Reasoning Through the Biblical Narrative—Orthodoxy

Carver’s Christian Studies is a full program with multiple facets, just one of them being an academic study of the Bible and many other sources written by Christians. That course work involves serious study; other aspects of our program involve service and worship. No element of the program requires faith but does challenge all our youth to grow in faith. In the words of the late Keith Green, “Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than going to McDonald's makes you a hamburger!" Attending a Christian school does not make each of us Christian BUT this is a great place to explore and maybe embrace Christianity, humanity and faith. Over the years, returning alumni, some who are committed Christians and some who are not, have voiced appreciation for the authentic, open-minded, respectful way teachers strive to do this. In the high school years, there is a lot going on for students, spiritually as much as physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. For some, this is a time of deepening commitment to Christian discipleship; for others this is an opportunity to admit doubts and explore questions. We encourage our students’ development and ability to reason through every program of Carver, especially in Christian Studies and all benefit by this – believers, skeptics and even atheists. In Isaiah 1, it was the Lord who said, “Come let us reason together.” Excellence in education demands that!

Reasoning Through the Biblical Narrative—Orthopraxy

“Religions are generally defined by one of two things: belief or practice. These are the concepts of orthodoxy (belief in a doctrine) and orthopraxy (emphasis on practice or action).” Catherine Beyer www.thoughtco.com/orthopraxy-vs-orthodoxy-95857 In Carver’s Christian Studies program, our teaching practices are shaped by the goal of developing a Christian Worldview in all of our students. This is not the same as faith formation; a worldview is simply the thoughts and beliefs we hold about our self and the world. Worldview is generally subconscious and, therefore, perhaps more than faith, shapes our every choice. Because of this, our Christian Studies program involves intentional activities directed by “the Great Commission.”

Loving Our Neighbours Mr. Liu’s Christian Studies grade 8 classes have all had an opportunity to choose ways of expressing care and kindness to others. In the colder months, our 8C students went out to shovel show for Carver’s nearest neighbours, a very practical expression of care. The students in 8B recently collected toiletries to give to the Women’s Centre at UGM. When someone has almost no money there exist practical decisions between bread and soap; while soap is important, bread wins every time. They provided for both. The 8A students, in the last few weeks have been visiting nearby Derby Manor. Through a one-to-one Buddy Program, our students helped seniors learn about technology (mostly iPads), played games like Mah Jong and chatted about anything and everything.

Student-Teacher-Parent Conferences As you know, we are a much fuller school this year than last year. With this in mind, we urge parents to thoughtfully choose to book conference time with three or four teachers, no more. This will enable all of our families to have face-to-face time with their child’s teachers. Thank you. April Student-Teacher-Parent Conferences are as follows: Thursday, April 26 from 9.00 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. for Grades 7 to 9 (Grades 7-9: no a.m. and p.m. classes | Grades 10-12: only a.m. classes)

Thursday, April 26 from 2.00 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. for Grades 10 to 12 Friday, April 27 from 1.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. for Grades 7 to 12 (No a.m. and p.m. classes for Grades 7-12)

Student-Led, Project-Based Learning: Recreating History Students in 7A and 7W were asked to design, plan, and carry out an extended research project on their chosen topic for this ancient Greece unit. Some of the topics chosen were Spartans, Olympics, Parthenon, Greek Mythology, and Greek Food. Individually or with a partner, students could present their research project through various modes of presentation including video presentation, 3D model, Minecraft, etc. Moreover, students had to complete a write-up portion as part of their project and present their research to the class. All the projects were done really well and students spent hours carrying out their research. To illustrate what some of the students did to display their talents and creativity: Naomi and Kiyah made a 3D model of the Parthenon out of cardboard stock and Styrofoam. Jeremy made a similar model out of Lego pieces. Emma and Kiana decided to make a Hydra out of paper mache.

VCS Uniform Guidelines 2018-2019 for Grade 8-12

General Guidelines Current Carver students may continue to wear their Carver uniform pieces as we begin to transition to the new VCS

Daily Wear Uniform Details The following guidelines are for the uniform which students will wear at school during the regular school day. Our aim was to make the uniform casual and comfortable to wear on a day to day basis. Formal and Special Event Uniform Details Boys and Girls: White polo shirt with new logo (must be purchased from Martket) Grey cardigan or grey V-neck pullover or grey crew neck pullover with new logo (must be purchased from Martket) Black shoes and socks Boys: Navy blue pants (can be purchased from Martket or other Uniform Committee recommended sources**) Girls: Navy blue pants (can be purchased from Martket or other Uniform Committee recommended sources**) or navy blue skort (must be

We hope to have a photo book ready to send out to the high school parents and students in the next few weeks.

VCS Uniforms On behalf of the VCS Uniform Committee, we are excited to give an update on the new VCS uniform. We have been working with Martket Branding who will be our new uniform supplier moving forward. They are committed to making the process as easy, accessible and affordable as possible. All the uniform pieces can be ordered online on the VCS - School Wear online store they have developed for us. The online store will be open to families with students heading into Gr. 8-12 for the 2018/19 school year from May 1 - 15. The link to the online store will be provided to families on May 1st. In order to ensure delivery of the new uniform pieces before the end of the current school year so that everyone is ready for the 2018/19 school year, we need to begin the fitting and ordering process as soon as possible. The official fitting date for the new uniform will be on Tuesday, May 1 from 1:00 - 7:00 pm and will take place at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West. All families needing to order uniform pieces should sign up for a fitting time through the following SignUp Genius. More details about the fittings are included in the link. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please feel free to contact Mrs. De Boer at [email protected]

Fraser Institute Rankings The Fraser rankings for 2015/16 have been released. The endless and varied debate on the value or lack of and the almost infinite nu-ances that determine the results continues in our province. We continue to do very well alongside our two elementary schools. Carver staff look closer at the details over an extended sampling and general trends as a way to inform our practice. We try to use the results wisely and in their proper perspective to build a better Carver as a strong transitional foundation to John Knox and Vancouver Christian high schools and their new programs.
