capped Rwenzoris. Te mighty NileRiver, the worlds longest river, surges out o Lake Victoria, thecontinents largest lake. One o thehighest concentration o primates inthe world, including more than halo all remaining mountain gorillas, roams its orests. And the mergingo habitats rom eastern, western andnorthern Arica produces arguablythe worlds best best bird-watching.On top o all this a growing varietyo activities has made Uganda theadrenaline center o East Arica, theres no such thing as a crowdin even the most popular nationalparks and the capital Kampala is saerand riendlier than most in Arica.Winston Churchill called it Pearl oArica. He was right.

Depending on where you aregoing to live and work, theaccommodation cost and

standard is dierent, the N managerand the team o AIESEC Uganda canand will help you sort this out i youlet your need known.

Trainees in KampalaTere is always roomin the MemberCommittee House(MC House) oAIESEC Uganda,it is a well-urnished house

with a large courtyard, approximately10 minutes rom thecity depending on thetrac, here trainees can stay or theintended period at a cost o US$100,and this covers water and el ectricity.Te same or interns under AIESECKyambogo University which has ahouse just a ew meters rom theMC House. Tere are also studenthostels around Makerere University

where interns pay US$300 or asemester (Jan-May, Aug-Dec) the eescover electricity and water. Te eeshowever, are dierent or dierenthostels (dormitory). Te rooms, bathrooms may be shared and thereis a security system with a gate keeperat every hostel, the hostels are tted

with beds but laundry machines arenot common in Uganda. Teremay not be warm showers butthe Ugandan way o boiling

while here, Uganda however,is a generally warm countryand you may not need a

    warm shower.

OthertraineesSome organisations oeraccommodation to trainees whileothers are hosted by host amilies, theremay be a chance o the organizationarranging accommodation and thetrainee can pay or the service, wehowever recommend that you discussthis with the N manager.

The legal tender (currency)o Uganda is the Ugandanshilling and this diers rom

other east Arican currencies in valueand appearance. Tere are coins andnotes. We have notes ranging romUSh1000 to USh50000 and coinsrom USh50 to USh500. Ugandahas a large chain o Banks and

AMs (Barclays, Stanbic, StandardChartered, etc) around Kampala andin the country side, these accept VISAand some though ew accept MasterCards, you need to inorm your homebank that you are travelling so theymay not cancel your AM once theynotice transactions rom Uganda. Werecommend that you carry some cash

with you, at least 100$. We suggestthat you i you are carrying cash docarry US Dollars as they are commonand easy to exchange around allForex trading bureaus and banks inKampala. EUROs are also exchangedand British pounds do not exchangemoney with a money trader outsideor along a street as you may be givenake notes.

Advice: take banknotes of at least

    [communications]

    [transport]

Uganda has many telecommunication companiesand networks (MN, Orange,

UL, Warid, Airtel among others)depending on where one shall travelto, all networks are the same apartrom connectivity, the three networksMN, UL and Airtel have a widecoverage and their services can beaccessed anywhere in the country.Buy a SIM card at the airport uponarrival or around Kampala, thisshould cost around US$1 to US$2.

Internet AccessTere is also a large pool o internetcaes around the city and major towns

in the country, here one pays rangingrom US$1 (USh2500) per hour andat some places even cheaper. You canalso print, scan and photocopy romthese places at almost the same pricesthough can change rom one placeto another.

Also 3G internet modems arecommonly used and the above telecomcompanies also have internet services.he most advantageous mobileinternet service provider in terms oprice is Warid (US$1=250Mb). ButOrange has stronger signal even inrural places. Both operators providespeed 0.5 to 2.5 Mb/s so you couldhave comortable skype calls.

    3G modem = US$50 (USh90000)

Trac jams are a major headachein Kampala, so no matter

where youre going in the city, plan ahead i you need to get thereat an appointed time. Rush houris particularly bad, usually rom7.30am to 9.30am, 1pm to 2.30pm

and 4.30pm to 7.30pm; on Friday itseems to last all day.To/From the Airporthe international airport is atEntebbe, 40km rom Kampala. Aspecial-hire rom Kampala to theairport costs about USh50000. Askat the tourist oce in the airport tosee i this changed beore bargainingwith the drivers. Te cheapest optionis to take minibus between Kampala(rom either taxi park) and Entebbe(USh, 45 minutes), and then catcha saloon car shared taxi (USh1500per person) to the airport, i you cannd one.Tere are three main modes otransport in Uganda.

Boda-bodasMotorbike taxis are the astest wayto get around Kampala since theycan weave in and out o the trafc

jams. Its not necessarily the saestway to travel since some o thedrivers are quiet reckless: the NewVision newspaper has reported thaton average there are ve deaths dailyas a result o boda-boda accidents.Boda-boda are best avoided at night.

Drivers have imposed an unocialminimum are i USh1000 around

the city center and are pretty goodabout sticking to it. Te are rom thecenter out to the MC or LC Housesis likely to be USh2000 to USh3000.Boda-bodas can also be hired by thehour or day, but prices will dependon how big a swath o the city you

    plan to tackle.www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boda-boda

MatatusTe ubiquitous white and blueminibus taxis an out rom the citycenter to virtually every point inKampala. Many start in the taxi parks(or most destinations you can useeither park), however its quicker tofag one down on Kampala Rd as theydont needto navigate the nightmaretailbacks around taxi parks.

Kampala has two main taxiparks or minibuses, and bothserve destinations around thecountry as well as within Kampala

itsel. Although packed beyondbelie theres a signicant degree oorganisation. Te old taxi park is thebusier o the two and serves towns ineastern Uganda; the nearby new taxipark services western and northerndestinations. Buses to Entebbe leave

    rom both.www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matatu

Special-Hire TaxiIn Kampala there are plenty

o special-hire taxis. Mostare unmarked to avoid

licensing and taxes, but i you see a car

with its door openor with the driversitting behind the

wheel while parked, its probably a special

    hire. Teyre alwaysound outside hotels

(except or the cheapest),near busy shipping areas

and at the taxi and bus parks. At night they wait in great numbersoutside popular bars and clubs.

    A standard short-distance areis around USh3000 to USh5000.

Youll be looking at USh6000 romthe UWA ofce or Kisimenti, andUSh10000 to the Kabalagala/GabaRd area. I you hire by the hour, andarent moving much beyond the citycenter, you should be able to payUSh10000. Prices will be higher atnight and during club rush hour.
