Real life skills. Real tasks. Real innovation.

Primary 1 to 6

A vibrant new Primary course which has real world communication at its core. Engaging characters and stories provide authentic contexts for communication and an integrated life skills syllabus helps foster critical and creative thinking.

“Heroes focuses on English as it is used in the real world. Pupils receive systematic support enabling them to complete fun, communicative tasks, set in real world contexts. My pupils have really enjoyed and benefited from these tasks.”

“By helping family, friends and members of the local community, every child can be a hero.”

“Teaching children to think critically and creatively is more important than ever. Heroes helps children to develop new ways of thinking so that they can explore and make sense of their world.”

“Heroes is about confidence-building. We have developed activities to help students to feel comfortable about challenging themselves and thinking about how they learn effectively. I think our devoted Study Skills and Thinking Skills sections will be valued by teachers and students alike.”

MEET THE AUTHORS:

• Engaging real-world content and tasks, tailored to the needs and maturity of your pupils, help them to progressively gain communicative competence.

• An emphasis on the development of life skills, presented in a child-friendly way which encourages pupils to reflect and apply the skills to their own lives.

• An integrated approach to the four skills (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking) ensures that pupils develop both receptive and productive skills in parallel, as in real life.

• Throughout the course, thinking skills activities are used to develop pupils’ ability to think critically and creatively.

• Heroes has a wide range of extension material which can be found at the back of the Pupil’s Book and Workbook. This provides teachers with the flexibility they need to adapt the level according to their classroom needs.

Innovative support material, such as the Communication Kit (levels 1 to 4), provides teachers with all the teaching tools and extension material they need to achieve the best results in their classes.

WHY HEROES?

3

EVOLVING WITH YOUR PUPILS

• The four characters, Heroes Connect, are a group that meet up and work on their intercultural blog and vlog project. They share information with their peers around the world, enhancing cultural awareness.

• Continued focus is given to integrated skills with emphasis given to Digital Competence.

• Thinking skills lessons help students to develop new ways of thinking in order to explore and make sense of this world.

• Grammar is presented in the Grammar Connect section where pupils are given the appropriate tools to work out grammatical patterns.

• At the end of each unit pupils watch a vlog which reinforces and extends the content of the unit, while also exposing pupils to new everyday English language.

• In the Heroes Club the four characters participate in different fun activities in their neighbourhood and learn about the world around them in an engaging, age-appropriate way.

• Integrated skills are developed through the use of motivating songs, stories and videos.

• The life skills activities use friendly comic strip characters, making them more accessible to this age group.

• The final review task has a video which can be used as a model by pupils to show what they have learnt in the unit.

• The Heroes Community Centre is where the characters like to spend their free time. They are now part of a wider community.

• Integrated skills continue to be developed through the use of songs, stories, raps and videos, with productive and receptive skills being worked on together.

• Life skills are broadened using stories in which pupils need to analyse the various possible outcomes.

• The Grammar Heroes present vocabulary and grammar within an appropriate and fun context.

• At the end of the unit, using their linguistic and communicative skills, pupils demonstrate what they have learnt.

My favourite film is called Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Percy is 16 years old and his dad is a Greek god. Percy’s best friends are Annabeth and Grover. Annabeth is hard-working and she’s good at solving problems. Grover is kind and he looks after Percy. The three friends have lots of adventures and they fight some terrible mythical beasts. It’s a great film. Georgia from Greece, age 11

My favourite film is called Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It’s about an 11-year-old boy called Greg. Greg’s best friend is Rowley. Rowley is smiley and he’s very friendly. Greg tries to be good, but sometimes he’s naughty and his parents are angry with him. I laugh a lot when I watch this film. Tom from Scotland, age 10

My favourite film is called Big Hero 6. It’s about a 14-year-old boy called Hiro. He’s very clever and he loves building robots. Hiro’s best friend is a robot called Baymax. Baymax is kind and he likes looking after people. He’s very funny, too. I always laugh when he plays football.
