    HARI RAYA PUASA

Hari Raya Puasa is the most important Muslim festival of

the year. The Muslims celebrate Hari Raya Puasa to mark the

end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. It is a time when

Muslims abstain from drinking water and eating anyfood during the period from sunrise to sunset.

The Muslims pray at noon either at the mosque

or in a special prayer room. They must face the holy

city Mecca when they pray. Every evening, the Muslims

break their fast by offering prayers at the mosque.

During Ramadan, around one or two weeks before Hari Raya Puasa, shops in Geylang

will be crowded with Muslim customers buying all kinds of goodies from clothes and

foodstuff to toys for the children.

On the eve of Hari Raya, it is customary for the Muslims in the neighbourhood to

prepare food and feast together. The spirit of gotong-royong (working together) is

evidently shown from this special dinner. From dawn till late at night, they will be busy

cooking their favourite food, such as ketupat, satay and other curry dishes.

On Hari Raya Puasa, thousands of Muslims all over the island put on their new

clothes and attend mosque services. After the prayers, all Muslims will return to their

parents homes to pay respect to their parents. At home, different kinds of cakes and

other delicacies are specially prepared for the occasion. Friends who are not Muslims are

return to their parents homes for a grand feast. Everyonelooks forward to a new and prosperous year ahead and no one

is allowed to mention unlucky words as this may bring bad

    luck to the family.

Red papers with auspicious words are pasted on doors

as symbols of good fortune. After the dinner, parents

distribute hong bao or red packets containing money to their children, signifying the

hope that they will have enough money to spend throughout the coming year.

A few decades ago, fire crackers were set off to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

It was meant to chase away evil spirits. But this is now forbidden in some countries as fire

    crackers are dangerous.

Many old customs are still being practiced by the Chinese during the Chinese New
