on
1970’sThe era of disenchantment
with the system
REAL• War with Pakistan• Declaration of
Emergency• Virtual breakdown of
democratic institutions
• Sharpening of disparities
• Rise of a non ideological, self serving political class
REEL• Evolution of parallel
cinema (films by Girish Karnad, Shyam Benegal, Basu Chatterjee) – deviation from the standard song and dance sequences
• Focus was on existing problems of the people
• The rise of the angry young man – fighting the evils of the society
The films glorified violence. Justified villainy and believed that evil can be dispensed only with evil. Thus resounding the popular sentiment of the time.
1980’sThe era of absolute anarchy
REAL• Downfall of the
Congress Party• Emergence of
regional, communal and caste based formations
• Absence of stability aggravated the social and economic transactions
REEL• Fall of the angry
young man to more diverse options
• Films focussing on famines, peasant conditions etc got international acclaim
• Films like Arth Satya tried to bring order to the anarchy
• Films also started dealing with women’s empowerment
• Lot of songs and dances with voyeuristic display
This phase marked the shift India was attempting to make in political and economic spheres. The films were also of experimental and exploratory nature.
1990’s - PresentThe era of globalization
REAL• Opening of the Indian
economy to the world.• MNCs swarmed in to
get a chunk of the Indian pie.
• Social life came under a threat as a result of marketization
• Displacement of indigenous industries under the onslaught of the MNCs
REEL• Films gave assurance
and security• Hum aapke hain kaun
gave illusion of happy joint families
• Films like DDLJ, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai gave tradition and custom like obedience to the patriarchal law, respect for elders and celebration of love, friendship and need to internalize conflicts
The country was no longer the old traditional India. It was reborn. The movies tried to link this new India with the traditional India.
Reel influence on Real• Fashion - Daily soaps, cinema eg. Mohra
bandana, Tere Naam hair cut etc• Business - Tourism, promotion of locales, movie
merchandize, ideas like Disney World etc• Awareness - Knowledge Documentaries by
Discovery, programs like Man VS Wild, Inconvenient Truth etc
• Culture - Promoting spirits of communal harmony, international brotherhood
• Politics – Lot of stars get straight entry into politics owing to their vast popularity eg Jaya Lalitha, Hema Malini etc
• Bringing affordable entertainment to people• Negative influence - Shows like Shaktiman,
Thumbs Up ads, Movie Stunts can be dangerous.
Real influence on Reel• As real as it gets - Slumdog Millionaire,
No one killed jessica, bandit queen, titanic etc
• Television rating points : TRPs measure is very useful for advertisers, who use it to help them decide which TV channels and programmes to place their advertising in.
• News, Wars, Sports Events, Action events, biographies etc.
• Reality TV – Shows like Big Boss, Roadies, Fear Factor, India’s Got Talent, Saregama are all real people being shown through the screen.
