At Woodside, our social licence to operate is as important as driving shareholder value and delivering safe and reliable production.

While we’re in the business of providing global energy, we recognise the importance of our role in delivering mutual and sustainable social outcomes in the areas in which we operate.

We’ve built genuine relationships with our stakeholders and host communities over more than 60 years. This is represented in our core value of working sustainably – we are here for the long term. We look out for each other, our communities and the environment. As our business seeks to expand across Western Australia and internationally, building relationships and supporting positive outcomes in the community become even more important.

To deliver these outcomes, we work closely with communities, governments and industry to support three key outcome areas. These aim to create opportunities, improve knowledge and build the resilience of the communities where Woodside is active.

We’re proud of the longstanding partnerships we hold with community organisations that continue to deliver outcomes in supporting education and employment, understanding our environment, supporting research and innovation, or contributing to the cultural vibrancy of the communities in which we live and work.

By understanding our stakeholders and working together with not-for-profits, government and industry, we can empower and assist these communities to create long-lasting opportunities.

BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITIES

As an Australian energy company, Woodside has an active role to play in contributing to the wellbeing of our communities and creating a more sustainable future.

We can achieve this by building and maintaining relationships that allow us to engage in real conversations with the local community, and work together to make a difference.

We partner with community, government and industry to support education, from the early years through to employment.

We collaborate with leading experts and agencies to better understand and manage the diverse environments in which we operate.

We innovate with research and technology institutions to develop the scientific breakthroughs of tomorrow.

We support local arts, cultural and infrastructure programs to grow healthy, vibrant and inclusive communities.

By supporting those who support others, we’re building stronger communities.

We aim to build the capacity and capability of the communities in which we work.

Supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

In late 2015, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) came into effect. The 17 SDGs aim to tackle some of the world’s most pressing economic, environmental and social issues.

We have identified five key SDGs for specific focus that best align with our business, in order to maximise our contribution.

We believe there is shared value for our business and our communities by

co-creating opportunities in education, employment and enterprise. To do this, we take the time to improve our knowledge of what’s needed, to understand the environments we work in, to minimise our impacts and maximise the opportunities to work with and support both community and government. This approach helps to build resilience in our host communities so they can take advantage of the opportunities we create.

EDUCATION AND EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

We partner with non-profit organisations, businesses, schools, academic institutions and government to support education, from the early years through to employment.

We are committed to promoting student learning in critical subject areas such as science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) to support our business, our industry and broader society.

Through the Woodside Development Fund, we’re helping children to thrive in their development, learning and life. When a child is able to reach their full potential, it helps to create more resilient communities with sustained employment, economic and social outcomes.

The Woodside Development Fund

Creating opportunities for families in the Dampier Peninsula, Western Australia.

Dampier Peninsula Family Empowerment ProjectWoodside has partnered with Save the Children to deliver the Woombooriny Amboon Angarriiya Partnership Initiative (WAAPI) through the Woodside Development Fund (WDF) since 2014.

The WDF recognises that physical, social and cultural dimensions of childhood, directly impact a person’s ability to achieve their potential throughout their life. WAAPI is an Aboriginal designed and led initiative, using a place based approach to create strong families, strong leaders and strong communities.

Significant progress has been made in 2019, with WAAPI’s Aboriginal governance family empowerment model formalised, which provides a model for a ‘voice’ to facilitate local decision making and ensure Aboriginal-led, designed and delivered positive social change.

In 2019 WAAPI’s Community Navigators, who are locally employed Aboriginal people working as community connectors, advanced their work on tailored and targeted projects, in consultation with their Family Committees. Importantly, and as a demonstration of the critical role the Navigators play, service providers are now consulting with them first to determine how best to deliver services in the region.

WAAPI is positively influencing how Save the Children itself approaches working with communities, in particular the transition to community control and establishing governance structures. Woodside/Save the Children partnership in WAAPI received the Community Partnership Award at the 2019 Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s Resources Sector Awards for Excellence, and an insights paper on the WAAPI Community Navigator model was published by Edith Cowan University’s Nulungu Research Institute.

Supporting STEM Education

Building career pathways across science, technology, engineering and maths.

We are passionate about supporting innovation and technology in Australia. We believe careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are essential to our industry’s future and can lead to a rewarding career.

Woodside supports Scitech's Science After School, a program that provides opportunities for science learning beyond the classroom to practice and enhance knowledge and skills whilst increasing awareness of the relevance of science and technology to our everyday lives. These activities aim to increase interest and participation in STEM for students in upper primary and lower secondary.

The Scitech Gifted and Talented Program is a three-year program that provides opportunities for gifted and talented

students currently in years 7, 8, and 9 to connect with STEM in a community of likeminded young people. The program provides a range of events, activities and newsletters that strengthen interest in STEM and encourage collaboration and networking between students, as well as collaboration and conversation with their parents.

The Woodside Scitech Science Awards provide an opportunity for primary schools across the state to encourage students to become actively engaged with science throughout the year.

To celebrate our twenty year partnership, The Woodside Kaartadjin Koorliny gallery at Scitech will undergo a refresh, with the goal of the gallery to explore and develop 21st century skills through the lens of “Think, Create, Share”.

ENVIRONMENT

We have a long history of collaborating with both government and non-government research organisations, academic institutions and scientific professionals to build our understanding of the diverse environments in which we work.

The scientific data and knowledge collected as a result of our partnerships assists us to evaluate and manage potential impacts and better inform our business and the community.

We share this knowledge transparently with governments, regulators and communities to support better environmental outcomes more broadly.

Ningaloo Turtle Monitoring Program Birdlife Australia

Understanding more about the unique habitat of one of Western Australia’s most precious species.

The Ningaloo coast and Pilbara islands off the north-west coast of Australia are significant nesting areas for green, loggerhead, flat-back and hawksbill turtles. These globally endangered sea turtle species visit Western Australia’s coast during the summer months. The female turtles lay multiple batches of eggs over several weeks and approximately eight weeks later, turtle hatchlings leave the beaches to start their ocean life.

The DBCA (Parks and Wildlife Services in Exmouth) and local Exmouth Cape Conservation Group have been monitoring sea turtles through the volunteer-based Ningaloo Turtle Program for more than 15 years. Woodside has been a supporter for the past eight years, with the program providing valuable long-term data on threatened sea turtle populations.

The research program is aimed at developing the environmental knowledge of the Ningaloo region, a place in which Woodside has operated for more than 30 years. The program is the longest running and largest volunteer-based turtle monitoring program in the southern hemisphere. Results of the 2018 Muiron Islands survey indicate relatively high nesting activity on the islands for at least two species of turtles, the green and loggerhead turtles.

The research improves Woodside’s understanding of the existing environment and key sensitive species in the Ningaloo region, and contributes to a shared goal to better manage the environment.

These surveys were a great example of the Woodside approach in collaborating with long-term environmental science partner Parks and Wildlife Service, DBCA to address gaps in environmental knowledge on sea turtle nesting populations in the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area and Ningaloo Marine Park.

– Denise McCorry, principalenvironment adviser, Woodside.

We recognise the significance of coastal habitats and surrounding waters in supporting bird population survival, focusing on feeding, resting and breeding.

Woodside has partnered with BirdLife Australia to support the migratory shorebirds from Dampier to Geum Estuary in Republic of Korea.

The Geum Estuary is one of the most important sites for shorebirds in the Yellow Sea region and a key refueling habitat for migratory shorebirds that travel on the East Asian Australasian Flyway between Australia and the northern hemisphere.

To date, the program has achieved significant outcomes. These include establishing a baseline for shorebird monitoring at the Geum Estuary, identifying active and potential shorebird

roost sites and feeding areas, and delivering a migratory shorebird monitoring tool and local training workshops.

We continue to support the program in and to date have sponsored Australian Indigenous rangers and university shorebird experts to be involved and share their knowledge and expertise.

We have also sponsored training for the Murujuga Land and Sea Unit to gather shorebird data in the Murujuga National Park within the Dampier Archipelago (located near Karratha) and partnered with the rangers, Pilbara Ports Authority and local industry to host a community bird-watching event in the Murujuga National Park, Western Australia.

TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION

Technology and innovation are crucial to progress – both in our business, and in our lives.

In addition to our programs that foster curiosity and science, technology, engineering and maths skills in the community, we are focused on new ideas and data-driven breakthroughs in response to scientific challenges.

As a business we go further when we combine innovative ideas from our 'own' people with fresh perspectives from outside our industry. One way we collaborate is through the Woodside FutureLab program harnessing expertise from world-class research institutions, start-ups, entrepreneurs and adjacent leading industries. FutureLab is where we come together to think big, prototype small and scale fast.

By harnessing innovation and encouraging a collaborative approach to adopting new technology, we’re helping to shape the right skillsets for the future.

RiverLab - University of Western Australia

Developing innovations in offshore engineering via research, education and outreach.Woodside Innovation Centre – Monash University

Collaborating to build an ecosystem of scientific and technological innovation.

Woodside’s partnership with Monash University has led to the establishment of the Woodside Innovation Centre - a research centre dedicated to enabling academics and students to harness industry expertise. The centre promotes collaborative innovation to solve complex challenges facing our industry and the broader scientific community.

The Woodside Innovation Centre is based at Monash University – Australia’s largest technical university. Monash is also the leading Australian university for material engineering, with one of the oldest departments of this kind globally, established in the 1970s.

The Centre brings together a diverse mix of backgrounds and expertise, focused on researching opportunities for innovation across the oil and energy industry. The researchers specialise in metal and non-metal additive manufacturing, data science and artificial intelligence.

The Centre is attracting and growing a cohort of technology leaders and expert researchers, leveraging the past decade of strong growth by reinvesting in Australian capabilities, talent and technologies to produce disruptive new commercial opportunities for Australia.

Woodside also supports Monash students through student scholarships and funds a Chair of Materials Science at the university.

Part of University of Western Australia’s (UWA) Oceans Institute, the Woodside RiverLab initiative is an exciting collaboration between Woodside and UWA.

RiverLab brings together a community of researchers from diverse disciplines, with state-of-the art equipment, to enable unique field measurements and experiments in the Swan River of Western Australia.

Wind waves in the Swan River are a scale representation of those seen offshore (where oil and gas facilities are located), making the river an affordable experimental location to explore the performance and response of offshore structures temporarily moored.

The Swan River also provides a resource for trialling prototype devices and sensors, such as those used for measuring offshore waves and currents and geotechnical conditions at the river bed, and to monitor aquatic life.

For Woodside, this provides an innovative approach to better understand the marine environments in which we operate, improving offshore facilities design across our business and the broader industry.

RiverLab is also committed to engaging in research and teaching by linking scientists, educators and industry with the community.

The program offers a range of community outreach initiatives to support education and teaching for sustainable ocean future and drive research to address the challenges of deploying new technology in offshore engineering. Through the partnership, education resources have been made available offering opportunities for the creation of new information, data and experiences for students to extend the classroom out into the field.

Woodside also supports UWA through our OceanWorks collaboration, a unique multi-purpose facility at the University’s Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre that is focused on bringing together industry and academia to promote sharing and spark innovation in ocean engineering.
