As soon as Jesus began to describe the vineyard – fenced around, a winepress dug and tower built – his audience would have immediately known that he was reflecting the Isaiah description of Israel as the vineyard of the Lord. Isaiahs condemnation of Israel in that passage is so strong that one can almost imagine Jesusaudience cringing in anticipation of where this story was leading. The imagery Jesus used would have been so familiar to his audience that it was almost mundane, and yet Jesus, as usual, gives the image a twist. He describes a vineyard owner whose tenant farmers rebel, beat and murder his servants. Any one of these acts was punishable by death and the audience may well have expected the story to end there. And yet the landowner sends further messengers – hopeful of a change of heart from the tenants and allowing them the opportunity to do what is right. After these messengers are also murdered, the landowner sends his own son to collect the harvest from the tenants. Jesus, of course, is drawing on the familiar image of Israel as the vineyard of the Lord. God, the landowner, has entrusted this beautifully prepared land to the people of Israel and yet they have taken ownership for themselves and forgotten their Lord. Messengers, in the form of prophets, have been sent to call the people back to God but they were ignored and even murdered. Now, the Son has been sent to the people and received much the same response. When Jesus asks his audience of chief priests and elders what the landowner should do, they are acutely aware that he is asking them how God should deal with them. Have you thought? The benevolent landowner One of the images from this gospel that would have been puzzling to the audience, and may have tipped them off that Jesus was telling a parable with a particular message, is the image of the landowner being incredibly benevolent and tolerant of his rebellious tenants. Jesusaudience would have known that the law was always on the side of a landowner over his tenants. Any misdeed by a tenant farmer would have been dealt with swiftly and severely and yet the landowner in Jesusstory (God) is almost unbelievably patient and prepared to give the tenants every opportunity to do the right thing. REFLECTION ON THE GOSPEL by Greg Sunter

This week’s gospel must be read in conjunction with the first reading (Isaiah 5: 1 - 7) and the responsorial psalm, because the message of these passages is implicit in the parable told by Jesus. As soon as Jesus began to describe the vineyard – fenced around, a winepress dug and tower built – his audience would have immediately known that he was reflecting the Isaiah description of Israel as the vineyard of the Lord. Isaiah’s condemnation of Israel in that passage is so strong that one can almost imagine Jesus’ audience cringing in anticipation of where this story was leading.

Jesus’ audience would have known that the law was always on the side of a landowner over his tenants. Any misdeed by a tenant farmer would have been dealt with swiftly and severely and yet the landowner in Jesus’ story (God) is almost unbelievably patient and prepared to give the tenants every opportunity to do the right thing.

FEAST OF ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI (October 4th)

St Francis of Assisi (born 1181/82 - died October 3, 1226) is the patron saint of Italy, and is recognised by most of us as the patron saint of all animals and of the environment. In 1979, Pope John Paul II officially proclaimed St Francis of Assisi as patron of ecology.

After hearing the voice of God Francis renounced his life of luxury, all his worldly goods and family ties to embrace a life of poverty. He was poor only that he might be Christ-like. Above all, his deep sense of brotherhood under God embraced his fellow men, for “he considered himself no friend of Christ if he did not cherish those for whom Christ died.” His devotion to God was expressed through his love for all of God's creation, recognizing it as another manifestation of the beauty of God. He believed all animals are God's creatures, and considered nature and all creation as the mirror of God, and as so many steps to God. In a nutshell, St Francis devoted his life to living the gospel, summed up in the charity of Jesus and perfectly expressed in the Eucharist. He founded the Franciscan orders, including one for women, which became known as the Poor Clares. Later in life, Francis reportedly received a vision that left him with the stigmata of Christ - marks which resembled the wounds Jesus Christ suffered when he was crucified - making Francis the first person to receive such holy wounds. He was canonized as a saint on July 16, 1228, only 2 years after his death, by his former protector, Pope Gregory IX. In 2013, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio chose to honour Saint Francis by taking his name, becoming Pope Francis.

The “Prayer of St. Francis” reflects the spirit and outlook of the man for whom it is named. The prayer is a petition to God that we might live up to the true way of being-in-the-world that God intends for the human family.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console,

to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

JOKE OF THE DAY Back to schoolwork in the classroom...

REFLECTION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

by Lisa-Marie Calderone-Stewart

This parable couldn’t be more obvious. The vineyard owner’s son is killed by the tenants, so then the vineyard owner will lease the vineyard to different people who will care for the grapes in an honest and respectable way, in memory of his son who died. Jesus switches symbols from grapes to bricks, and then emphasises how the cornerstone is the very stone that was initially rejected by the builders of the structure. Jesus challenges us to look deeply into this symbolism. Who are the rejected bricks and stones at your school? Are there any outcast students who are mocked by others? Why are certain people judged to be more popular or less popular than others? What would Jesus say about the value of less popular individuals? How would your reaction to them be different if you took this Gospel message seriously? Are you going to change your reaction to them? Why or why not? Who are the newer people that lease the land and help to harvest the grapes? Are you in this category? Who are the tenant farmers? Who are the builders who dislike the cornerstone?

VIQUEQUE SUNDAY

Today is the first Sunday of the month and we remember and pray for our Partner Parish of Mary Immaculate in Viqueque. Earlier this year, at a parish Mass held on March 1, 2020, we celebrated 10 years of partnership with the faith community of Mary Immaculate in Viqueque.

About Viqueque

Viqueque is a city in the south-east of Timor-Leste, 183 km from Dili. It is the capital of the district of Viqueque. The city has a population of 22,000 and the district has approximately 62,000 inhabitants. Viqueque is remote. It takes up to 8 hours to drive from Dili; during the wet season it can be cut off for weeks. Viqueque is poor, employment is virtually unobtainable and subsistence farming is how most people survive. Electricity is only available to those who have access from 7pm to 11pm and there is no sanitation system. The Parish of Mary the Immaculate is an old Catholic Mission parish which has two sub-parishes – Viqueque and Lacluta. It has 21 Mass centres, spread within the two districts, with a total of 39,000 parishioners (based on the 2009 Parish census). 1200 parishioners are attending the seven local Catholic schools.

Contributions to Viqueque Partnership Program are welcomed at any time. These may take the form of one-off or regular donations. Visit our parish website for more information or click the link provided for more details. http://www.stmarysgeelong.com.au/partner_parish_of_viqueque.html You can also call the Parish Office: 5222 1977 if you wish to support this vibrant developing community.
