It is very important that your child arrives on time each day as we begin learning activities straight away. The school gates are only opened at the beginning and end of the day, so if you are late or need to collect your child early, you will need to come to the main school entrance. At home time doors open at 3.15pm.

  • It is very important to come to school, on time, every day. We monitor our children’s attendance very closely so please ring and tell us if your child is ill and unable to come to school. If one child in your family is ill, then the others must still come to school. Every time a child is absent or late for school they miss important work and can find it very difficult to catch up later. School will ring home and meet with parents and carers if there are any concerns about a child’s attendance. Please understand that this is because we care about your child and want them to reach their full potential in school. Collecting children We need to know who is collecting your child at all times. If we do not recognise the adult collecting them, we will not let them go. Please let staff know if somebody new will be collecting your child. Please be aware that the person collecting your child must be 16 years or over.

  • Settling In and Routines Starting Reception is an exciting time for children and we aim to make it as happy as possible. To allow children time to settle in, everybody will receive their own start date. We gradually increase the number of children each day until everybody has been admitted. Coming into Reception At the beginning of the year in Reception, we invite parents and carers to bring their child into class and help them to find their name card on their peg, stick it on the board for self-registration and sit on the carpet for an activity. When children begin to settle in, we encourage parents and carers to let children do this independently. When children have settled into Reception, we encourage children to say goodbye to their parents and carers at the cloakroom door. This helps them feel a bit more independent and supports them in the transition to Year 1.

  • Milk and Snack Your child may have milk, water and a piece of fruit every day, this is free for all children in Reception. We encourage children to wash their own hands and get their own milk and snack when they feel ready. These independence skills are a very important part of your child’s development. Lunchtime In Reception, all children are entitled to a free school meal at lunchtime. If you would like to help your child choose their school lunch each day, please request a lunch menu from the school office or one of the staff in Reception.

  • Encouraging Good Behaviour We always celebrate good behaviour in Reception through praise and encouragement. The social and emotional development of our children is a key focus in the Early Years. We expect children to take care of others, themselves and our environment. All adults in the Early Years will model good behaviour and explain to children what is the right or wrong thing to do and why. In the Early Years we use the ‘Give me 5!’ system, to remind children of the key expectations in the classroom. Children will be reminded to: Show active listening Use gentle hands Use thoughtful words Show smart sitting Have a go We always inform parents and carers when children have been doing something good in Reception and equally if there are any behavioural concerns. We welcome any information you can give us about behaviours at home as this helps us to build a link between home and school for your child.

  • The Key Person Role Every child in Reception will have a Key Person. Their Key Person will take time to build a strong relationship with them and get to know you as parents or carers so that you feel able to talk to them about your child. Your child’s Key Person will be introduced to you when they start Reception. Your Child’s Profile In the Early Years your child will have their own ‘profile’. We take lots of photographs and write observations of your child when they are playing to assess their learning throughout the year. You are welcome to look at your child’s profile at any time to see how they are getting on in school. Parent Partnerships The profile is a chance to share learning at home and school so please do add to your child’s profile. If you are unsure of what to write then we will always be happy to help. We really value the importance of parents and carers and believe that you are the key to your child’s success. You know your child better than anybody and you can really help your child to succeed in life. Please support your child in bringing their book bag into school with their reading book every day. Each week we also send home a learning log task to complete at home.

  • Uniform and Clothing We want the children who come to Hunslet Moor Primary School to feel that they belong and have a real sense of pride in our school. Our school uniform is shown below. School sweatshirts, cardigans and PE T-shirts can be ordered at the school office at any time.

Blue jumper/cardigan Blue or white polo shirt

Grey or Black trousers, skirt or dress

  • PE Kit

At Hunslet Moor Primary School we recognise that physical education is an important part of our children’s weekly curriculum. Children take part in PE lessons each week, during which they learn how to have an active and healthy lifestyle. Reception PE is based indoors each week.

Plain, dark tracksuit bottoms or shorts White t-shirt Pumps for indoor PE

  • Outdoor Clothing We work inside and outside in all weathers so please ensure your child comes to school with suitable clothing as shown below; Hot Weather

Sun hat Sun cream Wet Weather Wellies Waterproof coat with hood Cold Weather Warm coat Hat Scarf Gloves

  • Shoes and footwear We encourage children to run, climb and balance in our outside area so we need to make sure they are wearing the right shoes. Plain black trainers or flat shoes are best-no strappy sandals or high heels are allowed at any time as they can be dangerous! Jewellery No jewellery other than studs is allowed for safety reasons. We are aware that some children may wear a necklace for religious reasons and we ask that they wear this tucked inside their top to protect their neck when playing and working.

The importance to some pupils of the outward signs of faith is understood and recognised. Such items of clothing can be worn in a plain style and incorporating the school colours. Parents and carers are encouraged to discuss this with the Headteacher if they require any further clarification, therefore ensuring a mutually acceptable outcome is achieved.

  • We are here for every child and every family. If you would like to know more about any of the information in this booklet, or you have a different question or concern, please feel welcome to come and speak to Mrs Griffiths (Early Years Leader and Assistant Headteacher), or speak to one of the Reception team. We look forward to working together with you in our Early Years.
