    Prof. Dr. Irfan Hyder

    Dean

    College of Business Management

    Karachi

    Dear Sir,

We are pleased to submit this long report on our project Promotion of

Experiential Learning at Institute of Business Management which was done

under the supervision of our course in-charge, Mr Wajdan raza, Senior Lecture,

    Communication Department, IoBM.

The main objective of the project was to promote the concepts of Experiential

Learning among the students and faculty members of IoBM. Experiential

Learning ("EL") which means learning by doing or learning through experience isnow being practiced in many schools, colleges and universities throughout the

world to enhance the traditional classroom teaching with interactive applications

    of theory and practice.

The Institute of Business Management ("IoBM") has also started a campaign on

EL so that it can be included as a subject in its curriculum. Our projects was a

part of this campaign which was completed by using the business

communication principles i.e. verbal and non- verbal communications. We used

several communication channels including website through facebook, banners, brochures, brief lectures in class room, persuasive letters, emails, direct verbal

communication with students and senior faculty to promote the concepts of EL.

This project itself was an experiential learning for all of us where we learned

team management, communication skills, writing skills, development of ideas

through brain storming and discussion. We also learned how to deal with

different kinds of people, face the challenges and failures and most importantly

it was an educational experience for all of us because we came to know theconcept of EL which was not known to us before.

This report highlights the basic concepts of EL, the methodology we used to

promote it, analysis of the benefits and outcomes of the project and our

experiences during the whole activity of promotion of EL. The campaign went

very well with a very good response from the students and teaching faculty. Over

140 faculty members and 1300 students were approached while over 2000

brochures were distributed. Around 162 students posted more than 500

comments, 18 videos were downloaded, 211 pictures were uploaded.

At the end we would like to thank you Sir for your time, suggestions and valuable

comments. We want to express our sincerest gratitude to our course in-charge

for all his efforts he has taken during this campaign. We are also grateful to our

Rector and other respected faculty members. Thanks to our whole class as

without their support we could not complete this project. We would like to

thank all the students and employees of IoBM for their support and also our

    Executive Summary

Experiential learning means learning by doing or learning from experiences. There are several approaches such as experiential education activities,

presentations, internships, seminars that can help the students to evaluate their

experiential learning potential. It allows students to contact with the

environment, and gives exposure to processes that are extremely unpredictable

and uncertain. Keeping in view the above importance of experiential learning,

IoBM organized an experiential education campaign to provide students and

faculty members a valuable learning experience for their professional growthand development.

A group of eight Business Communication students belonging to different professions

was selected on the basis of experiences in their relevant fields to promote experiential

learning at IoBM among the students and teaching faculty. Under the guidance of

course in-charge the group used various business communication skills in terms of

verbal and non verbal communication. Students created Facebook page to share their

concepts about EL, made banners, posters and brochure to create awareness. On final

day games were organized to test the knowledge of students about EL.

The campaign went very well with a very good response from the students and teaching

faculty. Over 140 faculty members and 1300 students were approached while over 2000

brochures were distributed. Around 162 students posted more than 500 comments, 18

videos were downloaded, 211 pictures were uploaded. The senior faculty members

including Dean and Rector of IoBM highly appreciated the efforts of first year students.

Students also learnt about EL through this promotional campaign.

The students and teachers took keen interest in EL campaign which clearly shows thatthey are keen to introduce the concept of EL in their traditional way of learning. Such

campaign should be continued on regular basis and EL should be included as the

    management course.

    Introduction

    Experiential Learning

Experiential learning (EL) means learning by doing, through our actions and

experiences. It is also learned by discovery or exploring something on our own. It

is a purposeful process of engaged and active learning to constructs knowledge,

skills, or values by means of direct experiences in authentic, real world contexts

    (Association for Experiential Education, 2007)

Learning through experience is not a new concept for the classroom learning.

Notable educational psychologists such as John Dewey, Carl Rogers and David

Kolb have provided the groundwork of learning theories that focus in learning

by doing. Dewey popularized the concept of experiential education which

focuses on problem solving and critical thinking rather than memorization and

rote learning. Rogers considered experiential learning significant as compared

to what he called meaningless cognitive learning (Experiential Learning).

    2

There are various saying on experiential learning which are helpful to understand

why EL is an effective process of learning.

I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand

    Confucius, 450 BC

Tell me and I Forget, Teach me and I remember, Involve me and I will

    learn Benjamin Franklin, 1750

There is an intimate and necessary relation between the process of

actual experience and education John Dewey, 1938

    Kolb Experiential Learning Theory (ELT)

In the experiential model, Kolb described two different ways of grasping

experience: Concrete Experience and Abstract Conceptualization. He also

identified two ways of transforming experience: Reflective Observation and

Active Experimentation. These four modes of learning are often portrayed as a

cycle of learning in his ELT [Figure 1] (Kolb, 1984).

Concrete Experience: the tangible qualities of the immediate experience

    and the grasping of knowledge

Reflective Observing: a collection of data through observation and

    critical thought regarding these experiences

  • 8/21/2019 Real life communication challenge

    3

    Figure 1: Kolb Experiential Theory

    9/83

    4

Abstract Conceptualizing: the process of analyzing the data received and

an internal process of developing concepts and theory from the

    experience

Active Experimenting: a modification of behavior and knowledge occurs,

while the implication of future actions is considered.

According to Kolb, in the process of EL cycle the learner 'touches all the bases',

i.e. experiencing, reflecting, thinking, and acting. Consider an example of riding a

bike. The first time when a learner tries to ride a bike it goes unbalanced and the

learner may fall but the learner gets the concrete experience by feeling the

experience. It forms the basis for the next step of the cycle observation or

reflection where the learner considers what is working or failing, then he thinks

how to improve and makes several attempts which is called abstract

conceptualization. Every new attempt to ride is inform by a cyclical pattern of

previous experience, thought and reflection which is known as active

    experimentation (Kolb, 1984).

Immediate or concrete experiences lead to observations and reflections. These

reflections are then assimilated (absorbed and translated) into abstract concepts

with implications for action, which the person can actively test and experiment

with, which in turn enable the creation of new experiences.

    5

Kolb's learning styles can be seen in terms of a two-by-two matrix (Figure 1).

Diverging (feeling and watching - CE/RO)These type of learners prefer

to feel and watch the things from different perspective rather than doing.

These types of people generate ideas, do brainstorming, like to gather

information and tend to be imaginative and emotional. They prefer to

work in groups and listen with an open mind and welcome the feedback.

Assimilating (watching and thinking - AC/RO)They are called the

thinkers with a concise and logical approach. People with an Assimilating

learning style are less focused on people and more interested in ideas

and abstract concepts. They prefer readings, exploring the new ideas,

analyze the models, and having time to think things through.

Converging (doing and thinking - AC/AE)In converging learning style,

people use their learning to find solutions to practical issues. They prefer

technical tasks, and are less concerned with people and interpersonal

aspects. They prefer to do experiment with new ideas and theories.

Accommodating (doing and feeling - CE/AE)They rely on 'hands-on'

experiment and also use other's analysis to take a practical, experiential

approach rather than carry out their own analysis. This learning style is

prevalent and useful in roles requiring action and initiative. They prefer

to work in teams and set targets to achieve an objective (Kolb, 1984).

    Haynes Experiential Learning Process

According to Haynes, experiential learning involves a number of steps that offer

student a hands-on, collaborative and reflective learning experience which helps

them to fully learn new skills and knowledge (Haynes, 2007). Although learning

content is important, learning from the process is at the heart of experiential

    learning.

    Experiencing/Exploring Doing : Students perform or do a hands-on

experience with little or no help from the instructor. Examples might

include: Making products or models, role-playing, giving a presentation,

problem-solving, playing a game. A key facet of experiential learning is

what the student learns from the experience rather than the quantity or

    quality of the experience.

Sharing/Reflecting What Happened? : Students share the results,

reactions and observations with their peers. Students also get other

peers to talk about their own experience, share their reactions and

observations and discuss feelings generated by the experience.

Processing/Analyzing Whats Important?: Students discuss, analyze

and reflect upon the experience which allow to relate them to future

learning experiences. Students also discuss how the experience was

  • 8/21/2019 Real life communication challenge

    12/83

    7

carried out, how themes, problems and issues emerged as a result of the

    experience.

Generalizing So What?: Students connect the experience with real

world examples, find trends or common truths in the experience, and

identify real life principles that emerged.

Application Now What?: Students apply what they learned in the

experience to a similar or different situation and discuss how the newly

learned process can be applied. They also discuss how issues raised can

be useful in future situations and how more effective behaviors can

    develop from what they learned.

Experiential Learning in the World Class Business Schools

Experiential Learning is now being practiced in many schools, colleges and

universities throughout the world to enhance the traditional classroom teaching

with interactive applications of theory and practice. Experiential Learning in

business and accounting programmes has become more important. It is included

as MBA course in University of Ottawa and School of Management Kellogg.

Brandeis University and University of Berkeley offer students and faculty a wide

range of hands-on learning and teaching opportunities in the form of EL course.

Several other unviversities like University of Washingron, University of Memphis,

  • 8/21/2019 Real life communication challenge

    13/83

    8

Belmont University, University of Toronto have also included EL in their MBA

programmes where students learn through field courses, internships, practicum

placements, research with professors and community supervisors and service

    learning programmes.

    Experiential Learning at IoBM

Experiential learning goes beyond the conventional comfort zone of university

course activities such as reading texts, preparing assignments, writing papers,

etc. The management of IoBM initiated an experiential education campaign to

include EL as a subject in its management course to employ constructive changes

    in higher education of Pakistan.

As part of business communication course, an initial activity in the form of

experiential learning campaign was conducted by a group of the students of

Business Communication under the supervision of the course sin-charge. This

activity of IoBM students thought to be helpful in getting feedback from the

students about the implantation of EL as a subject in IoBM.

Since a great extent of this project was focused on the implementation of

experiential learning at IoBM, there were many approaches but it was defined

most simply as learning by doing.

  • 8/21/2019 Real life communication challenge

    14/83

    9

This approach provided the students a platform for learning, to increase their

knowledge, add and develop workplace skills, to have professional interactions,

develop the ability to take risks which in turn will foster confidence in them to

participate and communicate effectively and efficiently with the creative and

    business world.

The EL project also encouraged the students to build on the theoretical

knowledge which in future will eventually reflect in them when they take on

    challenges in the professional world.

    Objectives

The purpose of the project Promoting Experiential Learning at Institute of

    Business Management was

To introduce basic concepts of Experiential Learning to the students of

    IoBM.

To motivate students to change their learning behaviors with the help of

informative sessions, awareness workshops, audio-visual and activity

    based learning.

To change the learning dimensions and to eradicate the conventional

methods of teaching as well as learning.

To encourage the students to engage and apply academic understandings

through hands-on experience, while simultaneously learning new

information about the world around them.

To give confidence to the students through this practical approach of

learning in their own abilities, discover innovative ways to overcome

obstacles and turn a class project into a life experience.

The main emphasis of the project apart from EL promotion was the use of

business communication (the main subject) in all aspects of organizing

    this project.

    Planning and Execution

A group of eight students of Business Communication was formed by the Course

In-charge Mr Wajdan Raza (WR), Senior Lecturer, Communication Department

IoBM. The group was consists of Anas Godil (AG), Ali Raza (AR), Amna Shahid

(AS), Javeria Ikram (JI), Mahak Kazi (MK), Muhammad Furqan MF), Sakina Yousuf

(SY) and Syed Shah Faisal Imam (SF). The group was selected on the basis of their

personality, educational background, profession and experiences in their

workplace. The group was named Movers and Shakers by the course in-charge

Mr Raza and the task was given on promotion of experiential leaning at IoBM.

The target population was the students and the teaching faculty.

Several meeting were held with the course in-charge and among the group

members. Following methods were finalized to promote EL among the students

    of IoBM.

As a first step Facebook page (Figure 2) was created on 10th

    June 2013 so

that the group members can correspond to each other and make

    planning.

An introduction of each team member was prepared so that all members

    know each other

The group used the social media platform for brainstorming and

exchanging the ideas with each other

A project proposal was prepared with the help of course in-charge of

Business Communication with all required details including the expenses

    incurred during this project.

Letters were drafted to get the approval of the Dean, Rector and other

    managing faculty.

After few meetings with the managing faculty the final draft was

approved and the funding was provided by the IoBM itself.

The project was started on 7th

July 2013 with the awareness campaign on

the Facebook and the whole class of Business communication was invited

to participate in this campaign through Facebook. Later the Facebook

was made public for all students and faculty members of IoBM to share

    their understanding about EL.

After several brainstorming sessions, the designing and the matter for the

main banner was finalized and the banners were displayed in the IoBM.

Emails were sent to all department heads requesting them to allow the

group to present a PowerPoint slide presentation in the classroom either

before the start of the lecture or at the end. Presentation through

    multimedia was not allowed.

    14

A 5-minute verbal lecture was presented in the class by different

members of EL team to make aware students and the teaching faculty

    about EL and its benefits.

A brochure on Experiential Learning was made for distribution among the

students and teaching faculty of IoBM.

The course in-charge involved the whole class by an activity of making

posters on different aspects of Experiential Learning. The class was

divided into six groups and each group makes a poster by using the AIDA

    technique.

Throughout the promotion the group was asked to induct the business

communication like verbal and non verbal communication skills.

Although it was decided to propagate the campaign by attracting the

students through games, music and snacks on stalls in the activity and

cafeteria but due to Ramzan the idea was cancelled.

The final show was done on 17th

August 2013 in the cafeteria which was

attended by the students and the teachers. Through game shows the

knowledge of the students on EL was tested.

    Data Presentation and Analysis

    Diversity of the team members

This was the first semester of each member. New place new people. The

members knew little about each other even only the names of few. In the realms

of ideas they came to explore and the experiences they came to share, it was

    learning through experience.

A group of eight students was selected by the course in-charge to initiate the

project on the basis of their profession and workplace knowledge. A teacher

knows his students the best; to look for that one thing, that one strength to be

pillar of a team. To form a team of people with visions similar enough to pursue

a goal and ideas diverse enough to bring to life a project of this huge scale.

Among the group members there were four males and four females while four

were pharmacist by qualification, two were doctors, one statistician and one

medical technologist. Three members belonged to pharma industry, one to

publication, two were employed in hospital, one member was graphic designer

while one was completing house job.

The main leader of the group was a blend of social responsibility and corporate

leadership and led the team very well. Few students had good knowledge of

research while few had experiences of organizing events. Some members were

  • 8/21/2019 Real life communication challenge

    21/83

    16

confident, self-motivated and had very good communication skills which helped

a great in contacting with the faculty members and students. Majority of the

students were creative, ready to take risks and keen at learning and experiencing

new things and had sense of responsibility and commitment.

    Job assignment to group members

MK developed a Facebook page (Figure 2) for the team to connect on social

media and also wrote an introduction about each member including their

strengths. AS shared the understanding on the basic concepts of EL,

brainstormed for setting the goals of the project and proposal creation. Working

on all aspects of the project as an all-rounder AS and AG along with JI and MK

finalized the project proposal. AS, JI and others actively shared literature about

EL on Facebook. Initially a detailed discussion on different theories on EL like

Kolbs theory, Haynes theory was developed through FB and their models were

presented with examples. JI actively shared information on FB page, presented

her ideas, actively shared information on FB page and upload various articles on

FB. MF and AR contributed quotations and thoughts about the concept of EL.

The entire group shared ideas for the banner design and brochure content which

was given final touches by AG and then creatively expressed and beautifully

designed onto the banner and brochures by SF (Figure 3, Figure 4). AR conducted

  • 8/21/2019 Real life communication challenge

    22/83

    17

the final game and coordinated with participants while MF was responsible for

budgeting and financial functions. Entering the final phases, aiming to achieve

the main purpose of the project, i.e. to highlight and create an awareness of the

concept of experiential learning, AG, AS and MK prepared a 5-minute lecture to

deliver in various classes at IoBM to reach the students directly and invite them

to understand and embrace the concept of EL (Figure 5).

SY made the final report of EL project. AG took the lead taking the team through

highs and the lows, planning and coordinating the activities as well as

    communicating with the faculty members.

Role of the Course In-Charge and Managing Faculty in EL Promotion

We highly appreciate the support of our course in-charge who guided the group

at each step of the promotion and never hesitated in giving his remarks and

    suggestions to improve the project.

The Dean, Dr. Irfan Hyder has been very generous to allow the group to meet

him in person and all group members improved under his supervision, as he took

keen interest in the project and guided through with the presentations and

facilitated in coordinating with other senior faculty members. He also wrote a

    testimonial for the project.

The project took on a whole new level when the rector, Mr Talib Karim got on

board. The support and encouragement received from him was remarkable. He

also wrote a testimonial for the brochure was very prompt in releasing the

    budget for the project.

Other faculty members were also very responsive and enthusiastically joined the

journey of EL and enlightened the students on understanding the core concepts

of EL through Facebook page as well as by facilitating the group members in

giving class presentations and writing great testimonials.

Involvement of the students of IoBM in EL Promotion

The entire class of business communication joined in to take active part and

contributed creatively by designing posters to promote EL at IoBM. A total of 6

posters were made on different aspects of EL and were displayed in different

areas of IoBM (Figures 6-11). Apart from the Business Communication class,

many students and faculty members participated on FB and shared their ideas.

The participants posted hundreds of comments, quotations, articles, PowerPoint

presentations, pictures related to EL, quotations on experiential learning, games

    and videos.

On last day students participated in game show. There were four teams of

students who answered 10 questions each. Every team got prizes. The event

went superb, executed excellently well (Figure 12).

    Reach of Experiential Learning Campaign

The main objective of this project was the promotion of EL and its success can be

measured by the reach of this project. Over 140 faculty members and 1300

students were approached through brief lectures during classes, Facebook or

directly while over 2000 brochures were distributed. Around 162 participants

joined the FB which included faculty members and students of IoBM. Over 1500

posts were uploaded on Facebook by students and faculty members which

included quotations, articles, presentations, poems, interesting and informative

readings on EL. Over 200 pictures on EL and various interesting videos on how

experiential learning is used in different fields especially in educational

organizations were also uploaded. The faculty members have been very kind to

encourage the efforts of group and never hesitate in giving their suggestions and

    advice.

Learning Outcome for the Team members

This project was meaningful for the entire team in terms of learning, project

management and most importantly how to work as a team. Every individual was

utilized for his/her own unique potential, creativity and critical thinking to bring

out the best in each member to achieve the goal successfully. They came to

know their strengths, qualities, and weak points as well. It also helped us

grooming our professional, intellectual and leadership skills by facilitating critical

thinking and understanding on planning, organizing and leading. This project was

a challenge for the entire team and was itself an experience of experiential

    learning.

Connection to learning outcomes within a thematic area of business

    communication

This project helped the entire team in understanding the dynamics of successful

business communication, both in the form of verbal and non-verbal by means of

projects, activities and weekly tasks. The group members learnt how to develop

communication skills by actively participating in group discussions and answering

the queries related to EL. They also learnt persuasive writing, letter writing

especially to higher authorities, email communications, poster presentation. The

members were benefited with nonverbal communication in the form of banners,

    33

brochures, PowerPoint presentation, by communicating senior management and

even they learnt how to manage when they came across to deal with some

seniors members who were not happy initially with the proceedings of this

    promotion activity.

Level of sustainability of the experiential learning

Academically this project has given an insight to EL which can be taken into our

professional lives and excel in our fields. As soon as the students get acquainted

with the idea of EL, they will start relating their concrete understanding and

reflective observation to take part in active experimentation. Considering the

worth of EL, it will develop the targeted population to become socially and

emotionally efficient in terms of self-improvisation and growth. In order to make

our plan successful we will ensure that the target population should implement

the learning outcome in their real life scenarios. This will be possible by

maintaining check and balance by regular execution and review of the

    importance of EL.

    Reflection

The whole process of learning through experience gave the group members a

practical insight to improve and implement our skills of planning, organizing and

leading the task at hand and enhance the teamwork skills. They started off by

  • 8/21/2019 Real life communication challenge

    39/83

    34

brainstorming the organizations to carry out our project in but due to limited

accessibility, they learnt to face rejections. They also learnt how to work as a

team and take along the members from different backgrounds to bring out the

best in them to achieve a common goal. This venture helped to strengthen the

communication skills by carrying out discussions and actively participating in

project proceedings. Furthermore, the project has very important long term

implications, because whatever the group of movers and shakers learn from

this experience will be implemented at their workplaces and used to avoid

repeating the past mistakes. The project will also help to improve their approach

towards problem identification and come up with possible solutions and give

their confidence a great boost and empower them to reach out to people to

    make their point.

    Challenges

Two months passes by and the journey wasnt easy. We faced challenges in

terms of communication, lack of coordination between the groups and time

limitations due to the holy month of Ramadan. Before the final round, when we

were at the last stage of our campaign the rain stuck us and we missed the last

moment pace. Unfortunately the attendance of the students was also low due to

rain. Initially there was lack of participation, the members were unaware of the

  • 8/21/2019 Real life communication challenge

    40/83

    35

subject. Time management was a great challenge because all of the members

were doing job and it was difficult to take out some time when everyone was

made available. There were deadlines to be met and tasks to be accomplished.

But with a promising team under guidance of the supportive faculty members,

we succeeded in introducing EL at IoBM.

    Evaluation Criteria

In order to assess the effective outcomes, feedback can be taken from the

students, senior management and teachers of IoBM to determine any positive

effect of this project on their teaching methodologies and on learning behaviors

of the students. And, if found to have lasting positive impact we would like to

create a society for Experiential Learners so that it will continue to progress and

touch heights in changing learning strategies.

    Conclusions and Recommendations

    Conclusion

The basic aim of Experiential Learning is to empower individuals capacity

to learn and grow more professionally.

Experiential learning allows us to understand that to be remembered

over a long period of time.

It provides guidance for applications to helping people improve their

    learning in education and development.

It helps us to understand learning and flexibility at a deeper and yet more

    comprehensive level.

Experiential learning project helps to create awareness and provide

guidance of how they can improve and implement such learning

techniques in their professional lives to obtain a satisfactory outcome

    ensuring progress in their field.

It goes beyond knowledge and into skill by generating a learning

experience - the more experience the greater the skill.

Experiential learning teaches us that people learn best from their own

experiences and their own reviews (Arora).

    37

    Recommendations

Since this report presents evidence to suggest that both students and instructors

have a strong interest in experiential education, we would therefore like to make

the following recommendations/suggestions in order to foster the development

and implementation of experiential learning in response to the event that has

    been conducted at IoBM to promote Experiential Learning (Hoover, 1975;

Experiential Learning Report; Clark 2010) .

EL should be implicated practically as a part of curriculum and used as a

    learning methodology all over IoBM.

Teacher education programs, particularly in experiential education

should begin to include instructions on the entire process of experiential

learning not just the importance of hands on concrete experience.

Students should be encouraged to carry on experimenting on a small

scale, initially developing an experiential learning activity .We suggest

beginning small, and letting success build on success just like we did in

    the EL promotion campaign.

Use lectures for content and tutorials for the purpose of promoting EL

within the institution should be further widespread to a greater extent.

  • 8/21/2019 Real life communication challenge

    43/83

    38

Make the experiential opportunities that exist in IoBM more prominent

to the students and the broader community.

For experiential learning to become a high priority in the institution, a

reorientation of IoBMs priorities is needed. Additional investments of

both human and financial resources will be required in order to fully reap

the educational benefits of this approach.

High priority attention should be given to the program, the department,

the institute, to address the issues raised in this report. We suggest that

efforts should be directed first toward those faculties that could have an

instant positive impact on the development and quality of experiential

learning opportunities (ex., faculty motivation/development, faculty

    evaluation, evaluation of experiential learning).

Further research into how experiential learning can be associated with

other learning research will provide the profession a better

understanding of why experiential learning offers a sound opportunity to

improve student performances along with wealthier experiences which is

    essential for their professional development.

This project should be continued on regular basis for future batches of

students. We the movers and shakers of this project also can move this

project with other subjects as well like marketing in our next semester.

    1. Abstract

Provide a detailed overview of the project. Explain your goals, what you intend

to learn, and how you will spend your time. Why is this project personally

    meaningful?

    2. Connection to learning outcomes within a thematic area of business

    communication

How will your project help you achieve 2-3 specific learning outcomes within an

honors thematic area? Provide specific examples.

The purpose of the project is to introduce basic concepts of Experiential learning

to the students of IoBM. First step of this process is to motivate students to

change their learning behaviors with the help of informative sessions, awareness

workshops, audio-visual and activity based learning. If needed, motivational

speakers will be invited to enhance the overall impact. After the students are

well-versed with the concept of EL, it will be implicated practically as a part of

curriculum and used as a learning methodology all over IoBM. The ultimate goal

is to change the learning dimensions and to eradicate the conventional methods

of teaching as well as learning. IoBM is also committed to these constructive

changes in higher education of Pakistan. Finally, feedback from the students will

be taken and if found effective, we will spread the word out through social media

and let other people get to know about it.

This project is meaningful for the entire team in terms of learning, project

management and most importantly how to work as a team. Every individual will

be utilized for their own unique potential, creativity and critical thinking to bring

out the best in each member to achieve the goal successfully. Funding in the

amount of Rs 155,500 is requested for promotional materials and hospitality

suites. This project will be a challenge for all of us and is itself an experience ofexperiential learning.

It will help in understanding the dynamics of successful business communication

in the form of verbal and non-verbal by means of projects, activities & weekly

tasks. It will help us groom our professional, intellectual and leadership skills by

facilitating critical thinking and understanding on planning, organizing and

leading. The project will also help us develop communication skills by actively

participating in group discussions & answering the queries related to EL.

    3. Connection to goals and academic theories

How does this project contribute to your future academic, professional, and/or personal

goals? Name 2-3 specific theories, readings, concepts, or courses you will use to prepare or

gain background knowledge for your project. Explain how/why you chose your resources

and how they will inform your project. Provide citations, as appropriate.

    4. Initiative, independence and creativity

What is your unique contribution to this project? How is your involvement

unique as compared to any other participant? Highlight your teams strengths.

Academically this project will give us an insight to Experiential learning which we can

take into our professional lives and excel in our fields. Personally, it will help develop

our communication and leadership skills. Some of the theories that we relate to our

    goals and project experiences are:

Honey and Mumford Learning Styles Questionnaire: This questionnaire describes

    four learning approaches within which learners operate: activist, reflector;

pragmatist and theorist (see http://www.peterhoney.com/ for details).

Belbin Self-Perception Inventory: This questionnaire presents 9 roles anddescribes how each of them contributes to a team. Most people operate within

three to four team roles, and these can be adapted depending on the situation.

Tuck-man Teamwork Theory-Stages of Group Development: The group develops

from its formation and till it starts performing on the assigned tasks. It is a 4

stage process - forming, storming, norming and performing. http://www.the-

    happy-manager.com/articles/teamwork-theory/

Ali Raza: Conducting the final game and coordinator with participants.

Amna Shahid: Sharing of the understanding on the basic concepts of EL,

brainstorming for setting the goals of the project and proposal creation.

Anas Godil: Group Lead with planning, coordinating and getting the promo

material printed and setting up the suite.

Mahak Kazi: Creator of Facebook page and compilation of the introduction of

members, finalizing the content of brochures.

    5. Level of sustainability of the experiential learning

What are the expected outcomes (i.e positive changes) of the project for IoBM?

What is your plan for making that positive change sustainable in IoBM?

    6. Reflection

How will you actively reflect on your learning throughout and following the

    experience?

As soon as the students get acquainted with the idea of EL, they will start relating

their concrete understanding and reflective observation to take part in active

experimentation. Considering the worth of EL, it will develop the targeted

population to become socially and emotionally efficient in terms of self-

improvisation and growth. In order to make our plan successful we will ensure

that the target population should implement the learning outcome in their real

life scenarios. This will be possible by maintaining check and balance by regular

execution and review of the importance of EL.

The whole process of learning through experience gave us a practical insight to

improve and implement our skills of planning, organizing and leading the task athand and enhance our teamwork skills. We started off by brainstorming the

organizations to carry out our project in but due to limited accessibility, we learnt

carrying out discussions and actively participating in project proceedings.

Furthermore, the project has very important long term implications, because

whatever we will learn along this experience will be implemented at our

workplaces and used to avoid repeating the past mistakes. The project will alsohelp us improve our approach towards problem identification and come up with

possible solutions and give our confidence a great boost and empower us to

    DeanCollege of Business Management

    Korangi Creek, Karachi-75190,

    Pakistan

    Dear Dr Hyder,

RE: Promoting Experiential Learning at Institute of Business Administration

We, the students of MBA-MHM are pleased to present this proposal for your review.

Our group has been working on this project from last few weeks and now we are able tocommunicate the whole project with you. This project is about promoting Experiential

Learning with in IoBM. First of all, the main objective of this project is to introduce

Experiential Learning all over IoBM and persuade students to change their learning

practices through open day forums, awareness sessions and workshops.

The main focus of Project EL is to change learning methodology by making Experiential

Learning as a part of our curriculum. Later on, we would like to publicize the project

through social media and finally after the successful completion of the project we will

approach Higher Education Commission of Pakistan to anchor this transformation in

    learning all over the Country.

In order to assure effective execution of this project, our proposal requests PKR 155500

in funding so that promotional items and audio-visual aid can be arranged to carry out

    the promotional activities throughout IoBM.

We would highly appreciate that if higher authorities of IoBM take an interest to make

Experiential Learning as a new dimension of learning around IoBM and approve our

proposal for the execution of the project.

    Thank You,

    Team Project EL

Did you read the cover letter, you wrote!!!! Read the subject line again!

Where are you promoting experiential learning at IBA or IoBM?

First lesson in communication. Don't ever send out an important letter unless

you have proof read it. The only way to proof read an important letter in a "fool-proof" manner is to print it out!!!!.

See the importance of experiential learning!

    Dear Anas

I really appreciate your efforts and coordination for creating a platform for a real

    purpose-based communication (Experience 1: happiness).

The Dean is the real spirit behind this change through experiential learning (EL).

Down the track the whole team of EL will find him one the most motivating

leaders for the change inculcated in me by Dr Sb. You will observe him in me in

many interactions of mine with you in future (Experience 2: possibility of further

    experiences).

On Dr Sb's damage-control feedback, writing is permanent thus needs many eyesfor a finer editing (Experience 3: critical realism). I know mistakes are natural but

we may reduce them with our understanding of Business Communication

(Experience 4: there is always a room for improvement) .

Congratulations for being the torch bearers of Experiential Learning (EL) at IoBM.

EL is simple: put your Higher Order Thinking in place, analyse, synthesize, and

evaluate your experience and share it for healthy criticism. Implement EL and

Lecture based teaching and preparing for the exams makes us forget most that

we memorize. Experiential Learning (EL) links experience of real-life, reflection

and trial-and-error and makes learning fun, long term and life-long. Just think of

learning to swim or learning to drive. No amount of classroom lecturing by an

Olympic gold-medalist or a Formula-1 winner is of any help. You can't learn

unless you jump into the water or sit behind the wheel and press the

accelarator. Also known as "learning by doing", Experiential Learning enables

you to take charge of your learning and to boldly go where no one has gonebefore!

    balance amount.

Please allow for the release of a cheque as an advance payment so that the

Subject: Dissemination of Experiential Learning Initiative

    Dear Faculty:

We are in the process of implementing experiential learning which is a goal set

by higher management of IoBM. Students of Business Communication course

have been assigned with a project to disseminate information about"Experiential Learning" to the students of IoBM. In this process they would get

experiential learning of how strategy directions get communicated to

employees/stakeholders of a company. In this connection, the group would

require 5-10minutes of your class time to explain experiential learning to your

    students.

Looking forward to your cooperation and facilitation.

    Dr Irfan Hyder
