Rec President’s Message Dear WORC Membership:
As we proceed into August, I hope all is well and your homes are blessed with good health. The weather has been hot and it has been great to see many of you enjoying our beautiful beach and pools. I would like to begin by thanking the Membership for their continued cooperation and resilience during this pandemic. Opening our amenities safely has been our goal and everyone’s steadfast support has made that possible! Many thanks to all who were able to attend the Easter egg hunt last Friday night. This event was well attended and enjoyed by the kids, parents, and grandparents. Special thanks to Paula Viscardi and Denise McFadden, this year's Easter bunny, along with the countless volunteers for putting this event together and all the members who donated Easter eggs and candy. Fr. Patrick Flanagan joined us once again to celebrate Mass overlooking our magnificent view of the bay. This Mass celebrated The First Holy Communion of Riley Hugenuin and Jake Conlon. This was truly a special day for our community. Moving forward, once again, Paula will be organizing the return of Summerween on August 14th. Further details is posted in this dispatch.
Big E Entertainment will be planning to have the annual Beach Bonfire rescheduled from August 7th to Friday, August 28th. This year’s Labor Day Parade will pay a special tribute and honor all essential workers, first responders and the military. In addition, anyone who was not able to celebrate a special event or milestone in their lives, such as a graduation, prom or religious ceremony, please feel free to join the parade in your uniforms, cap and gowns, etc. Let’s celebrate together as a community! I would like to encourage anyone else who would like to participate in the parade to go with a patriotic theme, this includes decorating golf carts. Please no political signs or flags. I want to again thank everyone for their continued support and dedication to practicing social distancing, and when not possible, wearing a face covering. I know having these events can be challenging this summer due to the pandemic. Traditions have always been a big part of WORC, and even though they may look a little different this year, I am committed to keeping these traditions for the future generations.
Stay Safe,
--Steve Harrigan, WORC Recreation President

Paul and Denise McFadden have two essential workers in their family:
Their daughter, Heather McFadden Echevarria, a Speech Pathologist in a Nursing Home that lost more than a third of their population to COVID-19, which in turn, led to Heather coming down with the virus herself. And their granddaughter, Jordan Echevarria, who is an EMT, riding with the Sayville Community Ambulance, serving our five surrounding towns, and responding to numerous COVID calls. Both have been dealing with extraordinary situations, during this Pandemic time.

Anne Rizzo of 223 Pine Lane, would like to honor her granddaughter, Emily, a nurse at St. Frances Hospital in Roslyn, NY. She is currently caring for Corona virus patients in the ICU on ventilators. During every shift she is exposed to the virus, but also to the emotional and physical toll of caring for people in such critical condition, who do not have their own families with them. Many kind friends have donated items to her such as masks, sanitizers, meals and goodie bags to show Emily and her fellow healthcare workers their support. I am deeply grateful that she has such supportive friends, as well as our whole family behind her. I love her very much and want her to know how thankful we all are.
My wife, Nancy Homza (Eichorn), Certified Med. Surg. R.N, works at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Nancy was on the very front line, in the trenches all during the height of the Covid 19 pandemic. The hospital was over 200% normal occupancy. They had patients in every conceivable location. LIJ even constructed new units and opened up other nursing units that had been closed for years. To say it was a war is an understatement. But my Wife went to work as usual. She was deployed all over the medical center. I am so very proud of her. She & her co-workers are all true heroes. She’s on the right hand side, her co-worker Kelsey R.N. is on the left.
- John Homza, 41 Spruce __________________________________________________
I would like to thank my Uncle, John Homza, Inventory Control Analyst for Long Island Jewish Hospital. He was responsible for finding, buying, and supplying PPE for the entire hospital.

WORCMEN’SGOLFGROUPAn Ode to Jerry Seinfeld
It’s August, but is it really? Yes, it’s warm – hot even. Sunsets abound, beautiful as ever. The beaches are open, but they feel different, don’t they? School is around the corner, or is it? It’s the stretch run in the baseball season – or is it just the opening weeks of a season that is soooo very different? In Jerry’s world, the Mets win the World Series this year, even if they don’t play it. Football is coming, but many have opted out already. It’s a presidential election year but there are no conventions to speak of or watch (yeah!!!?). August and everything after looks quite different this year.
On the links, we play, marching every Saturday into the mosquito-heavy first 4 holes of the early morning dew. We watch Mr Compliance himself, Jim Barling, par a hole every now and then while offering support and encouragement to all his buds. (You made the article, JB!). Nothing like Sir James in the whole world. Love him! We miss not seeing Jackie Gleason out there, trying to get his wrist back into shape. We watch Tom “The Animal” Scalfano play every week with his preferred partner, Robbie “Baseball” Halagarda. We see Butch “Humphrey” Bogart (Happy Bday, Butchie!) playing with his usual bud, Andy “Citi Field” Shea. Lieutenant (Retired) Pat Reilly is out early, raring to go, leading the first group charge - every week, it seems. We see My Little Johnny Laurence shoot an 82, followed by a higher number, but always raring to come back. We see Nunzio “Stallion” Masone follow up a 40 with a 54 like only he seems capable of doing. We’re glad to have Rickie Schifini and Robert Maxwell back from Florida. We wish Mongo was here too. The Mighty Quinn carrying his bag, most of the time – happy to be doing one of his favorite things, playing golf. Paul “Mr Under Armour” Smith, looking sartorially splendid in his personal attire, especially so since he got his hair cut. Positive Pete purviews all with perplex aplomb and purple passion.
We invite our non-WORC friends, Smarty Senecal, Bill “Carl Spackler” Gardner, Dave and Larry, Jimmy Carroll, and Davey I into the madness. We play golf for glory and prizes. We have “Don’t Mess with Texas” Stevie Dalton back into the fold. All is off with the world, but for a few hours every Saturday, some things work well.
Thank you, Jerry – for nothing, and of course, for everything.
Summer Series and golf reporting return with our next episode. For now, here’s to August and to Jerry.
