3. Outlook settings

The first time you open Outlook your mail server and notebook will implement a number of

actions automatically. Make sure you are logged into the TU/e network. You can open

Outlook by the icon on the desktop (Microsoft Outlook 2010). Outlook will be set upcorrectly and you will then be able to open it without a network connection, so that you can

work in it offline. You do not need to read the rest of this document if you had a network

connection the first time you opened Outlook.

If you did not have a connection to the TU/e network the first time you opened Outlook, you

should read the rest of this document.

3.1  No network connection the first time Outlook was opened

Outlook searches for an Exchange server, but cannot find it because you do not have a

network connection. You receive the following message:

Click Cancel.

Open Outlook again when you do have a network connection. It will then be set up correctly. You do not then have to read the rest of the document.

If you select Work Offline in the above window, you will receive the message: Unable to open

your default e-mail folders.

The following section describes how to rectify this problem.

How to put a notebook in a domain Page 11

4. How to put a notebook in a domain

What to do when you removed the user/computer from the TUE domain.

Make sure your notebook is connected to a network cable (not wireless).

Log in as an administrator (password is the password from the pincode letter from

the Student Service Centrum or the password that you last chose when imaging the

notebook).

Right click the icon ‘Computer’ and choose ‘Properties’.

Under the category ‘Computer name, domain and workgroup settings’, click ‘Change

Settings’.

Make sure that the computer name is your s-number. The computer name can be

changed by clicking the button ‘Change’. If the computer name has been changed a

reboot is required but windows will notify you of this.  Click the button ‘Network ID’.

Click on ‘Next’ during the next 3 screens until you reach the screen ‘Join a Domain or

Workgroup’

Enter your s-number as username and under password the accompanying password.

The domain is TUE. Click ‘Next’.

The next question is ‘An account for this computer has been found in the domain

TUE. Would you like to use this ? ‘ Click ‘Yes’.

The next screen is ‘Add the following user….’. Enter your own NT-account name

here. Make sure that under username: your s-number is filled in and under

domain: TUE. Click ‘Next’.

In the following screen you will be asked in which group the user may be placed.

Choose ‘Administrator and click ‘Next’.

If you receive a message that the user cannot be added because ‘The trust

relationship with the primary domain controller failed, redo all steps starting from

‘Network ID’. If it still does not work, wait a few minutes and then try again. This is

not a user-error but a Windows synchronization issue.

The system will now notify you that it needs to be rebooted so changes can beprocessed. Click ‘Finish’. Click ‘Ok’ in the ‘Properties’ screen and the system will ask

you to restart. Close all your programs and click ‘Restart Now’.

VPN-client Page 12

5. VPN-client

The abbreviation ‘VPN’ means ‘Virtual Private Network’. The following web page has

information on this network service:

http://w3.tue.nl/en/services/dienst_ict/services/services_tds/vpn/

To get to the VPN click on the icon ‘TUe VPN’ on the desktop.

If you still don’t get to the VPN, use the Cisco VPN-client rather than the Windows VPN-

client.

Start – All Programs – Cisco Systems VPN Client
