“T he Vegetarian Fest is one of my favorite Charlot-tesville tradi-tions,” declares

REALTOR® Amy Webb of Nest Realty. “This is just one more great event that rounds out our local calendar and makes Charlottesville such a wonder-ful place to live.” Webb explains that she was purely vegetarian for about a decade although she will now occa-sionally eat fish or meat. “I’m raising two vegetarian teens and keep a veg-etarian home,” she continues, “so I appreciate the opportunity each year to taste some great local vegetarian cuisine, learn about the work of local animal rescue groups and see new vegan and cruelty free products.”

A Brief HistoryThe “founding father” of the Festival was former Charlottesville mayor Dave Norris, a vegetarian for 20 years. “I’d heard about a festival up in Boston,” he recalls. “It was the first annual vegetar-ian festival in the country and I thought it would be interesting to see if we could get one off the ground.” As the then-director of Voices for Animals (VFA), he brought up the idea at a meeting. “Their response was: Who would come? But we decided to give it a try.”

So a Festival was held on the Down-town Mall in 1997. “It was a big suc-cess,” he says, still with both surprise and satisfaction. “We had about 20 ven-dors and about 1000 people showed up. So we did it again. And again.” The Festival, now in its seventeenth year, moved to Lee Park and now there are more than 100 vendors and 5000-6000 people attending what has become a Charlottesville tradition.

“It’s been great to see how the com-munity has come out and supported the Festival,” Norris says. “It’s a labor of love with thousands of hours invested by all the volunteers.” He firmly be-lieves a big part of the Festival’s success is its atmosphere. “From day one, we always approached the event in a very positive spirit. It’s not about lecturing or preaching, but about presenting vegetarianism in a very positive light. We offer varieties of food to sample, recipes, cookbooks, cooking demos. It really seems to resonate with people.”

Norris observes that Charlottesville is becoming a very friendly vegetarian place. “It’s a very progressive city with people involved with healthy living and healthy eating,” he says. “The Festival has evolved over the years to be about more than just food. It’s about

Speakers Schedule at the Central Library

12 noon – 12:50 p.m. Vasantha Reddi, PhD., MHES, works at UVa as a Clinical Research Coordinator and operates a school on Spirituality through Hindu religion for children. Her philosophy in life is: Paths are Many, but the goal is one, and all religions lead to one goal, the Ultimate reality.

Subject: Vegetarianism and spirituality

1:00 p.m. - 1:50 p.m. Robyn Coale, R.D. and Martin Katz, M.D. of Revolution Health Center in Scottsville. The Revolution Health Center is aimed at restoring foundational health through lifestyle and nutrition intervention, stress reduction, and education. Coale has a special interest in disease prevention and health promotion through whole-food, plant-based nutrition. Katz works as a free-clinic volunteer, medical missionary, and preventive medicine activist.

Subject: The Health Benefits of an Alkaline Diet

2:00 p.m. - 2:50 p.m. Heather Wetzel, Masters, Ed, Certified Community Herbalist. Wetzel has a talent for listening to both plants and people, and a passion for creating synergistic matches between the two. She teaches Roanoke and Virginia Beach and locally at Piedmont Virginia Community College and The University of Virginia.

Subject: Plant medicines: an important part of sustainable living

3:00 p.m. - 3:50 p.m. Barbara Stitt, PhD, Former Chief Probation Officer in Ohio. Her work in correcting behavior by correcting the diet and body chemistry with an 87 percent success rate resulted in a front-page article in the Wall Street Journal. She has been a guest on many national TV shows.

Subject: Impact of fresh, healthy foods on learning and behavior

Cooking Demonstrations will be held at The Haven

11:00 - 11:45 Martha Hester Stafford Secrets of a Great Stir-Fry

12 - 12:45 Mahabuba Akter Bangladeshi Cuisine includes potato curry - Alur dom , fried eggplant - begun Bhaji, and rice with ghee.

1:00 - 1:45 Sarah Lanzman Using the local bounty of the season, two dishes showcasing fresh chard, spaghetti squash, tomatoes, kale, figs and fresh herbs will be taught.

2:00 - 2:45 Patricia Leavitt Salad dressings, including: classic mustard vinaigrette; fresh green dressings with citrus zest, and those using whole fruits and vegetables. Make dressings easily using a handheld blender, plus how to mix up a dressing without measuring.

She says that for the first year of the Festival, everyone thought it might be a one-time event. “The idea was to have a celebration of a humane and healthy lifestyle and VFA was the originating organization for 15 years. Even back then and certainly now, studies show across the board that a vegan diet is very healthy.” Roberts has been a vegan since the mid-1980s, which means she doesn’t eat animals, fish, birds, or dairy products.

“I became involved because I be-lieve in the mission of reducing the suffering of animals on the planet. I’m involved for the humane aspect.” Still, Roberts says, although the Festival is about educating the public and pre-senting information, it’s a celebration, not a workshop.”

Jim Ward, publisher/editor of The Echo, a monthly publication in Char-lottesville, is the Festival Food Vendor Coordinator in charge of food vendors and taking applications. “Last year we heard that there was volunteer burn-out and Festival was going to be terminated,” Ward says. This was sad news for him. “It’s a lovely event, whether you’re veg-etarian or not—my favorite festival of the year—so I put a notice in The Echo and found others who were interested.”

The Festival TodayThose “others who were interested”

are Partners Dave Redding and Joanie Freeman—the people behind Char-lottesville’s non-profit Healthy Food Coalition. They took the Festival reins last year.

“We had traveled around the world working on environmental issues for six or seven years in many differ-ent places,” Redding says. “We know we’re overusing this planet and we want to teach people how to live sustainably.”

After exploring several East Coast locales, they settled in Charlottesville in 2010. “It’s beautiful here,” Redding says. “We live in town and I walk or bike everywhere and don’t get in my car for maybe two or three weeks. It’s all part of living sustainably.”

Another factor attracting them to Charlottesville was the number of non-profits concerned with the en-vironment, healthy living, and taking care of the planet. For instance, VFM coordinates a range of pet-related activities during the year such as the sterilization of feral cats and pet-food drives for the needy.

Another example is Transition Charlottesville-Albemarle (TCA). “They are very aligned with our thought process that we are going to have to go local,” Redding says. “They have meetings and classes on

everything from how to fix your own bike to canning your own food. We’re going to have to do things the way we used to do them.”

Indeed, TCA seeks to build a more resilient community in Charlottesville and Albemarle County by connecting neighbors, re-learning forgotten skills, and re-localizing systems of food, en-ergy, goods, communication, and culture.

A third example is the Vinegar Hill Canning Co-op, developed with coach-ing from Redding and Freeman. Using produce that is unsold at the close of the City Market, some dedicated women turn the leftovers into tasty canned goods to sell at the Market. Not only does this win-win project give local people a chance to learn marketable skills and develop a sustainable business model, it opens

up a market for previously unsalable produce. (Visit the Co-op in the non-profit section of City Market.)

Activities at the FestivalThere are always a number of food vendors and a variety of entertainment from a chain saw juggler to Morris Dancers and a Native American flute performer. Demonstration cooking classes are held kitty corner across Market Street at The Haven—a total of four—every hour from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Demos range from stir-fry to salad dressings.

The Central Library will be the site of a variety of speakers every hour from noon to 3:00 p.m. on topics such as the impact of healthy food on behav-ior presented by a former probation officer who has testified before the

a healthy lifestyle. Yoga, meditation, the environment, parenting, you name it—it’s a healthy living fair and a great family-friendly event with music and activities. It’s one of those things that brings Charlottesville together in a very positive way.”

Norris was at the helm for three years, and then Marianne Roberts took over as coordinator for five years. These days, she notes, she doesn’t give orders. “I just take orders,” she says. “It’s my seventeenth year working in the food vendor section.” She explains that she’s onsite for the day, helping food vendors comply with the many strict food-safety regulations because the Health Depart-ment visits every single booth. “That’s good,” she points out, “because people know all the food is safe to eat.”

Mark Your Calendar“The Vegetarian Festival will always hold a special place in my heart,” says REAL-TOR® Webb. “It was there that I made an impulsive decision one year to be-come a dog owner for the first time and I am now a through-and-through dog-lover.” She adopted “a great pooch” she named “Mr. Bingley” through Animal Connections, a Fluvanna rescue group.

”To put on an event on this scale devoted to vegetarianism is quite an undertaking by many people commit-ted to healthy living. It highlights how engaged, motivated and giving so many folks in the community are,” Webb con-cludes. “Charlottesville has a very edu-cated and ecology-oriented population, a large and vibrant food and locavore scene, and many people committed to healthy living and they all come together at the Vegetarian Festival.”

Marilyn Pribus lives in Albemarle Coun-ty and has followed a mostly vegan diet for more than 15 years. By her definition, all birthday cakes are vegan.

By Joanne DiMaggio

If you’re a frugal gardener, you know that autumn—with its moderate temperatures and increasing rain-fall—is the best time of year to plant or transplant trees, shrubs, and many other perennial plants. The warm soil promotes good root growth, and—unlike in the spring—young plants don’t face the potential of a long, hot, dry summer. Perennials planted in the fall can get established before going dormant for the winter.

Best of all, you’ll save a bundle on perennial gar-den stock, as many nurseries dramatically discount their remaining container-grown plants and other nursery stock. They don’t want to maintain them over the winter, especially with incoming pumpkins and Christmas trees, so it’s a great time to ask for an additional reduction on already discounted stock.

Lawns and sodThinking of re-sodding your yard? Fall is the least expensive time to do it. The grass in your yard is probably a perennial variety, so fall is the perfect time to seed or reseed lawns and even install new sod. Although most people think about having a lush lawn in the spring and summer, you can negotiate a lower rate on sod installation in the fall. If it’s time to sign or renew a contract for lawn care, you’ll get a better deal in the fall when lawn companies are hurting for business than if you wait until spring.

Equipment SalesAutumn is also when you’ll find the best deals on gardening tools and equipment. Now’s the time to hunt for used lawn mowers, weed trimmers, and other lawn and garden equipment, since many

people get rid of their used equipment at thrift stores, flea markets and yard sales at the end of the season. If you need a lawn or garden tractor, call area landscaping companies to see if they plan on selling off any of their used equipment now that their busy season is over.

Put Away and Tune-Up It pays to take care of the equipment you own and fall is the perfect time to give them some tender loving care before you store them for the winter. Remove dirt and rust from shovels, hoes, and other metal gardening tools. Oil all metal surfaces—used motor oil works fine for that—and put the working ends of your gardening tools in a plastic bag along with a couple of pieces of leftover summer charcoal to keep them from rusting.

Lawnmowers and other gas-powered garden equip-ment also should be thoroughly cleaned. Air and fuel filters should be changed (along with the oil). The gas tank should be kept filled with gasoline treated with a stabilizer. This will keep the gas fresh and prevents condensation and deposits from develop-ing in the engine.

Build a compost pile and mulchIf you don’t already have one, now is a good time to start a compost pile. Building one can be as simple as staking up mesh fencing like chicken wire—some-thing that allows air circulation from the sides and is deep enough for leaves and other organic matter to compress itself.

Be on the lookout after Halloween and Thanks-giving for leftover bales of straw that might be dis-counted or thrown to the curb after they’re no longer needed for decorating. Straw makes great mulch

or can be added to the compost pile. If you start a compost pile now, you’ll save by having a ready supply of rich, free compost to apply to your garden beds next spring rather than buying expensive garden soil and fertilizers at the nursery.

Mulch is often marked down in the fall. Apply-ing a blanket of mulch (wood chips, compost or other suitable organic matter) to flower beds and around trees and shrubs in the fall can help them retain moisture. Check with local landscaping and tree removal services for some of the best prices of the year on mulch.

Divide and multiplyFall is the ideal time to plant most springtime flower-ing bulbs (e.g. tulips, daffodils, crocuses, irises, etc.) as well as trees and shrubs. But why buy when you can propagate? Dividing most perennials—once they’re sufficiently mature—will make them healthier and create multiple plants out of a single one. Be sure to research which types of perennials should be di-vided in the fall and the best methods for doing so.

Outdoor building projectsDidn’t get in that new deck, patio or landscape makeover over the summer? Home improvement centers have very competitive fall prices on things like pressure-treated lumber, outdoor paving sup-plies and landscaping materials. When it comes to hiring a contractor for outdoor projects, it’s a buyer’s market in the fall compared with the spring and summer when contractors have more work than they can handle.

With a little extra effort this fall, you can have a greener yard—and a green wallet—come next spring. ■

NEWS & VIEWS

James Dickerson Honored with Good Neighbor Award

CAAR, (Charlottesville Area Associa-tion of REALTORS®, the voice of real estate in the Central Virginia region, has announced James Dickerson as a Good Neighbor Award recipient. This recognition program highlights local REALTORS® who dedicate significant time and interest to projects that make a lasting impact on our communities.

“We are thrilled to recognize James’ leadership and commitment to these wonderful community organizations. His volunteer work is something that our membership looks to as a model for their own service projects,” Denise Ramey, GRI, CAAR president and di-rector of relocation at Roy Wheeler Realty, said.

Dickerson has dedicated some 425 hours to volunteering for both Zion

United Methodist Church and Widows Son’s Masonic Lodge over the past 12 months. A Zion UMC member since 1991, he currently serves as worship leader once a month, regularly volun-teers as a lay minister to visit the ill, shut-ins and elderly who are unable to attend weekly worship as well as serves as chair of the administrative council. Dickerson was an integral part of establishing a preschool, and youth and family programs in its new Family Life Center

“Jim does a tremendous job for our church and is so well-liked by our com-munity who come to worship,” David Lagerveld, pastor of Zion United Methodist Church, said. “He has served many roles throughout the years and puts his whole heart into helping the church.”

Dickerson’s prior leadership of the Widows Son’s Masonic Lodge makes

him well-suited as the current district educational officer for the 18th Masonic District, training other members for leadership roles around the state. In addition to visiting the lodges in the district and making recommendations to the Grand Lodge, he manages three rental spaces owned by the Masonic Corporation. Above the time commit-ment, Dickerson has contributed sig-nificant personal funds to these causes.

An active member of CAAR since 1992, Dickerson participates on the Public Affairs Master Group as well as regular association meetings. A $100 donation was made to Zion United Methodist Church in Dick-erson’s name.

There will be balloon-animal art for the kids from Freckles n Friends. Also on hand will be Slice Pizza, Pepsi Products, great give-aways and lots eco-themed education and fun. All-In-One-Can Recyclers, Dixon Disposal; Eco-Friendly Pest Treaters, Intrastate Pest Control; and long-time green-thum-bers, Snow’s Garden Center have joined forces to bring eco-enlighten-ment to Charlottesville. “Recycling isn’t the only thing we can do to pro-tect our future Earth,” said Mike Dixon. “It’s very important that we reduce our waste and reuse items as often as possible.” Corbin Snow, from the 4th generation of Snow’s who have operated their local Garden Center and Landscaping Service for more than 100 years stated, “Protect-ing the Earth for future generations is essential. Easier ways exist; we just need to be educated.”
