At first glance, the message of today’s readings seem very clear: just be a good person. Many of us, no matter what faith background we come from, have grown up hearing these very same lessons in our daily lives. Don’t steal, don’t lie, don’t hate, be fair, don’t hurt others, and help those in need. Simple enough. We are blessed to be members of a college community that instills in us a sense of service to others, and offers plentiful opportunities to engage in such service. To many Anselmians, the messages of these readings seem easy enough to follow. There is so much merit in giving generously of our time to those less fortunate, and we know these selfless acts of charity are pleasing in God’s eyes. But is this all that we are called to do?

As we look closer at the Gospel, another meaning becomes clearer. Jesus is not simply asking us to clothe the naked, feed the hungry, and welcome the stranger. He is asking us to treat everyone we meet as we would treat Christ himself. In his own words, “what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me”. Personally, I find this to be one of the most significant

challenges in my life. We all work hard to treat our friends, our family, our loved ones, with respect and dignity. However, we are called to do so much more than that. We are called to love others even if we cannot expect that same love in return. We are called to care for those that others may overlook. We are called to treat

those with whom we may disagree, those whom we may dislike, with as much dignity, love, and respect as we would for Christ. The first reading reminds us to “take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow countrymen”, and to “love your neighbor as yourself”. We now know that this extends not only to those with whom we are close, but to every one of God’s children. The season of Lent offers us a beautiful opportunity to do just that.

It is a common practice to make sacrifices during the Lenten season. I would imagine that Davison’s quota of chocolate sales goes down significantly as people make changes to their diets, cutting out certain foods to serve as a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifices for us. There is a beauty and a humility in making these sacrifices, for they do indeed serve as a daily, hourly reminder of the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for our sins. However, when considering a sacrifice or change in lifestyle this Lent, why not go a bit deeper? Today’s readings give us a perfect inspiration to transform not just our physical diet, but our spiritual one as well. Pope Francis wrote in his 2015 Lenten message that "Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience." He goes on to say, “If you want to change your body, perhaps alcohol and candy is the way to go. But if you want to change your heart, a harder fast is needed. This narrow road is gritty, but it isn't sterile. It will make room in ourselves to experience a love that can make us whole and set us free.”

As we move through the next forty days, let us all reflect on Pope Francis’ words, and their connection to today’s Gospel. As we cut out those things which may hurt our physical health, why not do the same for those things that harm our spiritual health? Why not cut out gossip, slander, ignorance, and ridicule? Why not focus on treating everyone around us as we would treat Christ? In this way, although we may not be able to completely remove these harmful habits from our lives, we can refresh our souls and prepare ourselves for the Resurrection that we will celebrate in forty days.

Verse Before the Gospel 2 Cor 6:2b

Behold, now is a very acceptable time;behold, now is the day of salvation.

Gospel Mt 25:31-46

Jesus said to his disciples:"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him,he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another,as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right,'Come, you who are blessed by my Father.Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food,I was thirsty and you gave me drink,a stranger and you welcomed me,naked and you clothed me,ill and you cared for me,in prison and you visited me.'Then the righteous will answer him and say,'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you,or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you,or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?'And the king will say to them in reply,

'Amen, I say to you, whatever you didfor one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.'Then he will say to those on his left,'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food,I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.'Then they will answer and say,'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirstyor a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?'He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.'And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
