Tan Pin Ru was excited about blazing the trail as one of the student pioneers in Economics at nTU’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

She was attracted by the offer of an honours programme that allowed her to specialise in

Economics from Year One. another bonus was the guaranteed hostel accommodation, which would allow her to experience the vibrant campus life at nTU.

Staying at Hall Six on campus turned out to be a memorable experience. Being part of the swimming and cheerleading teams, co-chairing a dinner and dance committee and co-producing a stage production at Raffles Hotel’s Jubilee Hall were just some of Pin Ru’s experiences.

The Hwa Chong Junior College alumnus feels that nTU has given her the university

Sharp as a laser

BEing at nTU has given Tan Hwee Ting many unforgettable moments.

She has led an international committee as President of the Mechanical and aerospace Engineering Club, designed a product and is developing a plan to bring it to market in the Engineering innovation & Design Programme, and represented the university at the Taiwan national Cheng Kung University-TiC (Talentpreneur innovation and Collaboration association) international Design Forum and the nTU-Chiba (Japan) University Joint Design Workshop.

Hwee Ting plans to pursue her PhD programme at nTU, and looks forward to even more fulfilling experiences.

Pioneer Social Sciences graduate

PUT Edbert Jarvis Sie in a physics laboratory, and he becomes, in his words, “a kid happily playing Lego”.

nTU’s School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) has been his playground

for the past few years and he is so enthused with its research facilities that there have been times when he worked overnight in the laser laboratory.

One of only 20 recipients of the University Scholars award, which

honours top all-round graduates and their mentors, Edbert is now employed as a project officer at SPMS, doing research in laser physics.

He is among the first batch of graduates from the pioneer class, graduating a year ahead of their cohort from SPMS.

The nTU aSEan scholar had only one choice — nTU. Says Edbert: “Surely, if i desire to excel, i would follow and learn from the best.”

and nTU offers Edbert a world of opportunities. “The programme exceeded my expectations,” he says. “as a student, i wanted to attend every single class.

“More importantly, the close

interaction with our teachers is hard to find at other institutions.”

He cherishes the invaluable one-to-one sessions with his professors, Professor Lee Soo Ying, Professor alfred Huan and Dr Sum Tze Chien.

They gave him a lot of support when he applied for an exchange programme in Sweden. During the six months spent at the Royal institute of Technology, Edbert attended the 2006 nobel Prize Ceremony in Stockholm.

“Being an NTU student does not restrict my imagination to Singapore. It fulfils my dream of making a difference through my work.”

Choosing to excel

“There is a nurturing touch to the culture at the Nanyang Business School... I have learnt to be assertive yet not domineering, persuasive yet sensitive to the feelings of others.”

FOR Khadijah ab Samat, the national institute of Education (niE), an autonomous institute of nTU, has provided her with more than teacher training. The Lakeside Primary School teacher believes that her varied experiences on the university’s campus can become the basis of lessons for her pupils.

an example is the exposure to a different culture that she gained from inSPirasi, a project spearheaded by the Bachelor of Science Club in which the participants visited schools in indonesia.

Inspired to succeed

“NIE has given me a well-rounded education that has prepared me well for my career. The lecturers have provided me with much guidance, and I feel that I have been stretched beyond my comfort zone in terms of my academic ability.”

Honing her talent

education she wanted — and more. She counts an exchange programme to Tsinghua University in Beijing as one of the highlights.

nTU also enabled Pin Ru to pick up skills that will be useful in her future career. Besides learning from professors whom she describes as “selfless when it comes to sharing their knowledge”, Pin Ru also benefited from the school’s internship programme, which allowed her to work at the government of Singapore investment Corporation.

“The School has definitely prepared us

well through its wide variety of academic modules,” she says.

Last month, Pin Ru started work with the Royal Bank of Scotland. it was one of two job offers she received before completing her final exams.

“It is through all these activities and experiences at NTU that I have grown and learnt tremendously over the past four years.”

“NTU has prepared me to be an engineer and developed me as a well-rounded person. Through the various programmes at NTU, I achieved a global outlook and essential soft skills.”

OnE of the most daunting experiences Lazarus goh had at nTU was organising the inaugural asian Business Case Competition @ nanyang.

“Having tasted international exposure in the competition, we overcame all odds to triumph as a team,” he says.

The first-class honours graduate in accountancy recently joined Temasek Holdings as an investment associate.

When Lazarus opted to study at nTU three years ago, he believed that the choice would give him a good education and open doors to a fruitful career. “it turned out to be the right decision,” he says.

“The programme at RSIS enables me to learn more about terrorism, its ideologies and propaganda, and what its dangers are. I believe we are able to help build a more resilient community in Singapore through the wealth of knowledge gained at RSIS.”

“The overseas exposure that I have been given during my studies at NTU has widened my perspective and knowledge.”
