Opportunities allow our students to find out what they like and what might constitute future employment and career path. We also assist our students develop their talents through persistence, hard work and the development of a growth mindset. We believe that our students deserve to live empowered lives with passion. We are rapidly approaching the end of Semester 1. However, there is still much to be done kindergarten to Year 10 reports, Secondary Regional Athletics, activities day and NAIDOC are amongst the activities our students will participate in before the Term.

At the beginning of next Term our Year 10 and 11 students will have the opportunity to travel to Canberra and the Snow Field. This is an excursion we try to run every two years. Sometimes the destination is varies such as the Great Barrier Reef two years ago. It is a great opportunity for our students to experience the both Canberra and the Snow Fields. Such an excursion requires both staff and parent support. The students travelling to the snow this year have been raising funds for the last 2 years. Their efforts have reduced the cost of the excursion for each student by about $200. The students who are currently in Years 8 and 9 would be advised to start funding raising next Term to support their excursion in 2021. We will celebrate 2019 NAIDOC at Woodenbong Central School. NAIDOC Week falls in the upcoming holidays and we traditionally hold our school events on the week before the holidays. This year the theme of NAIDOC Week is Voice, Treaty, Truth. On Monday is our Flag Raising, on Tuesday our Racial Harmony Assembly and Wednesday is our Whole School Activities Day. Stress can reduce and inhibit learning. Brain research and neuroplasticity shows how information moves from being paid attention to short term memory and then long term memory. Negative emotions (anger, frustration, stress) can hinder information moving to short term memory. Unless that information is recalled, linked to other learning or practices it is forgotten very quickly (within a day 80% is lost unless it is recalled, linked to other learning or practices). To strengthen learning we need to strengthen the pathways with in the brain. That is regular practice, making connection with prior learning or recognising

patterns strengthen learning. Homework that does this will lead to long term learning. By the end of this Term our Year 10 students will receive a Year 10 into Year 11 subject selection booklet. This booklet will provide information to both parents and students on 2020 Year 11 subjects. We will hold our parent afternoon on 7th August, Wednesday week 3, at 4pm. By providing the booklet by the end of the Term parents and students have time to examine the subjects on offer in 2020 as well as time to speak with teachers and Head Teachers before the parent afternoon. Time becomes tight with our Year 10 students going to the Snow in week 1 and many will go to Dubbo in week 6 of next Term. Early subject selection provides time for us to help meet the needs of our students with their subject selections.

Engage in Learning High Quality Learning

Environments Deep Learning

A student who averages 90% attendance will miss more than 260 days (or 1 year 3.6 months) of school over their 13 years at school. That is they will be over a year behind their peers who have near perfect attendance. Regular attendance at school assists with student learning. When a student is absent from school they not only miss the content but the learning opportunity the teacher has devised to assist them learn as well as the underlying ideas and concepts. Often learning is built upon one concept or idea leads to another. Regularly absences can leave gaps that become increasing difficult catch up on. There are times when students are away from school due to sickness, family reason or leave. To ensure the absence is explained either send a note explaining the absence or contact the front office (02 6635 1281). Students should always catch up on work missed as soon as possible. The Home School Liaison Officers (HISLO) regularly visits Woodenbong Central School to check on student attendance. More information on attendance is on the school website: http://www.woodenbong-c.schools.nsw.edu.au/our-school/attendance-absences. It is important that our office has up to date contact numbers for parents. These numbers are crucial especially in times of an emergency. We understand that from time to time parents need to change their phone numbers we would ask that you let the school know of any changes to contact details.

In her autobiography, singer Dolly Parton says: ‘My high school was small, so during graduation each of us got a chance to stand up and announce our plans for the future. “I’m going to junior college,” one boy would say. “I’m getting married and moving to Maryville,” a girl would follow. When my turn came I said, “I’m going to Nashville to become a star.” The entire place erupted in laughter. I was stunned. Somehow, though, that laughter instilled in me an even greater determination to realise my dream. I might have crumbled under the weight of the hardships that were to come, had it not been for the response of the crowd that day. Sometimes it’s funny the way we find inspiration.’

Every hero in Scripture, without exception, overcame obstacles and opposition. David writes: ‘They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. He also brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me… For by You I can run against a troop, by my God I can leap over a wall. As for God, His way is perfect; the Word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him… It is God who arms me with strength, and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of deer, and sets me on my high places… For You have armed me with strength for the battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.’ (Psalm 18:18–39 NKJV)
