TrIPOdSHOW TO CHOOSE A TRIpOD

Height & Center Columns

this addresses both maximum height and minimum height.

Want to have your viewfinder at eye level? choose a tripod that

extends to within about 6-inches of eye level (that remaining

6-inches will be taken up by your ballhead and camera). Want to

shoot at ground level? choose a tripod without a center column.

all Really Right Stuff Versa® tripods give you the best of both

worlds: they come standard without center column but accept

a range of accessories, including optional center columns.

Other Factors

the selection of a tripod stems from three inputs: personal

preference and budget, load, and surroundings. a well-

crafted support system is built with quality components that

complement each other and satisfy the genuine needs and

preferences of each shooter. tripod legs, ballhead, quick-

release clamping system, camera and optics—a well chosen

combination, used properly, will yield the finest results with

every use. Buy right the first time, and you will maximize your

investments. this concept is the heart of the Really Right

Stuff support synergy philosophy.

HANdY TIP

The new line of Really Right Stuff Versa® Tripods are the world's only carbon fiber tripods made entirely in the United States from parts acquired exclusively in the US down to the smallest screw.

choosing the right tripod can be an overwhelming experience;

there are so many choices! Really Right Stuff has built a

solid reputation as your camera support experts because we

understand how to select the best support system for you from

the ground up. Here are a number of things to consider when

choosing a new tripod.

Number of Leg Sections

Favor tripods with 3 leg-sections per leg over 4 leg-sections

for most applications. Since each leg section has to telescope

into the previous section, the fourth and final leg section of a 4

leg-sections model is smaller and relatively weaker. So opt for

fewer sections to maximize your support. also, tripods with 3

leg-sections have only two joints per leg. In general terms, the

fewer joints, the better the support; the fewer joints, the less

hassle to extend and collapse.

But there are times when a tripod with 4 leg-sections is a good

choice. If travel and portability are premium considerations for

you, tripods with 4 leg-sections collapse into a shorter closed

length. this can often mean the difference between fitting in

that carry-on suitcase or leaving your tripod behind.

Carbon Fiber or Aluminum? today’s best tripods for discriminating photographers are made

from carbon fiber. their many benefits include:

» greatest weight to stability ratio.

» Easier to handle in extreme cold since the leg sections do not

get as cold as aluminum.

» Dampens vibration faster than aluminum.

» typically half the weight of a comparable aluminum model.

Words from Joe Johnson,

Owner of Really Right Stuff

“a while back, I got an itch to design a tripod that would marry

the Really Right Stuff ideal of soul-satisfying feel and finish with

best-in-class strength and resilience. three years, thousands of

design hours, numerous prototypes and weeks of field-testing

later, I’m confident we succeeded.

Driven to produce the best possible still-photography tripod

money can buy, we committed that all features, materials,

fit and finish meet and exceed the best in the world. the

result is not a mass-produced item available at any corner

shop. We painstakingly machine most components and

assemble each tripod by hand right here in San

luis obispo, california. What we don’t produce

ourselves is all made in the United States-down to

the smallest screw.

this flies in the face of the age of outsourced

production to low-cost countries, but it

allows us total and direct control of the end

product. admittedly the price may be out of

reach for many, but the best tools are worth

the investment if it raises your level of art and

enjoyment of use. We hope you agree there is

no finer camera support gear at any price. We

proudly introduce the first line of premium

carbon-fiber tripods and accessories that

meet the Really Right Stuff design and

quality standards.”

VERSA TRIpOD FEATURES & bENEFITS

» SUREGRIP™ APEX LOCK

other tripods rely on a split apex to keep your accessories in

place, and inherently suffer from a weakened structure and a

lock that relies on friction alone. If inadvertently loosened, it is

possible for the center platform/column to fall out. We solved

this problem with the Really Right Stuff exclusive Suregrip™

apex lock system. our solid aluminum apex has a high strength

stainless steel ring that mechanically locks into place with set

screws. In the locked position, all set screw heads are flush or

slightly below the outside surface of the apex ring. In order for

the platform or column to be removed, all three set screws must

be loosened sufficiently to allow the Suregrip™ apex lock Ring

to clear the corresponding channel in the platform/column. this

gives the photographer a visual safety indicator. carry your tripod

over your shoulder with complete confidence.

» OFFSET LEG JOINTS

tripods must occasionally withstand tremendous bending and

torsion loads. It is crucial that the angle stops and all other

structural joints are well supported. our tripod has offset leg

joints to align the apex with both the angle stops and leg walls.

this allows loads to be transferred straight through the strongest

points of the structure, while providing greatest possible

vibration damping. another benefit is that the tripod is more

compact when collapsed.

» RATCHETING ANGLE STOP

When setting the leg angles, it is important that the angle stop

be fully seated into position. on the tVc-33 it is simple. Just

pull out the stop, raise the leg, and it will automatically engage

into place beginning at the highest setting. Pulling the legs back

down will ratchet the stop into place at the lower settings. this

makes it fast, simple, keeps your fingers safe from pinches, and

reassures that your tripod’s leg angles are set properly.

» RUBBER TWIST LOCKS

Because of the built in anti-rotation of the carbon fiber legs, the

twist lock knobs can be rotated independently. the textured

semi-hard rubber exterior allows for easy adjustments and

outstanding grip with or without gloves.

» WEIGHT HOOK

Hanging a weight enhances the stability of your tripod by

keeping it firmly anchored to the ground. Hang a camera bag,

water bottle, or even a carabiner.

» TEARDROP RUBBER FEET

the unique large diameter teardrop shape keeps leg sidewalls

from touching the ground even at the lowest settings and

makes positive contact with the ground at any angle. the feet

may be interchanged with Really Right Stuff Spikes or Rock

claws to accommodate the toughest terrain. (accessories sold

separately).

WHAT MAkES AN RRS TRIpOD?

» FINISH

Type III Hardcoat Anodizing vs. Powder Coating

anodizing produces a surface that is embedded in the metal,

and not just a superficial coating. Really Right Stuff anodizes all

aluminum parts because it gives greater wear, puncture, and

corrosion resistance compared to other processes like powder

coating.

» MACHINING

CNC vs. Cast Metal:

computer Numerical controlled (cNc) milling machines

can precisely sculpt parts out of solid metal with extreme

precision. this affords excellent control in the design, fit, and

finish of every metal part found on a RRS tripod. other tripod

manufacturers employ mold casting to mass produce metal

parts. We use cNc so we can maintain tighter quality control

over every single part throughout its making.

» MATERIALS

6061 - T6 Billet Aluminum vs. Cast Magnesium

We use 6061-t6 billet aluminum, a special tempered alloy that is

nearly twice as strong as die-cast magnesium

» CARBON FIBER LEGS

the next evolution in carbon fiber tripod leg design: Big and

thin. RRS tripod legs have a large outer diameter and a wall

thickness of only 0.04 inches. they far surpass our competition

in strength-to-weight ratio.

» INCREDIBLE CRUSH RESISTANCE

In a 3–point crush test, our Series 3 carbon fiber tube withstood

a central load nearly double our closest competitor!

» ULTIMATE VIBRATION DAMPING

Vibration damping is crucial for tack-sharp images. the Really

Right Stuff tVc-33 cuts down tremendously on sensor vibration

thanks to our “big and thin” carbon fiber tubes and bulk-mass

joint support design.

they represent an evolutionary step in camera support, offering

the benefits of both a compact traveler and a Versa-style tripod,

all in one. Every structural and technological innovation found

in the tVc-33 has been carried over,

the same “Big & thin” technology that has made our Versa

tripods so successful. Each ‘Pod also benefits from the same

advanced leg-lock technology and anti-twist tubing.

combine our monopod with our MH-01 monopod head for the

perfect ultra-mobile, high capacity support solution. See page

25 for monopod packages with our MH-01 monopod head.

Renowned photo safari leader and Really Right Stuff user andy

Biggs approached us a couple of years ago about developing an

adaptable support system he could recommend to his clients.

thus began our quest to design safari gear that will deliver

unsurpassed long lens support in a demanding african safari

environment. our gear combines the mobility of a monopod

with the stability of a tripod while maintaining a compact

and lightweight setup in a vehicle. the andy Biggs Safari Rig

consists of multiple components that can be used separately or

in combination.

Using custom quick release mechanisms, the monopod easily

detaches from the vehicle when you need to roam and allows

you to return to the vehicle and your former setup effortlessly.

the Rig consists of a Monopod clamp, one or more Ball clamps,

a Safari clamp, and our ta-2-lB Series 2 leveling Base.

Key Features:

» Monopod clamp collars the top tube of the monopod securely

and adjusts to a range of tube diameters. Multiple tapped holes

accept Safari Rig attachments.

» Ball clamps resemble our BH-25 in size & design. their ability to

pan and articulate allows for both height and angle adjustments;

secure your monopod practically anywhere.

» Safari clamp is extremely rugged and highly versatile. Intended

to secure heavy gear to the vertical or horizontal rail in a safari

vehicle, the Safari clamp will just as easily grasp non-uniform

supports like branches, posts, and table tops.

» leveling base on a monopod? Might sound odd, but a rigid

monopod is unable to make even minor leveling adjustments

in response to changing terrain. our ta-2-lB leveling base

mounted to your monopod will deliver ±15° of float; rapid locking

mechanism makes quick adjustments fast and smooth.

AbOVE:Joe field tested our Safari Rig prototype in the Okavango Delta while on safari with Andy Biggs, August 2010. The Rig can be seen here supporting our PG‑02 LLR Pano‑Gimbal head.

TP-243 GrOuNd ’POdour tP-243 ground ’Pod is the strongest, most versatile,

feature-rich ground and tabletop tripod obtainable. We created

a height-adjustable device that handles 500mm and 600mm

lenses with ease, manages practically any type of terrain, allows

our ballheads to get as low to the ground/deck as possible,

handles the grime of working in the dirt, is field-strippable, and

most tellingly, withstands abusive airport baggage handlers! our

tP-243 ’Pod is intuitive, quick to operate, and, as with all Really

Right Stuff designs, showcases aesthetically pleasing lines.

Key Features:

» Entirely cNc machined 6061-t6 aluminum or stainless steel. all

aluminum is type III hard anodized (black) for maximum abrasion

resistance. Weight is a two edged sword. We like light weight

for carrying, but nothing trumps mass for stability.

» Reversible bottom leg sections have stainless steel point at one

end for rugged outdoor use and a rubber tip on the other end for

indoor/table-top use.

» 3-position legs for maximum positioning flexibility. Minimum

height is only 1.9” (48mm).

» Super robust. Rated load capacity is 50lbs (23kg).

» Secondary rubber feet are strategically placed on the inside of each

leg to provide protection and traction when legs are fully splayed.

» comes packed in its own tripod bag.

TIp OpTIONS Each leg has one stainless spike and one rubber bumper. Or replace spikes with set of rubber bumpers.

BALLHEAdSWHICH bALLHEAD SHOULD YOU bUY?

Really Right Stuff designs and manufactures professional grade

tripod ballheads that can support heavy loads, lock solidly,

and move smoothly. all of our ballheads are faster to use and

inherently more stable than 3-axis “pan-tilt” tripod heads.

tripods with ballheads are also much easier to carry and pack

than tripods with pan-tilt heads—no long, protruding handles.

a Really Right Stuff ballhead will help you learn to love your

tripod. aiming and horizon leveling can be accomplished as

one instinctive motion, and rigid lockup takes just a quick twist

of one control. our full-size and mid-size ballheads also offer

variable “drag” (tension) that makes them easy to control.

the Really Right Stuff quick-release system offers implicit

advantages, and all Really Right Stuff ballheads can be

purchased with our quick-release clamps already installed. We

offer four sizes of ballheads: full-sized, mid-sized, compact, and

ultra-light. We also offer a variety of different clamp styles to

meet the needs of all shooters.

BH-55: FuLL-SIZEd BALLHEAdthe BH-55 is the culmination of years of iterative

development based on first-hand experience and abundant

input from seasoned professionals and enthusiasts. our

goal was to build the perfect general-purpose ballhead.

our premise was that aesthetics needn’t play second

fiddle to functionality, that operation should be intuitive

and predictable, and that your investment should be

rewarded with years of satisfaction.

Extensive field use has proven the utility of our innovative

design. the BH-55 delivers solid performance in all

weather and temperature ranges. Its low profile, precision

control knobs, rugged housing, and state of the art quick-

release clamps make our BH-55 the ballhead of choice for

both seasoned professionals and enthusiastic amateurs.

Renowned photographers who make their living using our

ballhead include george lepp, John Shaw, Peter lik, Marc

Muench, Moose Peterson, Norbert Wu, Joe and Mary ann

McDonald, Frans lanting, Kennan Ward, adam Jones and

Doug gardner, art Wolfe, trey Ratcliff, and many, many

others.

BH-40: MId-SIZEd BALLHEAd

the BH-40 is as lightweight and compact as possible without

sacrificing any of the functionality that makes our full-size BH-55

the favorite ballhead of discriminating professional and avid

photographers worldwide. our bestselling BH-40 lR is just a

tad over 1 pound (479g). It is perfect as a traveling/backpacking

head for popular light to mid-sized gear such as 70-200mm/f2.8

and 300mm/f4 lenses, yet even robust enough for occasional

use with full-sized 500mm/f4 lenses. at only 3" high, the

BH-40 lR is the most compact ballhead in its class but delivers

large-size performance and features. It perfectly complements

Really Right Stuff Versa® Series 1 & 2 tripods (or gitzo Series-1

and -2 tripods).

the BH-40 main lock lever is longer on one end, and its shape

makes it easy to crank down and apply enough torque to solidly

lock the ball under any load; t-lever freely clears tripod platforms

with diameters smaller than 2.7-inches (68mm). lever can be

easily re-positioned for better accessibility.

See why Scott Kelby, of Kelby training®, fell in love with his

BH-40 and called it “…the ballhead of the gods.”

A recent customer found the CRD to be the perfect solution for filming a birds eye view of a subject descending a spiral staircase!

Crd-87: CAMErA rOTATION dEVICE

lens collars make recomposition from horizontal to vertical

(and every angle in between) a snap. Unfortunately, many of

our favorite lenses do not have this useful feature. our cRD-87

solves those problems and keeps lens axis centered at any

angle. adjustable components allow for perfect positioning with

virtually any camera & lens combo equipped with Really Right

Stuff quick-release plates. Particularly useful for table-top, and

closeup photography because roll is centered on the lens axis

and foreground-background parallax problems are eliminated!

Fashion photographers love it because there is nothing faster.

the cRD-87 is super-robust and ideal for the studio Portrait,

Fashion, and Product photographer, yet breaks down quickly

and compactly for field and location use.

CRD-87 FEATURES & bENEFITS

» Inner ring rotates a full 360 degrees. Machined detents every

45° allow snap fit without the need to lock ring in place.

» locks solidly at any rotation angle for precise control.

» allows lens axis to be precisely centered on the rotation point.

» Quickly adjusts to fit most cameras; maximum vertical distance

from camera's tripod socket to center of lens not to exceed

86mm. camera must be equipped with Really Right Stuff quick-

release plate.

» Fully compatible with B87-QR flash bracket accessories;

see p60.

» allows lens "nodal point" to be positioned at pivot axis.

» With nearly one foot range of fore-aft adjustment, can be used

HANdY TIP

Joe is 5’9”’ and could comfortably use any of these tripods. Choose a tripod that is no more than 6 to 10” shorter than you are and you won’t have to bend over to look through the viewfinder.

SuPPOrT SuGGESTIONS THE RIGHT HEAD AND LEGS FOR YOU

In our experience most shooters fall into one of these four

categories: ultra-light, compact, mid-sized, or full-sized. We’ve

made some support suggestions based upon the gear you

shoot with. Keep in mind that these suggestions are intended

to be a starting point in your search for an ideal support

system. If you find yourself wavering between one setup or

the other, ask yourself a quick question: Do you lean in the

direction of a heavier, more robust setup? or do you prefer the

idea of a lighter, more portable setup? this can often help you

make your decision. But if you’re still undecided, don’t hesitate

to give us a ring and ask us for our opinion. We’re certain to

have one!

ULTRA-LIGHT

» Is right for you if... You want a very small ballhead for

backpacking/travel, or for mounting a strobe or other accessory.

» Common Gear: Point-n-shoot or small DSlR.

» Support System Options: gitzo Series 0 tripod or tVc-13

tripod (available late 2011) with BH-25 ballhead.

COMpACT

» Is right for you if... You want a compact ballhead for travel and

portability, or you always shoot with lightweight gear.

» Common Gear: Nikon D50/D90 or canon 50D/60D.

» Support System Options: Really Right Stuff tVc-13 tripod

(available late 2011) with BH-30 ballhead.

MID-SIzED

» Is right for you if... You commonly shoot with small and

moderate lenses and you want a capable combo that will be

comfortable at eye height and can handle long exposures

without vibration, moderate gear loads, and the elements.

» Common Gear: Nikon D7000/D700/D3-series or canon

5DMkII/60D/7D/1D-series; medium format. Your biggest

“everyday” lens is a 70-200mm/f2.8 or a 300mm/f4. You may

occasionally use a 300mm/f2.8 - 500mm/f4 lens.

» Support System Options: tVc-23 or tVc-24 tripod with

BH-40 ballhead.

» Packages Offered: tVc-23/BH-40 lR or tVc-24/BH-40 lR;

see p32.

FULL-SIzED

» Is right for you if... You want a very robust ballhead that

can handle studio work, macro setups, and gimbal head

attachments.

» Common Gear: Nikon D3-series or canon 7D/60D/1D-series;

Medium & large format. You regularly use a 300mm/f2.8 lens

and shoot with lots of “heavy artillery” (500mm-600mm).

» Support System Options: Really Right Stuff tVc-33/34

tripods or tP-243 ground ‘pod with BH-55 ballheads or Pg-02

pano gimbal heads.

» Packages Offered: tVc-33/BH-55 or tVc-33/Pg-02; see p33.

SOME GUIDELINES AND COMMENTS

» Make your support choices from top to bottom: the ballhead

you choose depends upon your camera and lenses, and the

tripod legs you choose depend upon which head you pick. All

components should complement each other.

» Load capacity ratings for tripods and tripod heads can be

confusing. There is no standard method to determine load

rating, so comparison among models can be difficult. That’s why

Really Right Stuff provides head & leg recommendations based

upon your current camera and lenses, how you’ll be using the

gear, and how you might be using the gear in the future. We

prefer high performance carbon fiber tripods with our ballheads;

they’re light, compact, and with proper care

deliver a lifetime of use.

» Favor 3 section/leg tripods—there are

only two joints per leg to operate every

time you extend and collapse the tripod

(remember that each joint is a potential

point of weakness if not properly

tightened). Since a 4 section/leg tripod

has one extra joint per leg, they can

be more of a hassle. But do consider

the 4 section/leg models for travel

and portability. Their overall

folded length is shorter than 3

section/leg models, so they fit

into smaller spaces.

» Consider that you really

may need more than one

head/leg setup if you

shoot with both short

lenses and “heavy

artillery” (500mm-

600mm), because the

compromise implicit

with a single setup

is too severe.

Joe Johnson proudly displays Really Right Stuff Versa tripods mounted with our patented ballheads.

BH-30 ballhead.

Remember that these packages are simply a starting place.

You may, for example, prefer to pair our full-sized BH-55

ballhead with our tVc-24 tripod (instead of the larger tVc-33)

for traveling with limited gear allowances. or you may opt for a

screw-knob style clamp on our BH-40 ballhead. We’re happy to

put together the custom package that fits your needs.

all Really Right Stuff clamps are precision-machined in the USa

from solid aircraft-grade aluminum and finished in a beautiful

matte-black anodize. Excess mass is removed to minimize

weight and all corners are radiused for comfort and beauty.

Most clamps are contoured to incorporate a high contrast spirit

level for quick initial leveling in the field, and safety stop relief

grooves allow for generous adjustability. all Really Right Stuff

clamps are guaranteed (materials & workmanship) for 5 years.

Two Clamping Styles:

clamp jaws open and close in one of two ways: by twisting a

knurled knob on our tried & true screw-knob clamps; or by flipping

a single lever on our innovative, patented lever-release clamps.

Two Mounting Styles:

all clamps mount onto heads in one of two ways: they either

spin onto an exposed male threaded stud (threaded either ¼”-20

or 3 ⁄8”-16), or they drop onto a female tapped socket (tapped

either ¼”-20 or metric 6-1.0) and are secured with a screw from

above. choose models with a threaded center hole if spinning

clamp onto a threaded stud. choose models with a non-threaded

(“thru-hole”) center if mounting clamp on any ballhead from

Really Right Stuff, any current model arca-Swiss, and some

Manfrotto models. See clamp Selector table (p39) for help in

choosing the proper clamp.

Various Lengths: our mini (1.5”), 50mm and 60mm length

clamps are suitable for most photography. our longer clamps,

with 80mm (3.2-inch) long clamping jaws, are suitable for large

format or super-telephotos—heavy artillery.

Due to wide variations in other brands of arca-Swiss compatible

plates, we recommend using our lever-release clamps only with

Really Right Stuff or Wimberley brand quick-release plates.

If you own other brand plates, see the note about our plate

exchange policy at bottom of page 39.

Installation Notes If you intend to convert an existing ballhead to accept our

clamp, check to see if the round platform atop the head can

be removed. Some ballheads have a platform that will freely

unscrew from a female socket, tapped 3 ⁄8”-16, in the stem.

Buy our 3 ⁄8”-16 stainless steel stud—order “Stud”, $5.00—to

mate the clamp directly to that stem without the platform.

Many Manfrotto ballheads can be modified in a similar manner,

but the tapped female socket in the stem is metric 6-1.0. Buy

our B2 aS II clamp and fix to the head using a M6-1.0 flathead

metric machine screw. Use loctite type 242 (blue fluid, medium

strength) to keep clamp from twisting; use loctite type 271 (red

fluid, high strength) threadlock liquid for permanent mount. See

page 80 for all hardware and single applications of loctite.

Know Your Clamp!

1. lever 4. Mounting Hole

2. clamp Jaw 5. Spirit level

3. Safety Stop Relief 6. additional Mounting Holes

Mounting Tip: If you have a lever-release clamp, swing the

lever fully open and top load your plate. But if you’re using a

screw-knob clamp, it’s too slow to open the jaws wide enough

for top loading. It’s faster to slide a plate into the clamp from

the end—tilt the front edge of the plate downward, toward the

clamp, and engage the front dovetail so that it rides underneath

the front corner of the clamp’s jaw. Keep that front edge of the

plate in contact with the clamp corner and then level the plate,

and swing the plate’s rear dovetail into the clamp.

CLAMPSFOR ALL REALLY RIGHT STUFF pLATES

SCrEw-KNOB CLAMPSTRADITIONAL CLAMp FOR ALL

AppLICATIONS

the graceful patented Stainless Steel “S”-shaped cam-locking lever

provides desirable benefits over traditional screw-knob clamps:

Easy Top-Loading: In one quick action, the clamp can go from

closed to fully open, allowing easy top-loading of Really Right

Stuff quick-release plates. No more lost shots while fumbling to

feed the plates into the end of the clamp.

Visual Confirmation of Lock Position: You can readily observe

if the lever is locked, half-open, or fully open.

Low Profile: the lever does not protrude above or below the profiles

of the clamp, and in the closed position, the lever closely hugs the

contours of the clamp. this makes it less of a “weed catcher” in

the field and reduces the chance of being damaged in a fall.

Less Abrasive, No Twisting: the smooth contours of the lever

are less abrasive than standard knurled knobs, and for those

with arthritic hands, the graceful lever cams open and close

with just finger force.

Super Tough, Reliable: the Stainless Steel lever delivers a

lifetime of wear and rides on a self-lubricating, wear-resistant

bronze bearing surface. Delivers 50lbs of holding power under

full compression (the fully closed position) with our plates. this

is more than sufficient for any practical photographic application.

Use Lever-Release Clamps with Really Right Stuff plates:

Not all arca-style quick-release plates are machined to the same

exacting specifications as Really Right Stuff plates. For flawless

operation in our lever-release clamps, we recommend only

Really Right Stuff or Wimberley® quick-release plates.

traditional screw-knob quick-release clamps can sustain as

much weight and stress as any tripod head can bear and then

some! also perfect for monopod use.

Captive Knob: Knob stops at maximum opening: cannot be lost

in the field!

Refined Knurling: Beautifully contoured with radiused edges

and a domed end to improve aesthetics and feel.

Light Weight: Screw-knob clamps are about 15% lighter than

their lever-release counterparts.

Use Screw-Knob Clamps with All “Arca-style” Plates:

Screw-knob clamps are more forgiving of plate width than our

lever-release style clamps. any quick-release plate known as

“arca-Swiss style,” no matter the manufacturer, will work great

in our screw-knob clamps. this includes plates made by Kirk,

Foba, Markins, acratech, Novoflex, and arca-Swiss. Note that

gitzo, Bogen, or Manfrotto plates are not arca-style plates. But

you can retrofit your head to accept the Really Right Stuff quick-

release system by referencing our chart on page 39.

MINI-CLAMPS

SLIdING CLAMP PACKAGES

Made for minimal clearance, weight, and compact size, our 1½-

inch mini-length screw-knob clamps excel for minimal clearance

applications. the knob of the mini-clamp bears directly against the

clamp jaw and is captive—can’t be lost in the field.

B2-FAB is our mini-clamp with one centralized ¼”-20 threaded

socket. Note that two small tabs extend from the bottom of the

clamp. these tabs drop into a slot to prevent the clamp from

twisting when mounted on a rail, or can nest with any aS clamp

for back-to-back mounting.

B2-mAS is our mini-clamp with one non-threaded countersunk

hole. Mounts with flat head screw from above (accepts

¼”-20—included—or M6 only). the “+” shaped machined

recess on bottom of clamp can mate tongue-and-groove style

with bottom of B2-FaB.

Sliding clamps mounted on rails offer great versatility; they can

be quickly shifted along the rail to change positioning, and then

locked into place.

ALL CLAMPSWHICH CLAMp IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Clamp Selector Table:

trying to add a clamp to your existing head? the list below

covers the most common ballheads currently on the market.

the clamp options for each ballhead are listed on the right. Note

that some heads or platforms may require additional mounting

hardware for installation. See page 80 for a complete list of

compatible hardware & tools.

Should you choose our patented lever-release clamp or go with

a traditional screw-knob clamp? Most of our shooters choose a

lever-release clamp for its ease of use, the solid snap and feel

of the lever when the clamp is fully closed, the ability to top-

load, and because it’s simply faster in the field. all plates from

Really Right Stuff and Wimberley perform equally well in our

lever-release clamps. But there are limited circumstances when a

screw-knob clamp is a better choice.

Choose a screw-knob clamp if:

» If you want more clamping force than 50 lbs of holding

pressure under full compression.

» If you have a variety of mounting plates from different

manufacturers*. In particular, plates from arca-Swiss,

Markins and acra-tech have shallow dovetails and don't

work well with our lever-release clamps.

» If you have an arca-Swiss monorail camera.

» If you're shooting from a monopod. With a small turn of the

knob, the jaws of a screw-knob clamp can be cracked open ever

so slightly to adjust the balance point of the load. When halfway

open, a lever-release clamp allows the load to freely slide.

192 precision plus packageMini‑clamps can be oriented parallel or perpendicular to rail.

192 Duo packageB2‑Duo clamp accepts plates that run fore‑aft. Clamp knob simultaneously locks plate & rail; nylon thumbscrews keep plate in place if knob is loose. Only compatible with RRS and Wimberley plates.

192 FAS packageFAS Clamp accommodates plates that run left‑right. Index marker assures repeatable positioning.

MOuNTING PLATESFOR CAMERA bODIES, bATTERY GRIpS, COLLARED TELEpHOTO LENSES

our customized plates are all arca-Swiss style quick-release

compatible. they are highly optimized in design and are

precision machined from solid blocks of 6061-t6 aluminum.

our plates are smaller, lighter, and more conforming in shape

than those from other sources. all corners are beautifully

radiused and feature precisely contoured anti-twist flanges for

dedicated mating.

this non-pivoting design serves to align the plate, and

effectively prevents twisting.

Really Right Stuff plates intentionally avoid the use of any cork or

rubber-type padding. there are two very good reasons for this:

» Direct mating of the camera body or lens foot and the

mounting plate—without any intervening sponginess—

improves the mass coupling. this assures best vibration

damping, and enhances rigidity.

» By providing a plate where the flat metal mounting surface

is in direct contact with the tripod socket, there is inherent

protection against the possibility of over-torque on installation.

» We do make very few exceptions and use cork compound

when the disadvantages are out weighed by other factors.

QUICk-RELEASE pLATESEach camera or collared lens that you want to mount on your ballhead will need its own mounting plate. Image below shows a camera body fitted with a conventional body plate mounted in one of our lever‑release clamps.

Quickly mount your camera on your tripod in either landscape or

portrait by using an l-plate. Shaped like an “l”, the plate has two

sets of mounting dovetails; mount using either set. No need to

flop your camera over & down into the drop notch to go vertical.

Instead, use an l-plate and save yourself the hassle and time

you’d have to spend recomposing. also, an l-plate keeps your

load centered—directly atop the tripod’s apex—where you can

retain the best vibration damping & mass coupling.

THE L-PLATE AdVANTAGE

b5D2-L plate for Canon EOS-5D Mark IIPrecisely contoured anti‑twist flanges hug the camera like a glove. Strap lug allows use of optional handstrap. Each L‑plate starts as a block of aluminum and finishes as a sleek complement to your camera. (This plate also shown on camera mounted at left)

bD3-L for Nikon D3All custom L‑plates are designed to provide ample clearance for any ports, doors, drawers, and flaps. Anything that needs access is considered in the design.

bM9-b Replacement base and bM9-b-L plate for Leica M8 & M9The Leica has a base that must be removed to access the SD card. Our unique solution for this elegant camera? Design a superior replacement base that is also a quick‑release plate and accepts L‑Plate and/or Grip.

EXAMpLE OF pLATE WITH TWO ¼” CApTIVE SCREWS (TOp VIEW)

Dovetail Orientation: the dovetail groove on the bottom of each plate has an orientation

that is either left/right, fore/aft, or bidirectional (runs in both

directions). In general, camera body plates slide left-to-right so

that the camera can be centered in the clamp. lens collar Foot

Mounts slide fore-and-aft in the clamp so that a good balance

point can be achieved. Bidirectional dovetails are very versatile,

but since the plate must fit the clamp in both directions, the

dovetail is square and there are no safety stop screws.

EXAMpLE OF pLATE THAT RUNS LEFT/RIGHT IN CLAMp (TOp VIEW) This plate fits a camera body; flange fits snug against the camera back.

EXAMpLE OF pLATE THAT RUNS FORE/AFT IN CLAMp (TOp VIEW) This plate fits a lens collar foot; flange seats against the heel of the foot.

EXAMpLE OF bIDIRECTIONAL pLATE (TOp VIEW) This plate has a flange and the dovetail runs the perimeter of the plate.

Saftey Stops: Safety stop screws prevent plates from slipping through the

clamp if the clamp is not fully closed. on conventional camera

body plates, the safety stop screw is on the right side of the

plate and prevents free fall when the tripod head is flopped

into the drop notch for vertical format. lens collar Foot Mounts

include two safety stops, one each fore-and-aft. No need to

worry that you’ll accidentally push the lens through the clamp.

Mounting Screws: Plates come with captive-type mounting screws that feature a

special, high strength head-to-shank cross section. captive screws

can be released with the twist of a hex key, but otherwise remain

fixed in the hole or slot. Screw sizes are either ¼”-20 or 3/8”-16.

Some plates and rails come with more than one screw. Hex key

tools for installation are included with every plate.

EXAMpLE OF SAFETY STOp SCREWS (bOTTOM VIEW) This plate has two safety stop screws.

Some collared telephoto lenses have a foot that can be

removed. If your lens has this option, choose one of our foot

replacements instead of a lens plate. a replacement foot with

built-in dovetail mounting will be lighter, lower in profile, and

provide the best possible stability for your lens.

chatter experienced when loosening the collar to rotate the lens

in the roll axis. Better support stability translates to improved

optical results. Each collar uses the same foot, lcF-10; this foot

is required and comes with the lens collar packages. the lcF-10

also fits the Nikkor aF-S VR/VR-II 70-200mm/f2.8 lens.

INSERT PHOTO OF

FLASH BRACKET8.5 by 8.5

FLASH BrACKETS FOr OFF-CAMErA FLASH

the use of a strobe to supplement ambient light can solve many

common problems for photographers afield. While the need for

flash may be obvious in closeup and macro applications, the

benefits of flash are less apparent when the main exposure is

based on existing daylight, as the image at left illustrates. In

these situations, a strobe can be skillfully applied to…

… provide critical foreground “fill.”

… add a “catchlight” in the eye of wildlife.

“Fill” lighting is often necessary to reduce excessive contrast,

and flash is the only practical solution to this problem. the

need for adding fill light is obvious in portrait photography

(people and animals). less obvious is the need for flash fill to

better balance a shaded foreground with a brighter background.

Judicious use of gentle strobe fill can dramatically improve the

image, compensate for narrow contrast ranges and extend the

photographic possibilities.

a well-positioned strobe can also add that pleasing catchlight

in the subject’s eyes, especially when lighting conditions are

overcast, foggy, or backlit. Without an “eye spark”, the subject

looks dead. any strobe can be used to produce this critical

catchlight if the strobe is always positioned atop the lens.

Use our flash brackets to deliver all these key benefits. Now

the strobe can always remain atop the lens for pleasing shadow

lines whether the camera is swiveled to horizontal or vertical.

WPF-QR for Event & Location Shooting

this rugged unit is the most portable flash bracket available

anywhere. Designed for use with shorter, non-collared lenses,

this bracket mounts to the side dovetail of our l-plates (l-plate

required; purchase separately). Bracket snaps into place and stays

locked until the spring-loaded release button is pressed. Even

with the heaviest flash, this bracket will never twist or come loose.

Folds completely flat for compact storage in your camera bag.

B-Series For Telephoto Flash

Designed for use primarily with collared telephoto lenses,

B-Series flash brackets are available in three sizes. they are

compatible with rails and plates from Really Right Stuff,

Wimberley, and most Kirk plates. Brackets can also be used

with our Pg-02 Pano-gimbal Head (as full gimbal or side-mount),

full-size Wimberley head, and side-mount action heads such as

Wimberley Side-Kick, Kirk King cobra, and Mongoose heads.

Mount Without Tools

all flash brackets feature a built-in quick-release clamp for tool-

less mounting. Simply open the clamp and slide onto dovetail

(rails for B-Series brackets must have double dovetail). Brackets

precisely accept a Nikon or canon “off-camera” strobe cord

(other cords may fit, but may not seat flush). Buy our custom

adapters to fit Quantum Qflash, Nikon SB-R200 Speedlight Head,

and Nikon Sc-29 strobe cord. our brackets are elegant, “no

compromise” designs machined from solid 6061-t6 aluminum for

lowest profile and minimum weight. Produced with pride here on

the central coast of california.

NEW Completely Redesigned Orbiting Tilt Flash Mount

this new Flash Mount incorporates our

patent-pending quick-release system

for strobes and strobe cords. No more

annoying thumbwheel to lock your

strobe cord in place. Instead, install a thin

adapter to the bottom of your strobe cord

or accessory and snap it in place. to

release, press the QR latch at

back of Flash Mount. this

new QR system is fast, easy,

and rock solid.

Flash Mounts now tilt forward up to 90º for better beam

coverage in closeup work; backward tilt up to 90° for better

bounce flash control. tilt lock Knob has also been improved for

positive tilt lock at any angle.

as always, orbiting Flash Mount can be positioned anywhere

along the hoop. Silky-smooth operation and positive detents

allows Flash Mount to snap into position “on the go.” Hoops

are also reversible: mount with the hoop on the left, or with the

hoop on the right. Depress the stop button, pop off the flash

head, turn it around, and re-install.

NEW pATENT-pENDING QR SYSTEM FOR STRObES

Strobe cords now snap fit into Flash Mount for fast mounting. Install FA‑QR1 adapter (included with flash bracket) to bottom of strobe cord and press into place.

B-SErIES FLASH BrACKETSMOUNT TO TELEpHOTO LENS FOOT

our patented flash brackets come in three sizes—the size you

choose is best determined by not only lens proportions, but also

personal preference. Flash brackets mount to quick-release lens

plate or replacement foot (sold separately).

» Select the smallest bracket that will clear your lens if you

prefer to keep the flash low and close.

» Select a larger bracket if you prefer to maximize the vertical

distance between strobe head and lens.

b85-bFA‑QR Set included

How to Measure for Your Lens:

1. Set your collared lens foot on a flat surface.

2. Using a ruler, measure the distance from the flat surface to

the top of the barrel of the lens.

3. this dimension is the minimum internal clearance needed

by your lens; choose a bracket with an interior clearance

dimension that will accommodate your lens.

lens plate or replacement foot must have at least 0.75”

(19mm) of dovetail free in order to mount a flash bracket. all

flash brackets can accept additional flash mounts. See pages

Modular Portrait Packages deliver maximum versatility for

off-camera flash—ideal for keeping the flash atop short, non-

collared, lenses whether you’re hand holding or tripod mounting.

all packages come with one flash bracket and one mounting

rail, our MPR-cl. Portrait Packages mount to the camera body’s

quick-release plate (purchase camera body plate separately)—a

conventional body plate works fine, but an l-plate adds the

ability to tripod mount in vertical aspect.

Portrait Packages come in three sizes to accommodate your

camera proportions and personal preference:

» Smallest package, B85-B Portrait Package, fits smaller

bodies like Nikon D50/D40, canon Rebel Xt/Xti, and Nikon

D300/D700/canon 40D without their add-on battery packs.

» the mid-sized package, B87-QR Portrait Package, fits larger

bodies like Nikon D3-series, canon 5D & 1D-series, and Nikon

D700/canon 5D/40D with their add-on battery packs.

» Select largest package, B91-QR Portrait Package, if you

prefer to maximize vertical distance between strobe head

and lens (strobe may be offset from center in horizontal

orientation).

Panorama photography has emerged as a growing passion that

any shooter can readily achieve. Digital panoramas are created

by shooting multiple overlapping images, and then stitching

them together with software. to shoot an exceptional panorama

that is a treat to display, two primary factors must be carefully

considered: leveling and elimination of parallax.

kEEp IT LEVEL overlapping images for single-row panoramas are typically shot

from left to right in a single row, keeping the camera perfectly

level while panning. Keeping the camera level maintains align-

ment of vertical and horizontal objects, making the stitching

process easier. Simplify your life and buy our Pcl-1 panning

clamp. With this clamp mounted on your ballhead, you’re level

in just moments. No need for bulky leveling bases or panorama-

specific heads. leveling is now quick and painless.

ELIMINATE pARALLAX Image parallax occurs when near and far objects don’t line up in

the same location in overlapping images. Eliminate the effects

of parallax by placing the optical center of the lens (not the

camera) directly over the point of rotation. But how? add one of

our nodal slides. these long rails with built-in clamps mount to

the bottom of your camera body plate and are the perfect way to

shift your camera and lens back so that the optical center of the

lens, commonly called the nodal point, can be correctly posi-

tioned directly over the pivot center.

pCL-DVTL

If you already have a Really Right Stuff clamp on your ballhead,

don't remove it to add the panning clamp. Just use our Pcl-DVtl

mounting dovetail. this slim plate screws onto the bottom of our

panning clamp and allows you to drop the Pcl-1 into your existing

clamp for only those times when you want to shoot panos. Very

convenient! and when you're done shooting, just slip the panning

clamp back into its custom neoprene pouch (included with Pcl-1)

and drop it in your camera bag.

pARALLAX & NODAL pOINT EXpLAINED

these concepts can be bewildering, but their influence on

creating seamless panoramas can be demonstrated with a simple

experiment rather than through an optics lesson. try the following

experiment: With one eye closed, extend your arm and point your

thumb up. line your thumb up with the side of a door frame. Now,

turn your head left and right. Notice how the door frame shifts

as you turn your head? this is an example of image parallax due

to the fact that the nodal point (the optical center) of your eye is

not over the center of your head rotation. You can also do this

experiment with a camera and attached lens. Pivot the camera left

and right over its tripod mount and you will notice the same effect

as background objects shift relative to foreground objects (say,

a nearby fence post versus a distant fence post). But if you pivot

the camera at a specific point under the lens, you’ll notice that the

near and far objects remain aligned. this specific point of rotation

is the entrance pupil of the lens (commonly called the nodal point,

or optical center). the idea is that parallax can be eliminated by

mounting the camera on the ballhead so the nodal point of the lens

sits directly over the rotation axis of the ballhead.

WHY USE A pANNING CLAMp?

a panning clamp simplifies the number of steps required to level your

gear. No matter what angle your tripod and ballhead is positioned,

just move the ball until the panning clamp is level. lock down the ball

and pan atop the ball. get level in just one step.

HOw TO SHOOT A PANOlet's walk through shooting a single row pano, step by step,

using our Pano Elements Package, a ballhead, and a Really Right

Stuff quick-release plate on your camera.

STEp 3 Mount CameraIf you have an L‑plate, securely mount your camera in portrait mode in the clamp at the end of the nodal slide. If you have a conventional plate, securely mount your camera in landscape mode. Use the laser‑engraved centering index marks to properly align your camera in the nodal slide's clamp.

STEp 1 Mount Nodal SlideMount panning clamp onto head. Open panning clamp and top‑load MPR‑CL II nodal slide. Exact position isn't important. Tighten clamp securely.

STEp 4 position Nodal SlideLoosen the clamp on the PCL‑1, and slide the MPR‑CL II fore or aft until you've aligned the optical center of the lens with the correct laser‑engraved index mark on the PCL‑1 panning clamp. Tighten clamp securely. See our website for detailed instructions on finding the nodal point for your lens.

STEp 5 Camera SettingsSet exposure mode to Manual. Not sure what exposure to set? Pan your scene and snap a few images in Aperture Priority; set an aperture that will give you the depth of field that you want. Assuming you're shooting digital, review images and compare the shutter speed that your camera chose for the series; select a shutter speed that will be acceptable across the entire image. Now switch your camera to Manual and set both aperture and shutter speed. Turn off Auto White‑Balance. Instead, set the White Balance manually. For most landscape scenes, the Sunny setting is just fine. Now you're ready to shoot!

STEp 2 Get it LevelLoosen the ballhead so that the ball moves freely, and shift ball until the large, high contrast spirit level in the MPR‑CL II nodal slide indicates level. Always opt to reference the larger spirit level of the MPR‑CL II rather than the much smaller level of the panning clamp. Lock down the ball (make sure the ballhead's panning base is also locked).

HANdY TIP

DON’T FORGET TO SHOOT YOUR PANO IN MANUAL! Manual exposure, manual white balance, and manual focus.

CLOSEuP ANd MACrO PHOTOGrAPHYpRECISION-MACHINED IN THE USA

the absorbing realm of closeup photography (meaning image

scales from 1:10 to 1:1) and photomacrography (meaning image

magnification from 1:1 to 20:1 or more) often calls for special

techniques and special tools to achieve optimum results.

For nature and wildlife subjects, it is prudent to plan for up

to ≈ 2X in the field, and to ≈ 4X in the studio. In the closeup

range to ≈ 1:5 (20% of life size), conventional optics and normal

techniques suffice, but the going gets tougher as the subject

gets smaller. these problems involve: gaining sufficient working

distance, focusing accuracy, depth of field, resolution loss due

to diffraction effect, desired final (enlarged) image resolution,

and, of course, lighting. Many books have been written that

address solutions—we recommend John Shaw’s books.

While screw-on closeup lenses (particularly the special two

element types corrected for use with telephoto lenses, e.g.

Nikon’s 3t, 4t, 5t, 6t and canon 500D) and supplementary

extension tubes and teleconverters will get you close, there

will come a time when every serious closeup shooter feels the

irresistible lust to invest in what the trade calls a “macro lens.”

these are special closeup lenses (also quite usable for general

photography) that are highly corrected for close range imaging,

and are capable of focusing all the way from infinity down to 1:2,

or even to 1:1, all by themselves.

“Macro” Lenses

the most generally popular “macro lens” is about 50 to 60mm

in focal length. that’s good for stamps & coins, but lousy for

nature and wildlife work. that focal length is too short to provide

adequate working distance, and the angle of coverage is too

wide to isolate the subject.

the next step is a “macro lens” in a 100mm to 105mm focal

length. these are better, but still entail a lot of compromise in

actual usage. Here’s why:

» Working distance: It’s simply not adequate for live subjects.

the modern 105mm focal length “macro” lens turns out to

be ≈ 80mm when it’s close-focused.

» angle of coverage: It’s too wide to provide good control of

background selectivity. It’s very difficult to truly isolate the

subject—make it “pop.”

» No tripod collar: Most 105mm “macros” don’t have a

rotating collar. given the difficulties implicit in careful closeup

focusing and framing, it’s truly agonizing to begin all over

again when you want to swing from horizontal to vertical

aspect (although much less so if your camera is equipped

with an RRS l-plate). Beware of the poorly executed collar

on the original canon 100mm/f2.8 lens (non-IS version): it’s

much too close to the lens mount, and the lens plate on the

foot will hit certain camera body grips when rotating from

horizontal to vertical.

these shortcomings are all neatly solved by the 180-200mm

“macros”. they offer double the working distance, tight

acceptance angles for easy background control, superior balance

& stability, and the convenience of a tripod collar. love those

200mm macros!

another advantage gained when using any 200mm focal length

lens for closeups is the more evenly distributed lighting that

the subject receives when using flash. the lens’ longer working

distance mitigates inverse square law light fall-off. a strobe can

be applied with more natural results and there’s less background

light fall-off.

Macro Flash

In closeup work, flash will often be needed to permit the use

of small (f/11-16) apertures to assure adequate depth-of-field at

an acceptable exposure duration. also—closeup subjects may

require flash fill to reduce excessive contrast, or to produce

catchlights, or to enhance modeling.

It is seldom viable, when working close, to mount a strobe in

the camera’s hot shoe. that position is too low, does not offer

the needed 15-30˚ tilt for beam aiming, and is off-axis in vertical

aspect. add one of our flash brackets for more effective flash

placement. More than one off-camera remote strobe may be

necessary to lighten a dark background, or to provide rimlight, or

backlight, on the subject; to accomplish this, add a second flash

mount to your flash bracket.

1:1 stitched panorama images are easy with our B150-B Ultimate Package. Set the lens to 1:1; focus using the “y-axis” rail; shift laterally using the “x-axis” rail. With a full-frame sensor, a shift of 20mm in portrait mode (or 30min in landscape mode) will allow about 20% overlap.

B150-B MACrO FOCuSING rAILRemember that as you focus a true macro lens,

magnification changes. to maintain your desired

magnification, you need to move the camera to obtain the

correct focus point. this is an exercise in frustration without

a macro focusing rail. the B150-B is our premium linear

motion lead screw focusing stage and rail. the B150-B is designed

to mate seamlessly with our quick-release system in as compact

a package as possible. the bottom rail comprises a Really Right

while the stage integrates our patented lever clamp that connects

directly to your Really Right Stuff camera plate.

b150-b Ultimate packageIncludes two B150‑B Macro Focusing Rails for greater control over fine positioning. Using two B150‑B rails delivers geared motion both fore and aft as well as left to right. This package also offers the versatility of allowing the use of both camera plates and lens plates.

b150-b FEATURES

» Stage release lever allows positive lock & release of stage

(see closeup image at bottom of column).

» Really Right Stuff compatible dovetail extends along the bottom

of the rail. Rail can also be mounted using ¼”-20 tripod socket.

» Integral lever-release clamp offers optimum quick release

convenience with an ultra-low profile.

» Make gross adjustment by shifting either the stage, rail, or both.

» Fine adjustment is made with the lead screw focusing

stage, which provides additional 103mm of movement. total

adjustment range is 231mm (9”).

» laser-engraved index marks on clamp assist lateral positioning;

one on center, two 24mm apart on center, and two 36mm

apart on center. Rail is laser-engraved on both sides in 1mm

increments.

» Precision cNc machined in the USa from solid aircraft aluminum

and finished in a beautiful matte-black anodize. all excess mass

is removed to minimize weight and all corners are radiused for

beauty and comfort.

» comes packed in a lightweight, snug-fitting neoprene op/tech

USa Soft Pouch™ protective case with logo and built-in locking

belt-clip.

» also makes a great nodal point rail for shooting panos.

» Need geared motion in both the “X” and “Y” axes? Stack a

second B150-B for the Ultimate B150-B Package.

b150-b pACkAGES the clamp channel on our B150-B has a fixed orientation

suitable for mounting conventional body plates only—plates

with dovetails running left/right, not fore/aft. If you’re shooting

with a macro lens with tripod collar, or need greater lateral

shifting capability, choose one of our B150-B Packages instead.

Depress Stage Release button to disengage stage from lead screw; twist to engage in locked mode.

with a robust ballhead, a camera bar can be used as a “boom”

to cantilever the camera into positions that are difficult to get to

with your tripod alone.
