Community Summary: Spalding County lies on the southern fringes of the Atlanta metropolitan region but is influenced by the region, exchanging residents commuting to employment opportunities, accepting workers traveling from other counties, and sending and receiving goods. Key neighbors include Henry and Clayton counties to the north accessed by US 19/41, Fayette and Coweta counties to the west via SR 92 and SR 16, and Pike and Lamar counties to the south connected by US 19/41. Spalding County lies on the corridor between Atlanta and Macon along I-75. Griffin is approximately 40 miles south of Atlanta and 55 miles north of Macon, signifying a strategic location in north Georgia about 10 miles off I-75 via SR 16. Bolstering Spalding County’s potential for freight activity is its location 20 miles south of Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport and access to I-75 which runs along the far eastern section of the county.
Beyond its commuting and freight roles, other factors impacting transportation in Spalding County include colleges and airports. The study area and points of interest in Spalding County and the City Griffin are shown in Figure 2. Griffin is home to both Southern Crescent Technical College and the University of Georgia Griffin Campus. Griffin-Spalding County has an existing airport and is in the process of developing a new one. Other points of interest include the Spalding Regional Hospital and the Atlanta Motor Speedway, which is located two miles to the north in Henry County.
