Reflection on the Gospel By Greg Sunter

This week’s gospel passage is one of many within Matthew’s gospel that

show Jesus at odds with the religious authorities of his day. The picture of

the religious leaders that comes through Matthew’s gospel is one of

hypocrisy. Jesus is frequently portrayed as criticising the leaders for holding

too strongly to the letter of the law and ignoring the spirit of the law and the

call to compassion. This week’s passage has Jesus seeking the opinion of

the chief priests and elders on a hypothetical situation (a common style of

debating a point of law in the Jewish tradition). He describes two sons, each

asked by their father to go and work in the family vineyard. The first says

‘No’ but later does his father’s bidding. The second says ‘Yes’ but doesn’t

follow through on his commitment.

Jesus is criticising the religious leaders of his time who, with their words,

said ‘Yes’ to God but by their actions said ‘No’. He most certainly would

have upset the leaders by telling them that tax collectors and prostitutes

would enter the kingdom of God before them. Whilst these tax collectors and

prostitutes were regarded by the religious authorities as ‘sinners’

beyond redemption, Jesus holds them up in the image of the first son of the

story. Although they may have said ‘No’ to God through their poor choices,

ultimately they are saying ‘Yes’ to God in their acceptance of Jesus and the

message of the kingdom of God. On the other hand, the leaders have said

‘Yes’ to God publicly through abiding by all the religious laws and

maintaining a ‘religious profile’ but in their hearts and actions they have not

truly said ‘Yes!’

Living the Gospel – Saying ‘Yes!’

In many ways, it is easy to say ‘Yes’ and not really mean it. Some people do

it all the time in their lives. They say ‘Yes’ when they have no intention at all

of following through on their commitment. It’s easy to say ‘Yes’ and not

mean it when it comes to faith as well. It’s pretty easy to turn up at Church

on a Sunday and be seen to be doing the ‘right’ thing. But if our faith doesn’t

change the way we live, then maybe we’re really saying ‘No’ to God.

A REFLECTION from Fr Jim & Fr Joseph

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A

This Sunday’s gospel is a timely reminder about the benefits of membership in the Church and the responsibilities that go along with it. This particular gospel always calls to mind for me an old T.V. advertisement for the “American Express” charge card. The advertisement starred the legendary American character actor, Karl Malden, in the guise of one of his Police character roles. He is situated in an airport and an unsuspecting traveller has had his wallet stolen. Karl Malden then spruiks the benefits of having an American Express card with the catch cry, “Membership has its privileges, and never leave home without it.” Yes I am a product of the T.V. generation and my parents would say that I probably watched too much T.V. during my childhood and teenage years. My confreres in the seminary wouldn’t bother to look at the T.V. guide they would just ask me what was on T.V. that evening. However, that being said, there is a lot of good viewing on Netflix during this COVID experience to get through the lockdown.

Returning to the gospel, the parable Jesus tells is meant to be a challenge to the existing order to shake people out of their complacency and sense of entitlement. The owner of the vineyard is a fair and just employer. He treats his workers equally and shows no favouritism. His generous nature is evident when he pays his labourers the same wage regardless of how long they worked. This is the crux of the story. Those who were employed first and worked a full day expected more, even though they accepted the agreed sum of one denarius. They complain when those who worked for lesser hours received the same amount. They believed that they were entitled to more.

The story is about generosity and acceptance. The owner of the vineyard symbolises the Father reaching out and embracing all people. God is all loving and accepting of people at whatever time in their lives they choose to turn to and receive God’s love. This is the essence of the Church people are free to choose or to reject the membership offered to them. People are free to leave and return of their own volition.

For those of us who are sometimes styled “womb to tomb” Catholics, we have been in receipt of the blessings of the Church which our membership has provided. Those who come later to the community of the “People of God” will still receive the same benefits because God has no favourites. God will love the greatest sinner as much as the greatest saint. God’s love is not something that we are entitled too. God’s love is a free gift, it is called grace. We don’t earn it, we can’t work for it and we don’t deserve it. It is God’s gift to us. Because we receive it freely, we share it freely with others. This is both the privilege and the responsibility membership of the “People of God”, the Church.

REFLECTION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE by Lisa-Marie Calderone-Stewart These are fierce words that Jesus gives us: that tax collectors and prostitutes are entering heaven in greater numbers than are priests and appointed elders! But Jesus is talking about priests and elders who are like the child who outwardly says, ‘Yes!’ to God, yet doesn’t really do God’s work. The tax collectors and prostitutes are like the child who outwardly says, ‘No!’ to God, yet does the best he or she can in any situation. At home, which child are you more like? Are you more likely to say you’ll do something, and then not do it? Or are you more likely to talk back to your parents, but later do what they ask anyway? Or do you do both? Explain your answer and give some examples. Do you respond at school in the same way as you do at home, or differently? How are you at work? Are you more likely to say yes and not do the task, or are you more likely to say no but then do the work anyway? What might Jesus be saying to you with this parable?

SOCIAL SERVICES SUNDAY 20th September, 2020

A time to reflect and give thanks

On this day we are invited to give thanks and pray for all

who stand with and provide support to those who are

marginalised and vulnerable within our communities.

We recognise with deep gratitude, those working within

Catholic Social Services Victoria (CSSV), and we give

thanks for all in our parishes, who are so often at the

forefront of providing practical support and care to those

in need within their local communities, and beyond. We

call to mind the 2020/21 Social Justice Statement brought

out recently by the Australian Catholic bishops, ‘To Live

Life to the Full: Mental Health in Australia Today’

[link: https://socialjustice.catholic.org.au/wp-content/

uploads/2020/07/Social-Justice-Statement-2020-

WEB.pdf] and also draw your attention to a recent event

hosted by CSSV, ‘Counselling and Therapeutic Support in

a Time of COVID’ [link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=0gYZ0MzkEn8&feature=youtu.be ] which provided an

opportunity to become more familiar with mental health

services, and how to practically reach out for or point to

assistance. Website: https://www.css.org.au

Prayer for Courage and Compassion

Compassionate God, Your unconditional love for all

inspires our hearts and empowers our actions

for those who are most vulnerable.

May we boldly and humbly serve one another

and be steadfast in our work for justice for all people.

Keep our hearts open to the joys and the hopes of our

world, and our ears ready to hear your call

to truth, justice and reconciliation.

Let us continue to draw inspiration and strength

from those, like St Mary MacKillop, on whose shoulders

we stand. We gather in Jesus’ name to be nourished

and to move forward together in hope and joy. Amen.
