Objectives
• Understand School Readiness Program.
• Enable the teachers to plan.
• Help the children to adapt to the new circumstances.
Readiness
• Readiness is an attitude.
• It is about making the school a fun place yet a great learning institution.
• It is about building a sense of belonging for parents and
children with the school.
The Ready School
• A welcoming school environment where the child feels secure.
• Well prepared and friendly teachers.
• School equipped with adequate infrastructure.
• Parents are proud of the school where their children are studying.
Briefing the parents
• Provide an overview of the school, even a walk around if needed.
• Provide an overview of the teaching practices, CCE, and nature of parents involvement.
• Encourage the parents to meet the teachers at least once in a month.
The Ready Classroom
• Neat and hygienic.
• Hexagonal tables / light chairs.
• Display boards / colourful charts.
• Storage space for bags, etc.
• Adequate supply of stationary / teaching aids.
Characteristics of 5 year old
• Like to try new activities.
• Needs lots of physical activities.
• Short attention span.
• Needs consistent rules.
• Needs empathetic disciplining.
The Ready Teacher
• Well groomed.
• Smiling, friendly and approachable.
• Able to build quick bonds with students.
• Knows each student by name.
• Avoids corporal punishment.
The First Day / Week
• Welcome the children.
• Introduction by teachers / students.
• Familiarization with school facilities.
• Pledge / Prayer.
The challenges
• Help the child to overcome shyness and make friends.
• Build confidence, listen carefully, speak properly.
• Follow instructions, work with one another in pairs/groups.
Expectations from the child
• Punctuality.
• Proper uniform.
• Postures/Manners during assembly.
• Learn / share with one another.
• Keep parents informed.

Story telling
• Story should be short.
• Use colorful pictures, puppets, masks, film show/CD.
• Demonstrate by acting / encourage the children to act.
• Narrate in English or Hindi.
Songs / Poems
• Songs increase concentration of the child.
• Songs help in sharpening the memory.
• Sing the song / play the cassette.
• Help the children to sing along.
Arts and Craft
• Free hand drawing.
• Drawing with stencils.
• Colouring pictures.
• Cutting and pasting.
• Paper folding / Clay modeling.
Worksheet
• It is a creative effort of the teacher.
• Useful for teaching or revision.
• Should also cater to the average and slow learner.
• Preferably two worksheets per week.
Games
• Improves overall health.
• Helps in improving concentration.
• Builds qualities like discipline, team spirit, etc.
• Provide good recreation.
Assessment
• Assessment at the end of 6 weeks.
• Check if desired behavioral outcome is achieved.
• Assessment may include, e.g. Confidence, Creativity,
Understanding, etc.
