Readability is a way of deciding how hard atext is. It is a good idea to know how hard atext is before you assign it to be read in aclass.Readability formulas take into account thelength of words as well as the length of sentences.

Rudolf Flesch caused arevolution in journalism andbusiness writing in 1948 with

his book The Art of Plain Talk and his Reading E asereadability formula.

Flesch Reading Ease scoreR ates text on a 100-point scale; the higherthe score, the easier it is to understandthe communication. For most standarddocuments, aim for a score of approximately 60 to 70.

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level scoreR ates text on a U.S. grade-school level (Add oneto the score to convert to UK school years). Forexample, a score of 8.0 means that an eighthgrader (year 9 in UK or 13-14 yr old) canunderstand the communication. For moststandard communications, aim for a score of approximately 7.0 to 8.0.
