Green Growth Development in Lagos State Lagos State is the smallest in Landmass but the

most populous in Nigeria with 18million population. 60% off industrial activities in Nigeria happen in the

State. It is the only State that has the office of

“Transformation” to green reforms and growth in the Chief Executive Officer/ Governor’s office in Nigeria .

This “Office” oversees green growth in Lagos State. SPARC- State Partnership for Accountability,

Responsiveness‘ and Commitment in Governance. Road Networks on Easy and Pollution free Transportation

Infrastructures. Resources Usage within the State

Biomass use in the Industry in Lagos

Nigeria has abundant biomass resources but there is no biomass industry

One major initiative (Okobaba Sawdust) is underway in Lagos State

Key barriers are costs of transportation and ability to commercialize biomass sources.

About Okobaba

• Established in the 1940’s in the riverine community on the Lagos Mainland

• 50,000-100,000 residents and an area of 25 hectares in 6 political wards

• Considered second largest saw mill community in Africa and the largest in West Africa.

• Approximately 200 active family-owned sawmills

• It is a point of call for consumers of wood for furniture and firewood.

Energy consumption and emission rate is high in Lagos compared to other cities in Nigeria.

Industries encouraged on energy efficiency and renewable energy applications

• LASEPA is launching a green consumer initiative • Goal is to bring Lagos consumers to the frontline to salvage the changing climate • The is approach to have a consumer label detail the carbon footprint of a product/service and a commitment by its producer to reduce it. • Expected to encourage industries to embrace green solutions to reduce their carbon footprints • Details can be found on the website; http://lagoscarbonmanagement.org

Lagos state Initiative: Energy efficiency in Lightings

Lagos state is working with private investors to replace bulbs with energy saving lamps in some selected local government areas in the state

This will be extended to other local government areas in a successive plan.
