  • My dear friends in Christ, Our parish festival is coming up! This year we celebrate 40 years of existence as a parish community. The Festival Committee has been very busy trying to put together a great celebration. We will have many activities throughout the year. We started with our T-Shirt Design Contests. So far we have about 15 de-signs submitted to the office. This coming week we will announce the winning design. Exciting year for us! And of course for our diocese as well! This weekend our new bishop is being ordained! We rejoice and we give thanks to God for his kindness and faithfulness. He is a God who revealed himself in three Persons: Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit! This Sunday we celebrate this feast, this mystery-----but more importantly the love of God! Someone once said, “I don’t want too many mysteries. I only want his love”! It is often said that today’s feast is the only one that celebrates a doctrine rather than an event. It is true that the Holy Trinity is the most difficult doctrine. But we need to remember that the Bible does not teach a doctrine when speaking about God! Rather it tells us in many stories that our God is infinite-----that he is indeed a loving Father and at the same time the very powerful Creator of heaven and earth. God be-came a man in Jesus Christ who is Son and who is one with the father. And this Son speaks about the Holy Spirit, sent by the Father and Him. Every time we gather in our celebrations we acknowledge, we honor and we celebrate the reality of the three Persons in one God! So the stories of the Bible reveal to us the God as a community of love. In God’s three Persons, the Father’s love is fully accepted and offered by the Son and their mutual per-sonal love is expanded by the Holy Spirit into a perfect community of love! So God’s love is experienced in this wonderful relationship of the three Persons: Father, Son and the Holy Spirit! St. Augustine’s once said that it is in “loving relationship” that we experience the Trinity of Persons! Jesus said in the Gospel of John, “Love one another!” As we celebrate and give thanks to God for this great feast of the Church, we also give thanks to God for Fr. Mel Serraon. He is leaving us at the end of this month to continue his ministry in the Philippines. We wish him our best wishes! We will pray for him that he will have the courage to proclaim the good news----and be one of mind and heart ----and that he will live in peace through the wonderful grace of our God. Personally I thank him for presence in our community! With thanks and praise, we celebrate…… In love, Fr. Geoffrey

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s feast, extending a dimension of Easter joy into Ordinary Time, reminds us that every aspect of worship centers on the mystery of God in three per-sons. At baptism, we are initiated into Christ and the Spirit. The Creed we recite at Mass every Sunday has its roots in the ancient celebration of baptism, when a new believer was questioned at the edge of the waters of the font with three questions: Do you believe in God, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit? Three ques-tions, three affirmations, three immersions into the saving waters. Because every liturgy abounds with references to the Trinity, not only in words but in blessings by the sign of the cross, this feast was not easily accepted into the calendar. Pope Alexander in the eleventh century remarked that the liturgy is so laden with praise of the Trinity that there was no need for a special feast. Two hundred years later, while in exile in France, Pope John XXII proclaimed the feast, but it was not until 1911 that Pope St. Pius X gave it status as a solemnity. A favorite image in art for today is the Icon of the Trinity, showing three glorious winged men seated at a table laden with bread and a cup of wine. It recalls Abraham’s hospitality to angels and gives expression to the inner life of God, a life lived in relationship, a life poured out in abundance whenever Christians gather at the table of the Eucharist to give praise to the Fa-ther, in Christ, in the embrace of the Spirit.
