“Cyclone FANI which hit Odisha on May 3 was the most intense cyclonicstorm crossing the State coast during pre-monsoon season in the satellite
era since 1965”, said Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
Rebuilding Odisha
The estimation of the Odisha State Relief Commission says, the cyclone has affected 1.65crores of people covering around 18000 villages in 159 blocks and 52 Urban Local bodiesof 14 districts in the State. The devastation has demolished about 5,08,467 houses withdamage of assets and daily household needs, more than 7000 educational institutions(5244 Primary Schools, 1547 High Schools & 270 Higher Education Institutions), 1031primary health centres, 152985 hectors of cultivated land and 1.56 lakhs of electricitypolls leaving the localities with deserted looks. Cyclone FANI has left destruction in itswake, not even sparing the trees of the coastal districts in Odisha. More than 10 milliontrees including the ecologically sensitive varieties were uprooted with many moredamaged in the extremely severe cyclone
