The circus is an event that Murat is proud tomake available to the children and their families inour community. Through our philanthropy, wemake it possible for many handicap and variousschool groups to experience the thrill and excitementof attending a circus.

We appreciate that so many ofMurat’s nobles and their ladies were able to attend. We hope you enjoyed the food, the music, and thefellowship as much as we did. The Ladies CornerKay Hinshaw
With the arrival of spring, new life leaps forth as our yardsturn a luscious green, spring flowers pop through the soil, andthe trees once again leaf out to give us the beauty we alwaysdepend on each year. After enduring the winter months, springgives us a new outlook on life ... another opportunity after ourNew Year’s resolutions to renew our commitment to those thingsin our lives that are important. Hopefully, your involvement andcommitment to Murat is among those things you will give prior-ity to and find time to give of yourself.
The Valentine theme for the “Ladies Night Out” in theTunisian Room was colorful and uplifting. It was the sameevening as the Little Pig event for our nobles, introducing Murat’snew Outer Guard. It was a great evening with 65 ladies attend-ing and a fun time for everyone. There was an interesting arrayof door prizes given out to 35 lucky ladies. We had a deliciousmeal, opportunities to win four fabulous baskets, and quality fel-lowship with other Shrine ladies. Those attending had an oppor-tunity to meet and visit with our new Outer Guard’s lady,Ladonna Culmann. Thank you, ladies, for attending this eventand helping to make this a wonderful and enjoyable evening.
I would like to thank the ladies who came out to the Shrinecircus and helped in various areas. We appreciate your help andhope you had a rewarding experience working with other Shrineladies and their nobles. The circus is Murat’s biggest fundraiserand we depend on our nobility to help make this a successful
event. Those working at least four sessions will receive an invi-tation to attend the Ringmaster’s Banquet on Friday, April 9.
The Potentate’s Ball was a fantastic evening for Craig andme. What wonderful memories we have that we will alwayscherish. Thank you for coming and helping us celebrate Craig’syear as Potentate. We were so thankful that so many nobles andtheir ladies were able to attend. We were also very happy thatour family and longtime friends could be with us to celebrate andenjoy a spectacular evening with us. We could not have askedfor a lovelier evening ... everything was absolutely perfect.
On April 14, I have scheduled a Ladies Card Party andLuncheon in the Tunisian Room. You and your lady friends canarrive at 9:30 a.m. to begin whatever card games you like. Youcan enjoy coffee and sweet rolls during the early morning hourswith lunch being served around noon. After lunch, you maycontinue your card games until 3 p.m. If you do not play cardsor have a group to come with, please join us for a cup of coffee,a sweet roll, and some good conversation with other Shrineladies. If you would like, you can simply come for lunch. Youwill have a few opportunities to win some nice items and achance to win a door prize. Tickets are available from any Divanlady or at the Shrine office.
I look forward to seeing you on April 14 and also at someof the other Shrine events planned for our nobles and theirladies. Enjoy the wonders of spring and the freshness in the air.

10 THE MURAT MAGAZINE
Yacht Club Jerry Lance
We are still recovering from the International Association of Shrine YachtClubs midwinter meeting which was held in Mobile, AL, last month and the cruiseafterward to Cozumel. After our ship disembarked from Cozumel, they evidentlyhad a tequila shortage on the island. Next year we will warn them we are coming! We had more than 58 nobles and their ladies and families from Indianapolis on thiscruise, and I want to thank all of the nobility from Murat for supporting my suc-cessful bid to be elected fleet captain of the IASYC. It is a great honor to be in theofficer line of this great international Shrine organization, and I will do my best touphold the Murat tradition with the IASYC. The cruise after the midwinter meetingwas so successful and so much fun, that many are pressing us to schedule anothercruise next year sponsored by the Murat Yacht Club. This would probably involvean auto trip to one of the ports within driving range: Mobile, New Orleans,Charleston, or Jacksonville. However, this is still in the planning stages.
Because of the closure of the Gatling Gun Club, we will be having the Knightsof the Sea induction at another venue. We will keep you advised. If you have acandidate, please line him up for a probable June date. All new candidates willreceive a free introductory one-year membership in the Murat Yacht Club, a lifetimemembership as a Knight of the Sea, a delicious meal, and a night of fun and enjoy-ment. Your candidate needs to be enlightened by the ancient secret wisdom of thisdegree, and, of course, this is a stag event!
Remember, to belong to the Murat Yacht Club you do not have to own a boat, but you have to know what a boat looks like. We welcome new members. Wemeet on the third Thursday of each month at the Oasis Lounge at the Murat Shrineat 7 p.m. Additionally, we have an informal lunch each Friday at the KenningtonAmerican Legion Post in Broad Ripple. All Shriners and their friends are alwayswelcome. Every social event of the Murat Yacht Club is a recruiting event, so feelfree to bring prospective Shriners and Masons to all of our social events.Information on Murat Yacht Club shirts, sweatshirts, and other Club regalia will soonbe available. Stay tuned to the Murat Magazine or your e-mail for news.
Nobles, please check your records to see that you have paid your dues. Manyhave not and we cannot keep you on the rolls if the dues have not been paid. Sendthese dues to Noble Don Dawson, our secretary-treasurer, at the following address:5694 E. Fall Creek Parkway, N. Drive, Indianapolis, IN, (317) 475-0530. Dues areonly $15 per year and we really need to have your dues right away to fund ourmany activities.
Until next month, I wish you all fair winds with following seas!
Recorder’s Message Ed Wolfe
When you receive your April mag-azine, we will have had a great circusand Potentate’s Ball. Hopefully, youwere able to attend both of these eventsand they were a huge success.
I recently returned from theRecorders’ Meeting held in Savannah,GA. The meeting was well attendedwith several new and current Recordersfrom Shrine temples across the U.S. andCanada. The meeting was very informa-tive with support staff from Tampa that
delivered up-to-date policies and proce-dures.
As you know, MEMBERSHIPremains a top priority at Murat with thenon-payment of dues, suspensions, deceased and various losses. Our mem-bership team has put together a veryaggressive plan to assist in restoring oursuspended members and creating newnobles. Our Illustrious Potentate Craig T.Hinshaw has scheduled two ceremoni-als in 2010 and as nobles, we need to
attend our Blue Lodges and promote theShrine. I encourage the use ofwww.beashrinernow.com to assist inrecruitment of new Masons andShriners. In closing, if you have changedyour mailing address, e-mail, telephonenumber, spouse, and Clubs or Units, please contact the Fraternal Office so wecan maintain accurate records of infor-mation. Remember, the Fraternal Officeis here to serve you; please let us knowhow we can help.

The circus is coming! The circus iscoming: naw, it already came and wentand last I heard, more than 230 fourthgraders and sponsors had signed up. Butnow it’s the onions are coming! Theonions are coming: find a shift you canhelp with and give Chairman Steve Witt acall (435-3041) when you hear the onionsare in.
Next up is the Countdown on April17 at the Eagles, again with Bob Chezemas chairman. This year the meal part willbe a Fish Fry with Mark Hampton aschairman (big project). Bob has been incharge before but needs nobles to againhelp with this project.
Did you read Tom Williamson’s“Letter to the Editor” in the JournalReview? Looks like it served a couple ofpurposes.
At the last Club meeting, we weretreated to some super hot chili with achoice of three delicious cakes. CharlieHomsher and Maxine really camethrough on a cold night. What a meal ...and only three bucks.
The third five past presidents ofMontgomery County Shrine Club are saidto be: 1985 – Bill Gerald; 1986 – HershelDavis; 1987 – John Servies; 1988 – TomCanada; and 1989 – George Priest.
Your reporter is headed south for afew weeks of warmth and Zem-Zem. HotDarn: When are you coming back Edd?Bring those onions on, Marvin!

IT’S ALL ABOUT MEMBERSHIPChanter President Ned Cline has made membership his
goal for 2010—and that’s a worthy project. For Shrine units, likethe Chanters, membership is critical in enabling the group to doperformances both in Shrine functions and in the community. Inother words, it takes a full and dedicated complement of singersto put a program together.
Many times when we reach out to potential members, thereis a fear that the requirements would include a solo voice orexcellence in reading music. While those are worthy attributes,we are always fast to confess that the majority of our group ismade up of guys who are not soloists and have marginal notereading ability—they are, however, guys who love to sing and arewilling to take the time to practice on Monday nights and learnthe material. The end product is one that “takes a village” andnot individual superstars.
One of our missions in 2010 is to make the Chanters moreavailable to other Masonic bodies. Local Lodges, especially, areoften in need of some lighthearted entertainment for social gath-erings. And, including the Chanters does not mean enduring alengthy concert—we can tailor that to the needs of the event. You also don’t need to feed us; however, donations to the organ-ization enable us to underwrite our music and instrumentation—
those necessities that keep us current and in tune!Aside from working to provide a great musical sound, the
Chanters also have a great time socially. Consider joining us fordinner in the Oasis Lounge prior to our Monday rehearsal. Thensit in with a couple rehearsals to test the waters. You may findthat both musically and socially, the Chanters offer a great frater-nal experience. A few of our members also like to have an occa-sional liquid libation—mostly for medicinal purposes!

IT’S TIME! Uncover those cars!Tune them up, change the oil, anddetail them out! This winter, I think theonly one in Indiana who got to drivehis Corvette was Tom Austin, who waspushing snow. There is somethingwrong with that boy!
There was a lot on the table totake care of at the March meeting—vot-ing in a bylaw change and creating aboard of directors for the Club. Therewere lots of parades to vote on, and wehave had much discussion on settingup day trips to go on, as well as a tripdown to the Corvette Museum inBowling Green, KY. Put the RaySkillman Spring Fling (April 25) on yourcalendar. Last month, I mentioned theSmoky Mountain Fun Fest (May 6–9) inPigeon Forge, TN. Try to make this oneas it is a good parade and lots of fun.We are still trying to get a Septemberdate for our car show. All this andmore to do, and our cars have not leftthe garage yet! Wow! What an upcom-ing year!
A special thanks to those whoattended the Potentate’s Ball. This is agrand affair and an awesome way towelcome in our Potentate, Craig T.Hinshaw, and his Lady Kay.
Let’s keep up our great meetingattendance. We meet the secondThursday of the month at 7:30 in theMotor Corps Room. Many of us comeearly to the Oasis Room for food andZem-Zem, so come join us! Bring yourlady, and remember that you do nothave to be a Corvette owner to join theClub. If you have questions about theCorvette Club, please feel free to con-tact our president, Pip Hapgood, at(317) 753-4350.
By the way, did I ever tell youabout the time I was thrown out ofRaceway Park’s drag strip for nearlyrunning over the starter? Wow, is thatanother story!

Brothers, April is here and we can finally hear the birds singing their spring songs. It
has been a long cold, white winter with plenty of SNOW! It was quite beautifuland many of us had to change lots of plans because of it. But, let’s bid farewell tothe snow and winter months and think, spring, spring, spring!
We have several events planned in April, starting with our monthly meetingon Wednesday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. Hope to see a good turnout now that we candrive on our city/county roads again. At our last meeting, we elected a new mem-ber into our Club; he is Carl E. Culmann. Carl is our new Outer Guard in the Divanline, and we wish him well in his travels in the line. We know he is quite activein Masonry, Scottish Rite Bodies, as well as Murat. Speaking of bodies, we foundout at the “Little Pig” he is quite the fashion icon. Dressed in his aquatic eveningwear, he was quite the picture. If you need more information, all I can say is, “Youshould have been there”! Or better yet, ask Carl who his tailor is.
The Ringmaster’s Banquet will be held on April 9 for those persons whoworked four performances or more—the event is free. If you want to take a spouseor friend with you to the event, you can call the Fraternal Office to purchase extratickets.
TEXAS HOLD’EM will be held on the 10th starting at 6 p.m.Scottish Rite Convocation will be held on the 15th, 16th & 17th of April. Try
to get your petitions in early. POTENTATE’S BRANSON TRIP will take place on April 28, 29, 30 – May 1 &
2. Illustrious Sir Craig and his Lady Kay have promised everyone a great time. Ifyou’ve not been to Branson, it is a great place to enjoy some first class entertain-ment by some big names and some new folks as well. Normally, the shows aredesigned as good, wholesome family entertainment. Colleen and I hope to see youon the bus.
Speaking of bus! Lewie McQueen has arranged for another bus trip toHollywood Casino. The date is June 15 which is a Tuesday. We hope to leaveSouthern Plaza about 9 a.m. and return in the early afternoon. The trip will be ata nominal cost, which includes a FREE buffet lunch. Any profit made will be donat-ed to the Transportation Fund. We only have 55 seats, so get your seats reservedearly. Let’s hope all who go on the trip come back WINNERS! Ladies and guestsare welcome.
Finally, the golf and fishing season is upon us. We hope all of you can catchthe Big One this spring! We also hope to see many of you at the several golf out-ings (15 planned) this year. The Potentate’s Golf Outing will be held on July 15 atValle Vista this year, so start your planning early. See you on the tee!

Hello everybody. As I write this, I’m thinking of spring. Winter is over andhopefully warm weather is on the way.
We had our first NASCAR party of the year for the Daytona race. Good foodand good fellowship equaled a good time by all. Information will be forthcomingif we decide to do this again.
The Club donated $1,500 to the Transportation Fund and $1,500 to theChicago Hospital. Thank you to all nobles who help in our fundraising activities. It’s always a good feeling when we help the kids.

The 2010 circus is over and President Brian and Sherriwould like to thank all Mobil Nobles for their help at the cir-cus this year. They know that putting together meals like thisjust doesn’t happen; it takes a lot of Mobil Nobles and theirladies to pull off something this big. Brian asked Bob andMaggie to chair this endeavor since they did such a great joblast year and even a better job this year. If it was not for allthe food, cooking and preparation that were donated by theladies of our Unit, this would not have been the great suc-cess it was. So from Brian and Sherri, they would like to sendout a big THANK YOU to the ladies of the Mobil Nobles fortheir help.
They also want the ladies of the Divan to know thattheir donations to our meals did not go unnoticed. It wasyour donations that enabled the ladies of our Unit to con-centrate on preparing other things. Sherri and Brian wouldlike to take this opportunity to thank you for your donations.
Brian stated at one of our meetings that from themoney we make at the circus, our Unit will make a gener-ous donation to the temple. The Unit knows that if it werenot for our temple, we would not be able to help the kidswe do.
President Brian would like to remind all Mobil Noblesthat we will hold our April meeting on the 9th following theRingmaster’s Banquet. If you worked four shows at the cir-cus this year, you are invited to this banquet. Make sure toRSVP to the Fraternal Office if you plan to attend. Since thismeeting will be the second of 2010, make sure to attendsince this is only his second try at running a meeting. Wemay have to vote him in again next year just so he can pre-side over our Unit for a full 12 months. I think this is a mat-ter that needs to be brought up at our next meeting (when-ever that may be). Hope to see you all then.

I’ve decided that it would be interesting to have a shortbio on one of the officers from the Club or Drill Team each month. Okay, I admit, from the first couple of ones I have received, they are not short. I had to cut themdown some; otherwise, there would not be room for anything else in the maga-zine. This month, I started with your president, Dennis Parks.
President Parks started his Masonic life 25 years ago at Waldron Blue Lodgeand then joined the Murat and Scottish Rite five years ago. He is currently the firstvice president of the Shelby County Shrine. President Parks is presently employedwith the Shelby County Sheriff Department and is pretty much a “jack and or a mas-ter of all things.” He is the road commander holding the rank of captain. He start-ed his law enforcement career in 1976 as a special deputy, and moved up to jailofficer, then road deputy, road sergeant, and now he has been serving as road cap-tain for 10 years. He is also a motor officer with the department and the officer incharge of the reserve division. President Parks was presented the Merit of Valor inthe line of duty in 1978. He owns a farm and enjoys motorcycling. He receiveda Silver Medal in the World Police & Fire Games in 2001 at Indianapolis in motor-cycling. He is married to Jacque Parks and they have four children and 11 grand-children. President Parks says his wife is his biggest supporter, and because of hersupport, he is able to participate in the Shrine and what it represents. His goal aspresident is to bring more members into the Murat Shrine and Police Club.
That is a wrap for this month. I hope to see you on the first Tuesday of themonth at 7 p.m., downstairs at the Murat, and if you have some extra time, stopby the Oasis Lounge before the meeting.

Spring is finally here! At least the calendar says so. With one of the worst win-ters in recent years, we can blame the famous groundhog. I believe that an exter-minator needs to be retained to plan the fate of Mr. Groundhog.
Another Shrine Circus has come and gone. Several of our Club members arevery devoted to the circus and serve as volunteers in various duties.
As warm weather approaches, the Club is planning to have at least one out-ing or tour in each of the upcoming months. An inside joke in the Club is that nomatter where the tour or outing is, the Club will form at Bob Evans restaurant inShelbyville. This might be because our parade chairman, and sometimes tour direc-tor, lives in Shelbyville! These outings promote fellowship with members andwives, both old and new. There are many places of interest here in Indiana to visit, ranging from dinner theaters and restaurants to historic landmarks and scenicdrives.
A car or truck that is 25 years or older is considered antique. As strange as itseems to me, a 1985 car is now an antique. Several members of the Club have carsthey purchased new 25 plus years ago. An interest in antique vehicles is really theonly requirement to join our Club. See you at our next meeting which is alwaysthe second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Murat.

Also attendingwas Illustrious Potentate Roger Weaverfrom Mizpah Shriners of Fort Wayne. The dinner consisted of 1 lb. pork chopsand music was provided by the bandSurrender Dorothy.

Don’t forget on Fridays we have allthe fish and chicken you can eat. Thefirst and third Fridays we have chicken, and on the second and fourth we havefish. So come out and enjoy the fellow-ship. The nobles do all of the cooking, and they do a very good job of gettingthe fish and chicken ready. Above at
Fish Night is a picture of the crew doingthe cooking: Past President Jim Swain, who is head of the kitchen crew, and hishelpers Past President Curly McNally,Noble Bill McCarty, and Noble RichChristenson. Good job nobles.
I would like to thank the MuratChanters for providing the entertainmenton Friday Fish Night the last Friday ofFebruary. They were very entertaining. What was really great was their last songwhen they sang ‘God Bless America’and the whole room stood. What a greatsight to see.
Another group I would like to rec-ognize is the Blue Coats, which ifnobody knows is our Transportation
Club. They are the nobles who trans-port our children to the hospitals inChicago, Lexington, and Cincinnati.Noble Dick Sobel is going on his eighthyear as president. Noble Dennis Scottserves as secretary and treasurer.Congratulations Dick.
So far this year they have madenine trips. They have had to cancelsome because of the bad weather wehave had this year. These nobles needto be recognized because they are veryunselfish. Thank you and great jobnobles.

Springtime will replace winter snow, sleet, hail, and strong winds with muchanticipated sunshine and rain showers. Yes, the position of our NorthernHemisphere jet stream has dealt a treacherous, wintery season that everyone hopeswill end with the coming of “April Showers.” In the Broadway musical “Bombo,”Al Jolson performed his well-known trademark song ‘April Showers,’ which is stillpopular today. The “Bluebird of Happiness” phrase represented his symbol ofcheer and happiness. When you hear those famous lyrics, “So keep on looking fora bluebird, and waiting for his song,” spring has arrived.
Queen Elena Dix expresses her feeling of appreciation for the wonderfulinstallation of officers Koran Temple No. 30 provided her on March 28. “Thanks toeveryone who participated in making this one of the most beautiful and memorabledays in my life. This is my first office and I will workhard to make my fellow Patrollers proud to have me as an officer. The parade sea-son is right around the corner and we’ll be showing our Shrine pride even morethis year. As you read this manuscript, your IRS tax deadline is less than two weeksaway (4-15-10 or 2359 hours). I haven’t seen my lady and tax preparer for twomonths as she completes 80 free returns for family members, 45 half-priced returnsfor ministry, neighbors and charities, and the balance for Uncle Sam’s sagging econ-omy. Last year, as I waited in line to get a postmark before the deadline with gaso-line at $3 per gallon, I was glad I had enough gas to get my recycled car back tothe stable (gas in car that is). (As Rush would say, “A little bit of humor there.”)This year, I’ll go a day earlier aboard my electric scooter before they cut off mypower.
Thanks to a heavy storm this winter that tookout three trees, I’ll have enough firewood for a cou-ple of weeks of heat until “Ma” Nature takes pity onus Northern Snowbirds.
All is not lost. Oh yes, I know the Colts letone slip but, hey, a fan is a fan and I’ll be there in2012. Will you?
Our next obligation is packing for PigeonForge. Hopefully, the Band will have sufficientforce to warrant a trailer large or small to supportour kids as Joey Scott, 1995 Potentate, said.
The Band was there in force 30/40 strong atsix shows at the Murat Shrine Circus March 4–7.
Purdue now questions the Final Four with theloss of Robbie Hummel, but Butler can pick up theslack. Our counterpart in Bloomington is still look-ing for answers as are Larry Byrd and the Pacers. But, hey, let’s all give thanks. There is always next year and I’m glad I’ve got enough in my piggy bank to paymy fair share and a little of yours too.
God bless this wonderful life.Where on this spheroid (we call earth) can its inhabitants enjoy complaining
about the inequities our government imposes upon us without persecution orharassment as we enjoy the freedoms our Founding Fathers blessed us with? Wecan even end sentences with a preposition.
See you at the circus
