At the same time, an energy process framework has to

offer investment security. The existing IT infrastructure

has to integrate into the network without problems.

And given the volumes of information it contains, the

network also has to be able to offer added value for

future applications.

Managing complex networks transparently

For more than three decades, InterSystems has spe-

cialized in data and processes, networking and inte-

gration and people and their access to relevant

information. Our focus has been on industries with

sensitive data, as well as all application areas with

complex data and integration models, mass data,

time series, and their evaluation.

2

The energy market is changing. The growing decentralization of energy generation, as well as energy process management that is becoming more complex, require sustainable and future-centric IT solutions that also deliver considerable cost benefits.

Intelligent management solutions for intelligent energy grids

Add to this the requirements associated with EU di-

rectives, and the implementation of unbundling as

stipulated by the German Federal Network Agency.

It is estimated that the worldwide energy generation

industry will invest almost 675 billion euros over the

next 20 years in smart meters and improvements in

communication, distribution, and transport using

smart grids. These investments will create an inter-

active grid which will fundamentally change the

processes in the electricity market.

The smart grid will generate much higher volumes of

data and establish new requirements in terms of

processing speed. Active control of generating units

and the demand side, flexible changing of providers,

even multiple providers – the smart grid requires

smart answers. Intelligent solutions are also essential

for ensuring compliance with EU directives and re-

quirements that apply to unbundling as stipulated by

the German Federal Network Agency.

Process-driven IT supports the change to the smart grid: the energy process framework

The answers to these challenges call for an energy

process framework (EPF), a structure which, at its core,

has the capabilities required for expansion, cooper-

ation, and adaptation in the face of requirements and

processes that have yet to be defined.

Technologies and solutionsfrom InterSystems help you to:

› actively shape the future

› create tomorrow’s structures and processes today

› successfully weather increasing competition

› withstand rationalization and cost pressure

› meet new and additional legal requirements quickly

and cost-effectively

› adhere to changing and new quality and reporting

standards

Software technologies from InterSystems open new opportunities. This is the funda-

mental difference compared to other approaches, because the technologies enable

companies to:

› integrate existing software applications and business processes and link them together,

with the goal of structured, comprehensive data communication

› provide business and technical data, as well as data from distributed systems, on

a single platform for real-time evaluation and control

› implement highly scalable software applications for requirement profiles. Their

performance has been designed and verified to meet future requirements for time

series, mass data, or complex data relations.

InterSystems is ranked as a “Leader” and “Innovator” on a regular basis by leading

market research firms. InterSystems applications built an InterSystems software in

health care have also won awards.

Many of our customers rank among the most successful in their segment, from the

highly specialized to NASDAQ and DAX.

Technical development

At the same time, consumers and politicians expect

that supplies continue to be guaranteed, and that

small suppliers be treated fairly when producers

are added or eliminated based on demand. Today’s

master data structures are not designed in even the

most rudimentary manner for the processes, formats,

and protocols required. Today, almost 80% of all data

are in unstructured form can only be processed in

real time at disproportionately high cost and high

levels of automation.

Interdisciplinary aspects

The requirements extend beyond generation and

compensation. There are already disputes over the

impact the boom in biogas plants is having on the

environment and food prices. Geological information

and weather data also have to be available in real

time for control and forecast purposes. The complex

challenges of a smart grid can only be solved using

an interdisciplinary approach.

“...a sizeable number of electric cars combined could then act as the equivalent of a large electrical accumulator in the ‘Internet of Energy,’ temporarily covering peak load demands.”*

Sensible economics and technology:seamless integration of all information systems

There is a long way to go from energy provision as it

is in Germany today to get to the “Internet of Energy,”

as outlined by the German Federal Government. But

the concept behind this smart grid already enables

requirement profiles to be created and oriented to-

ward the challenges of a market that foresees more

participants, easier changing of suppliers, and the

dynamic interaction among all participants. These

challenges can be divided into three broad subject

areas:

Legal and structural policy requirements

The energy provision of tomorrow will see new par-

ticipants. Whether it is the aggregator presented in

the E-energy concept, or whether the decentralized

producers organize in a different manner, is of lesser

importance.

As the protector of equal opportunity, the Federal

Network Agency will continue to promote the opening

and liberalization of the energy market. Therefore,

processes such as the dynamic changing of suppliers

and multiple supplier models need to be mapped by

IT and integrated into the accounting structure.

ALMOST 80% OF ALL DATA ArE IN UNSTrUcTUrED FOrM

Only the tiniest fraction of all information is available in a form that easily fits into rows and

columns. So, what should be done with information relevant to you that is found in Microsoft Word

files, handwritten notes, voicemail on a smartphone, e-mails, voice recordings, protocols, satellite

images, sketches, etc.?

With technologies from InterSystems, you can even use these kinds of data to bolster your com-

petitive advantage!

Opportunities in smart grids

Linked functional departments, a 360 degree view of master

data and functional areas within the company – from indi-

vidual plants to the current rates on the electricity exchange.

The current status of all relevant processes is available, as

is fi nance and controlling information aggregated in real

time.

A system that is able to compile basic information from dis-

tributed applications to calculate key data for use not only

for the current process, but also for the process simulation.

This prevents the solution from creating a new bottleneck

somewhere else.

The ability to establish and change processes on a short-

term basis, monitor them with automated alarms, and

seamlessly record the communication between all process

participants creates legal certainty.

A fl exible IT structure that addresses both the foreseeable

requirements of further market liberalization, as well as the

need to compile and transfer information subject to manda-

tory verifi cation from distributed, sometimes standalone

applications, in a manner suitable to the requirements.

One consequence of smart grids is the merging of process

time technology and commercial IT. This requires coopera-

tion and bidirectional communication that is fast, secure,

and low in cost. Most applications are not designed to fulfi ll

communication tasks at all and if they provide some means,

they are not suitable to orchestrate such a large scale net-

work. But an energy process framework is. It is the backbone

of a communications structure that is equally suited to inter-

nal value-added applications, smartphone apps for end cus-

tomers, and coordinating with partner companies.

Optimal enabling technology for an EPF

InterSystems Ensemble® is the optimum basic tech-

nology for an energy process framework – this includes

the combination of all required servers with a devel-

opment and management environment, as well as

InterSystems Ensemble® forms the basis for the holistic concept behind an energy process framework that integrates data and processes across all systems according to business requirements.

Adjust the data flow to your information requirements

The energy process framework (EPF) offers opportuni-

ties for expansion, cooperation, and flexible adapta-

tion to new processes. It is based on the existing IT

architecture, but creates a structured level that

enables value-added applications. They use infor-

mation in distributed applications, compile and per-

manently save the data in a repository, and enable

streamlined, cost-effective programs for company

a high-performance database whose internal struc-

ture is designed for all types of data, including un-

structured data. With its manufacturer-independent

interface connection, Ensemble meets one of the el-

ementary prerequisites for an energy process frame-

work. A comprehensive adapter library and frame-

work is available for standard-based connection to a

broad range of applications (such as SAP), services,

data sources, and technologies. Ensemble thereby re-

duces the costs, time, and risk normally associated

with integration projects. The resulting energy pro-

cess framework offers new processes and data for-

mats for fast integration as well as high levels of

interoperability and investment security. Lastly, it

provides wide-ranging support for current, relevant

development standards, support for the UN Edifact

standard, and for the latest developments in Web

services, such as XML, XPATh, XSLT, SAX, SOAP,

DTDs, and schemas.

Maximum flexibility and scalability

An EPF provides companies with a flexible and easily

expandable system architecture. The development of

new applications and services based on existing sys-

tems can take place if needed according to the defined

standards for service-oriented architectures (SOA).

As an orchestration layer for the EPF, Ensemble

simplifies the seamless adaptation to changes in laws

and regulations, and supports the implementation of

unbundling and client separation. For example, the

business process for supplying customers with elec-

tricity can be established using an energy process

framework, equipped with alarms, and all process

steps documented to ensure proper verification.
