letter or group of letters. *Sound out the word e.g. c-a-t, sh-o-p etc… Once your child knows these ‘Set 1 Speed Sounds’ and has learnt to orally blend them together to read words they will be ready to move onto ‘Red Ditty Books’ with words. While your child is still learning and securing their ‘Set 1 Speed Sounds’ they will also continue to bring home books with no words. Books without words are really useful as they encourage children to tell the story themselves from the illustrations. Encourage your child to talk about the pictures. Ask questions such as “what is the dog doing?”, “what do you think will happen next?”, “how is the girl feeling?” When children start to read we encourage them to look at the pictures if they are stuck on a tricky word. You can help them embed this skill early, by talking about the pictures in any books you share now.

Reception: Starting with ‘Speed Sounds Set 1.’

Reading books • As mentioned previously, your child will only be bringing home a book with sounds in which they already know and can blend.

• We have adopted the ‘Goldilocks’ approach to reading. The book is just right, not too hard and not too easy. They should be able to read 90% of the text. • Reading at home is to be a celebration of the children’s progress in learning.
