PASTOR’S CORNER Spirituality of St. Francis de Sales – “Self-Purification” According to St. Francis de Sales, “Devotion must begin with self-purification”. The aim of devotion is to reach heaven; to be the spouse of Christ and hence, whoever wants to seek the honor of being a spouse of Christ has to strip off the old self and be clothed in the new. The first step towards spiritual health is to be purified from sinful dispositions and this is a process. St. Paul and some other saints like, St. Catherine of Genoa, St. Mary Magdalene etc., were gifted with the grace to experience instant purification. This is miraculous and extraordinary in the order of grace. It is to the Lord to grant such graces. Not receiving such grace must not make us despair, instead make us courageous and patient. It is sad to see some people who finding themselves subject to many imperfections after practicing devotion a few times begin to be anxious, upset and discouraged. They will be overwhelmed with the temptation to give up. They are in greater danger that they will be freed of the imperfections on the first day of their purification. The practice of self-purification is a lifelong process and is a constant spiritual battle. “In this Spiritual struggle, we may be wounded”. These wounds and failures make us humble and humility is the virtue we need to fight our imperfections with acceptance and courage. Imperfections and venial sins will not take away our spiritual life, but mortal sins do. Let us not give up fighting against our imperfections because, our greatest perfection consists in fighting against our imperfections. Let us remember we only win as long as we have the courage to fight and the moment we give up, we lose. “Have patience with all things, but first of all with yourself” St. Francis de Sales

World Youth Day UNITE is a national young adult (18 to 39) and young family festival where thousands will gather in Washington, D.C. for amazing worship, inspiring talks, engaging break out groups, incredible music with Audrey Assad and Tony Melendez, and more. Young adults and young families will gather this summer for inspiring TED-style talks by dynamic Catholic bishops, inspiring multicultural entertainment, and engaging break-out groups focused on our God-given identity ...and purpose. At the heart of the event, there will be amazing worship and incredible opportunities for prayer and the sacraments. This event will be similar to the international world youth day experience, but at a national level during the off years of the international World Youth Day. As such, the festival this year will reflect upon the national World Youth Day theme chosen by Pope Francis himself, "The Mighty One Has Done Great Things for Me and Holy is His Name." This will take place at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine Building & Grounds on Saturday, July 22, 2017. For more information and to register, visit: https://www.wydunite.com/ For information about carpooling with other young adults from our area, contact [email protected].
