Passage
With the nation experiencing a long, hot summer, people who work in hot
environments need to be aware of potentially life-threatening disorders caused by the
heat. Heat disorders range from mild rashes, dizziness, and heat cramps to more serious
problems such as fainting and loss of consciousness, which are symptoms of heat
exhaustion and heat stroke. "Don't think you can outsmart the heat," Secretary of
Labor Alexis M. Herman said. "Heat stress can kill. This is a time to realize how
dangerous the heat can be and do all that you can to stay cool. So take a break and
drink plenty of water. ""Some simple adjustments during these hot summer months can
prevent needless tragedy," said OSHA Assistant Secretary Charles N. Jeffers. "The risk
of heat-related illnesses can be reduced by drinking plenty of water, taking frequent rest
breaks, wearing appropriate clothing, and having access to shaded, well-ventilated
areas. "One person may be more susceptible to heat stress than another, so it is
important to know the symptoms and to take prompt action when they occur. OSHA's
pamphlet, "Protecting Workers in Hot Environments," and its "Heat Stress Card" have
detailed information about recognizing, evaluating, and controlling heat stress. Both are
available on the agency's web page at www.osha.gov.
What is the main idea of the passage?
a) One person may be more susceptible to heat stress than another.
b) Heat disorders range from mild rashes, dizziness, and heat cramps to more
serious problems.
c) Heat disorders such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion are not
life-threatening.
d) Simple adjustments are not enough to save a person from heat disorders.
e) Heat disorders are potentially life-threatening, but simple adjustments
can help.

Passage
Driving a car safely down the highway takes focus, and Police Chief Johnson views
cell phones as yet another distraction that can take away focus and potentially lead to an
accident. The Police Chief, who also is the department's accident reconstruction guru,
doesn't have statistics that show the role that cell phones play in accidents because there
is a large amount of underreporting. A recent survey of 500 people indicated that half of
those polled had seen unsafe driving caused by other drivers talking on cell phones.
More than 90 percent felt the practice was either "extremely dangerous" or "somewhat
dangerous."
What information do statistics provide regarding cell phones and accidents?
a) Statistics show that more than 450 people felt the use of cell phones
while driving was either "extremely dangerous" or "somewhat dangerous."
b) Statistics show that 250 people had seen unsafe driving caused by other
drivers talking on cell phones.
c) There is probably a correlation between the use of a cell phone and the
frequency of accidents.
d) Statistics provide little information because of the large amount of
underreporting.
e) There is probably no correlation between the use of a cell phone and the
frequency of accidents.

Passage
Over the past three decades, pizza has quickly become one of the most popular
foods in North America. The four key factors that have led to the rise in popularity of
this Italian specialty are the growth of franchising opportunities, the health food craze,
the increase in dual income families, and the recession in the early 1990s. As a result of
pizza becoming more widely accepted, there has been a dramatic increase in business
opportunities available for pizza franchises. Thousands of pizzerias have opened across
the United States, many of which specialize in the traditional Neapolitan pizza. Pizza
also appeals to those who are concerned about maintaining their healthy lifestyle. To
meet their needs, many pizzerias now offer whole-wheat crusts with assorted vegetable
toppings. Home pizza delivery has grown significantly, especially among busy people
such as dual income families, who appreciate the convenience of home-delivered pizza.
With both parents working, the time available to prepare meals has decreased, making
pizza delivery a more favorable option for a hot family meal. The economic recession of
the 1990s has positively impacted the pizza market. Many restaurants were forced to
reevaluate their menus to include more variety at a lower cost since their customers
were not eating out as often. This has provided a unique challenge for chefs to
enhance their culinary abilities and provide creative options for the pizza specialty. In
addition, chefs are using this creativity to offer pizzas in restaurants that would never be
found on home delivery menus.
Referring to the text above, all of the following are reasons for the increased
popularity of pizza in North America, EXCEPT:
a) Dual-income households
b) The recession of the early 1990s
c) A more health-conscious community
d) Neapolitan style pizza
e) Franchising

Passage
One of the animals that was prevalent during the dinosaur age was the
mastodon. This mammal closely resembled an elephant and is now an extinct species,
along withthe sabre-tooth tiger and tyrannosaurus rex. One type of the mastodon
species, themastodon Americanus, was as large as the modern Indian elephant. This
mammal wascommon in the United States and became extinct about 8,000 years ago.
Mastodons werevery similar to elephants in appearance with their immense body
structure, large head, and strong legs. In addition, they had long tusks that were arched
and a muscular trunk.Mastodons were also covered with long, furry hair much like the
mammoth. However, the differentiating feature of the mastodon from the elephants and
mammoths weretheir tuberculate teeth. These teeth were useful to the mastodons,
herbivores, whose dietwas strictly composed of vegetation.
Based on the description above, what do you suppose a mastodon most
resembled?
a) A tiger
b) A rhinoceros
c) A large reptile
d) A herbivore
e) An elephant

Passage
When your body is exposed to the cold weather, it is important to be familiar with what
can happen when precautions are not taken to keep warm. The stages someone
experiences with frostbite closely resemble the stages of a burn. The characteristics of
frostbite can indicate the stage of the condition: frostnip, superficial frostbite and deep
frostbite. The first stage of frostbite is called frostnip. It's an early condition of frostbite
and is not technically even considered frostbite. It is usually found in different places on
the head (nose, ears, cheeks) and can be characterized by a white, waxy-looking patch
of skin. This patch of skin will eventually become red in color and the person will
experience pain or discomfort. Some relate it to a burning sensation and it may lead to
blistering. Frostnip usually occurs in extreme cold temperatures where there is a
significant wind chill and may only take a few minutes of exposure to set in. If you
suspect frostnip, warm the affected area immediately (put fingers under warm water or
even in a warm part of the body such as armpits). If this is caught early on, you can
expect full recovery. The second stage is called superficial frostbite. At this stage, the
skin will appear stark white and bloodless but will still be soft to the touch. The white
color indicates that the tissue under the skin has started to freeze. After 1-2 days of
exposure, you will start to see large blisters appear which will eventually become
adense, black scar called eschar. Once the frostbite reaches this stage, it usually takes a
few weeks before the eschar is replaced by new skin. The final stage is called deep
frostbite and is considered a serious (and rare) condition requiring immediate medical
attention. The skin will turn a deep red or purple color because the tissue underneath
will be completely frozen. In addition, the skin will be cold to the touch and the person
will lose feeling of the affected area. This condition leads to deep tissue damage and
could result in amputation.
Which of the following is a result of deep frostbite?
Choice 1
The affected area becomes red and painful.
Choice 2
A thick black scar develops.
Choice 3
The affected area turns a dark purple.
Choice 4
It almost never leads to amputation.
Choice 5
The skin appears white and bloodless.

Passage
Judy Smith couldn't believe that great $10 microwave oven ("It works!") hadn't sold as
of early Thursday afternoon, but then she wondered if maybe bargain hunters hadn't
spotted it on the garage floor. That's the kind of thing people have to consider when
having a garage sale. Not only do you have to clean out your garage, but you need some
kind of system to put your merchandise in the best light, price it fairly but reasonably,
and then decide what to do with the leftovers. Some people have a garage sale every two
years, with a specific goal in mind. This year, the Jones family sold their old lawn
mower and plan to buy a new one with the garage sale profits. They keep a box in their
house with prospective items for the garage sale, so they do not have to scrounge for
items the night before the sale.
What does the article recommend doing before you have a garage sale?
Choice 1
Put prices on all items.
Choice 2
Put your heaviest merchandise (like microwave ovens) on the garage floor.
Choice 3
Sell old lawnmowers so you can afford new ones.
Choice 4
Shine your best light on your best merchandise.
Choice 5
Present your merchandise well, price it fairly, and be prepared if it
doesn't sell.

Passage
The American burying beetle feeds primarily on carrion. Dead bodies of small
vertebrates are buried by the beetles and later serve as food for hatching larvae. The
young beetles receive a great deal of parental care, which is critical for their survival.
Controversy has surrounded this interesting insect since its listing as an endangered
species. Its decline has been attributed to a variety of factors, including disappearance of
old-growth deciduous forests, rural electrification, decreasing populations of the small
mammals and birds necessary for successful rearing of its larvae, and competition with
vertebrate scavengers. Many argue the beetle is much more widespread than recent
studies suggest. These large, black-and-orange beetles were once found in 32 states and
Canada, but are now known only in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Rhode Island.
Specimens have been documented in nine Arkansas counties, with the largest numbers
in Fort Chaffee and the Ouachita National Forest. Fire, flooding, pesticide applications,
and changing agricultural practices threaten the species.
What factors contribute to the decline in numbers of the American burying
beetle?
Choice 1
Rural electrification and decreasing populations of small mammals.
Choice 2
Increase of old-growth deciduous forests.
Choice 3
Decreasing small mammal populations and increasing bird populations.
Choice 4
Decreasing bird populations and loss of old-growth deciduous forests.
Choice 5
Decreasing populations of small vertebrate scavengers.

In the mid-1800s, John J. Audubon described the red-cockaded woodpecker as
abundant in Southern pine forests. Today, 10,000 to 14,000 remain, living in a
fragmented range in the southeastern U.S. Unlike other woodpeckers, the red-cockaded
roosts in cavities in live pines. It needs 80 to 120 year-old pines for its cavities, and
extensive pine and pine-hardwood forests to meet its foraging requirements. Much of the
Southeast has been cleared for agriculture. Many remaining pine forests are unsuitable
for the red-cockaded woodpecker. Each year, more areas become unsuitable. Because of
the drastic loss and continued decline of habitat, the bird is endangered. In 1994, 157
active clusters (groups of cavity trees) were found in Arkansas --- 121 on private lands,
35 on federal land (primarily Felsenthal NWR), and one on state property. Most are in
southern counties. For the species to survive, private landowners must take positive
steps to aid its recovery. Fortunately, that's beginning to happen. In 1993, the Georgia-
Pacific Company established a landmark conservation agreement with the Fish and
Wildlife Service to protect the woodpecker on thousands of acres of company land.
Other companies have established similar agreements. The species has also responded
favorably to artificial cavity and translocation programs.
What is the main point of this article?
Choice 1
The woodpecker's requirement is for 80 to 120 year-old pine trees.
Choice 2
To describe the cavities in live pines required by the woodpeckers.
Choice 3
To inform us of steps that can be taken to help the woodpeckers survive.
Choice 4
To inform us of the decline in population of red-cockaded woodpeckers.
Choice 5
The clearing of the old pine trees is for agricultural purposes.

If you've ever taken the time to visit a florist shop, you know that visiting one is a
real treat. If you're in a hurry to buy flowers and continue running whatever errands
you may have, you're missing out on the best part. As soon as you walk through the door,
the fresh aroma of greens and blooms enters your nose. The air is filled with other lovely
scents, too. When you stop and take a look around, you can see the bright colors of
flowers on display. There are pinks and oranges, reds and yellows, blues and purples,
and even whites. There are so many colors to see, you may need to sit down and take a
break from it all. Some florist shops even have a fountain in one corner. It's nice to sit
down for a while and just watch and listen to the water pour over the rocks into the bowl
at the bottom. So, just remember this saying next time you pass by a florist shop: In life,
it's always good to stop and smell the roses.
What is the main idea of the passage above?
Choice 1
You can sit down in a florist shop.
Choice 2
There are many colorful flowers for sale at a florist shop.
Choice 3
Florist shops are not useful for doing anything except buying flowers.
Choice 4
Some florist shops have fountains on display.
Choice 5
Florist shops are a fun and relaxing place to visit.

Wanted: one boys' soccer coach, three girls' soccer coaches, two cross country
coaches...So goes the battle at the high school office as they try to fill their coach-advisor
rosters for the 1999-2000 school year. "This is typical," said the activities director for
the school. "We had all the positions filled during the first year I became athletic
director. But since then, we've had 15-16 openings each year."What makes this difficult
is that some teachers who coach don't know their availability until the last minute.
When that happens, the school must scramble to look for coaches a week before practice
is scheduled to start.
What is the main point of this article?
Choice 1
Coaches are also teachers whose classes conflict with coaching.
Choice 2
The school is looking for more coaches.
Choice 3
Teachers are too busy to become coaches as well.
Choice 4
The school always fills the coaching positions at the last minute.
Choice 5
The students need coaches to become better athletes.

What is the main idea of this body of text?
Choice 1
Chefs have become very creative at making pizzas as a direct result of
trying to appeal to the consumer who would otherwise prefer delivery.
Choice 2
Because of the use of whole wheat crusts, broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts,
and other nutritional items, pizza has become much more popular in North
America.
Choice 3
Home delivery of pizza became very popular in the 1990s.
Choice 4
Over the last three decades, four key factors have led to the current
state of pizza in North America.

One of the reasons that eggs are such a popular choice for breakfast is the numerous
alternatives for preparation. Poaching is one of the easiest methods for cooking eggs.
The only ingredients that are needed are a shallow pan, eggs, water, and vinegar
(optional). To begin preparation, use a shallow pan because it is easier to maneuver the
eggs in and out of the hot water. Pour water into the pan until it is approximately 2-3
inches deep. One suggestion for making the egg whites firm is to add some vinegar to
the water. Turn on the heat. Once the water starts to boil, reduce the heat to avoid
damaging the eggs while they cook. To add the eggs, first break each egg individually
into a small demitasse cup. Place the cup in the water while tipping it so the egg is
immersed in the water. Turn the cup upside down so the whites do not spread
throughout the water. No more than three eggs should be poached at once using this
method. Otherwise, the eggs may stick together. As soon as the eggs are added to the
water, take the pan away from the heat. Set the timer to 3-4 minutes, since that is how
long they will need to poach. If you notice the yolks are not cooking within that time-
frame, spoon some water over them. When the egg whites are firm, remove them from
the water using a spoon. Place the eggs on a paper towel to soak up the extra water.
Serve the poached eggs on toast or with hollandaise sauce on top. It is recommended
that the eggs be served on warm plates.
When poaching an egg, what should you do immediately after adding all of
the eggs to the pan?
Choice 1
Let the eggs poach for three or four minutes.
Choice 2
Make sure that the yolks are cooking.
Choice 3
Boil the water.
Choice 4
Add vinegar.
Choice 5
Remove the pan from the heat.

Furbies: the next obsession? Produced by Tiger Electronics, each robotic creature is
different from the next. Maybe that's why they are so popular with young children. A
Furby is an 8 inch tall, pudgy robot with an attitude. The sickeningly cute fur balls can
rock back and forth, open and close their mouths, wiggle their ears, and blink their
eyes, not to mention talk. Furbies have an incredibly large vocabulary for a toy, and
they're not afraid to speak up whenever they feel like it. Phrases like "Party! Boogie!"
and "Hey! Lights up, please!" have captured the hearts of kids around the U.S., and
made adults across the country begin to wonder whether the Furbies will ever shut up.
A Furby begins its "life" speaking only Furbish, the imaginary language of the toys.
After a child plays with it (by tickling it, petting it, talking to it, or picking it up) it can
learn some English words.
What is the main idea of this passage?
Choice 1
A Furby is an 8 inch tall robot with an attitude.
Choice 2
Kids love Furbies, but adults think they are annoying.
Choice 3
