Women in Zimbabwe are bringing hope and opportunity to communities by

starting new small businesses that employ unskilled women and young,

unemployed girls who may otherwise turn to crime.

Sustainable and Self-Funding

A single entrepreneur or group of women from a community can start a new

business using a unique machine made in the UK by ParryCore Ltd. The system

makes over 50 different concrete building materials but for 30% less cost so

products can be sold to local builders for less than market price but at 70%

margin with profits then used to grow the business and create yet more jobs.

Empowering Women

As the units are manually operated they can be taken to any low income

urban or rural site where women from the local community are employed and

given an immediate and badly needed income but also the security of long

term employment, new skills and a chance to climb out of poverty.

As each unit can make a complete range of building products, it can form the

basis of a project to regenerate an entire community including affordable

housing, schools, medical centres and churches

Affordable House Building

Groups of women can work together to use the ParryCore system to

produce everything needed to construct a 3 bedroom family house in less

than three weeks. They engage a local building contractor to undertake the

actual construction work but the contractor’s fees are easily covered by

the 30% reduction in costs achieved by using the ParryCore system. Also,

as the unit can be taken to site and produce materials in situ,

transportation costs are reduced as are losses through breakages.

WHY SHOULD WOMEN GET INVOLVED IN CONSTRUCTION?

Construction is a massively male-dominated business sector but there is no real reason why this should

be so. Yes, men are physically stronger but all that means is that they can carry more bricks! Heavy

manual labor is obviously required to build a house but the success of a construction company is

influenced far more by the following qualities of its management:

Drive and determination to succeed in a male environment

Clarity of thought and communication with supervisory staff

Problem solving and problem resolution skills

Team building skills and the ability to motivate staff

Ability to build relationships based on trust and honesty

If you compare the above skills to those needed to run a family home then it

becomes clear that women actually have these qualities more than many men.

TWO PROJECTS IN ONE INITIATIVE

Building Materials:

The Parry system allows a local entrepreneur or group of women to start a

small business making and selling concrete materials at less than current

market price but still at high margin. Cost of production is reduced by 30%

by applying vibration during casting to expel the air from the mixture

making the final material stronger and cheaper as less cement is required.

Colored dyes can added to produce luxurious products. The unit is designed

to offer ten women local community a job giving them badly needed

income for the family and long term job security.
