What is a Reading Check?Reading Check is how you monitor the student’s progress in reading. It checks:• Accuracy• Fluency• Vocabulary• Comprehension skills.
Who carries it out?The person supporting the student carries out the Reading Check exercise with the student at regular intervals throughout the programme.
When does it happen?Usually this is after the student has covered 4 pages of Units of Sound (UofS) Reading on the computer. There should be at least 24 hours between covering a page on the computer and the Reading Check.
What is in the Reading Check Resources?• There are 12 sets of Reading Check resources in each stage• Each set has 2 sheets for the tutor and 2 for the student• The student sheets can be reused• The tutor sheets form a record and so you need a set per student
What is in a Reading Check Set?• Student Blocks sheet: Covers a selection of words and sounds from 4-6 pages• Tutor Blocks monitoring sheet: Corresponds to the student Blocks sheet• Read it Student sheet: Covers the ‘A’ page passage• Tutor Read it monitoring sheet: Corresponds to the student Read it sheet, with passage and
comprehension questions. At the end of this sheet there is an Action section, indicating what the tutor should do if the student shows a lack of accuracy in the reading.
How is a Reading Check carried out?• Print the 2 Tutor monitoring sheets of the appropriate set - Blocks and Read it. Or, print the whole
stage when you start working with the student.• Print the 2 Student sheets of the appropriate set - Blocks and Read it. Remember, these can be re-used.• Follow the script as set out on the Tutor sheets at the beginning of the stage. • Follow one of the recommendations on the Action section. If the student shows a lack of accuracy or
fluency you can set those pages to be covered again on the computer.• Keep each Tutor Reading Check monitoring sheet as a record of the student’s progress.• Update the student’s records online.
i
A Tutor’s Guide to Reading Check STAGE 1
UK v01
Using Sheets & Sets• There are always 2 sheets per set for the tutor and 2 sheets for the student.• Each Units of Sound stage has 12 sets.• You will start with the ‘Blocks’ sheet, then follow with ‘Read it’ sheet (the only exception to this is
Sets 1&2 which only have Blocks sheets).
How do I know what action to take? The Reading Check, as set out here, is designed for staff in busy classrooms working with groups of students at a time. When you hear students reading you will know if they are struggling, or sounding out words. UofS is designed to keep students at a level where they are working comfortably – not where they find it hard. Trust your instincts – you will know when students need more repetition, and when they don’t.
Actions you can take...

Tutor Set Student Set
1. ContinueIf a student completes the Reading Check comfortably then he will continue onto the next pages as set.
2. ResetIf a student has had difficulty decoding any of the blocks then the UofS page can be reset on the program.
If you have timeYou can use the UofS books and ask the student to read out the pages that were causing problems, including sentences and passages. This will give you a fuller idea of how well the student is decoding. You could ask follow-up questions on vocabulary, structure and patterns.
3. Review
If the student is making more than a few errors and is finding it hard to read fluently, then you can consider re-doing the Reading Placement to check the student is working at the right level.

Oh no! The hut is a mess and Tom is mad at Pat. Let’s give Pat a bath and try to get rid of all this mess in the hut.
Tom will have to try to settle that dog. I think Pat is a bad little dog. It will come to a bad end. I think that I will not have a dog at all.

Do they play with the ball for long? No

Come on then, send the ball to me. You can give it a big kick. That was not a very good try was it? Run and get that if you can. I have had it and want to pack it in. Let’s give the boy his ball back and sit on that log there.

Comprehension question Answer
What was strange about how the cat looked? It was green
Why did the person dreaming wake up? The dog dropped a bone on the person’s hand
Name one thing the cat didn’t like Milk or cat meat
Can you think of another word for ‘funny’? Strange, odd, bizarre
What was the weather like that day? Hot and sunny
30A
This was a very funny dream.
There was a big fat cat in it, but he was green. He did not like milk. I had a big tin of cat meat for him there as well, but he did not like that.
He wanted to eat bits of wood and green grass all the time. He seemed to like thick little bits of dry wood. Then he let some wood drop on my hand and I woke up.
There was my dog with her bone. I had gone to sleep at the foot of the tree in the hot sun.
That was a funny cat, and a funny dream.

What has happened to the bike? It has a puncture
Can he get home on foot? No

What’s another way of saying ‘fix’? Mend, sort out
What seems to have caused the puncture? Glass

Did you say that you can fix my bike for me? If you can I will be very pleased. You see I can not get home on foot. I live far away and need my bike to go all that way. There is not even a bus until five and that is a long time.
Yes, I think it was a bit of glass that did it. You can see the hole in the tube there.
In a little time that will be set and I can put it on and ride off home. You have been very good to do this for me. May I ask what your name is?

What is the person in the story going to do? Go for a ride, have a picnic
What is the person in the story taking along? Food and a bottle of Coke
What time of day do you think it is? Morning
How do you know the weather hasn’t been very good so far? ‘Summer has come at last’
It is a hot dry day today. The summer has come at last. If I am good to Mum I may get the OK to take some food out with me. I must ask Ben if he can come too.
There is not a cloud in the sky. The sun looks as if it is here for ever. Come on Mum, leave the cleaning up. Let me get a box to put the food in. A bottle of coke to drink and off I go on my bike. All I have to do is call for Ben. I bet he is in bed fast asleep.

Comprehension question Answer
Why is Jack in a bad mood? He can’t work out a sum
Is Jack’s friend any good at maths? No
How does Jack tease his friend? Jack pretends his friend always adds things up in his favour
Does his friend find it funny? No
What do they have to do later? A test
‘Now Jack, tell me why you are in such a bad mood.’
‘Well I keep trying to get this sum to come out. I just can’t do it.’
‘I see. Well, it’s no good asking me, is it? I’m no good at doing things like that. But I hardly need to tell you that, do I Jack?’
‘No, I don’t think you do. When you add 2 and 2 you seem to make it five. At least you do when you are adding up what somebody has to pay you.’
‘Don’t talk like that or I will get annoyed. Just let me get on with what I have to do for the class test please.’

Comprehension question Answer
When did they find the camping site? Last summer
Why do they like being near a river? So they can fish
What sort of fish are in the river? Trout
What does it mean: ‘that’s just a tall story’? You’re making it up
Have they had a good catch? Yes – they look in the bag and say ‘wow’
‘What a good place this is for a camping site.’
‘Yes, we found it last summer. We were looking for a place to do some fishing. The farmer is a very helpful man. He lets us fish in this part of the river if we do not make a mess. There are lots of trout in there.’
‘Get away, that’s just a tall story. You won’t get trout in a silly bit of water like that.’
‘That’s what you think. You come over here and take a look in this bag. What do you think of that then?’

Comprehension question Answer
What did the cat catch? A mouse
Where was the cat sitting the second time the narrator saw him?
On the lawn
What was the cat doing? Blinking, yawning and washing its paws
What’s another word for ‘a pest’? Nuisance
What sort of look did the cat give the narrator? A smug or knowing look
Errors
My sister has a cat called Claude.
With a name like that it sounds as if it must be a very fine cat with good manners.
What! Not a bit of it. That cat is a real pest. Last week I saw it crawling across the lawn. When I had a second look I saw it had a mouse in its jaws. It was awful. It looked at me and then it ran off.
When I next saw it, there it was sitting on the lawn in the sunshine. It was blinking and yawning and washing its paws. It gave me a look as if to say ‘What a lovely day it is for a cat to sit in the sun and be good!’
