CONCEPTThe concept behind deriving the Ten Easy Recipe Book was to develop a recipe book for young adults on the go who may not have time to cook healthy meals for themselves. Whether they are college kids or young adults already in the business world, this cookbook is filled with ten colorful meals that are quick and easy to make. With attention to photography and layout this cookbook is laid out to attract the hungry minds and stomachs of young people who are always on the go.

INSPIRATIONThe inspiration that ignited this project derived from Pinterest. Photography was a main focus in the development of the recipe book; therefore, images of food and meal layouts were vital for success. Attention to trends and the general taste of the public were also concerns. Picking out recipes that included colorful ingredients, quick preparation times, and abundance in health were necessary in reaching the final goal of a recipe book full of healthy quick meals.

DEVELOPMENTFiguring out a general layout of the book, page size, and design elements were the beginning steps taken in order to make the process go as smoothly as possible. The book needed to be small enough to not take up too much space in the kitchen but big enough for the cook to read easily. A square layout on an 8”x8” page proved to be the most legible and appealing size for the book design.

ELEMENTSPicking out a background and plate for the recipe book set the whole mood of the book. With attention to popular trends of the public, a wooden background was decided on. The board was purchased, cut, and stained to the proper size and color for the desired look. To add contrast against the busy background a simple round metallic plate was chosen. When shot by the Nikon 3100 the plate created a glow that attracted the viewer to the meal it was displaying.

TYPOGRAPHYOnce the background and plate were chosen the typeface had to fit just right with the whole gourmet modern kitchen theme. So as not to distract from the food, a simple san-serif primary and secondary typeface were decided on. With the bold Avenir Next Condensed as a statement primary font and a contrasting thin Univers 57 Condensed as a secondary the desired look was acquired. Both fonts worked well together and the displayed information was legible and eye-catching.

SET UPSetting up the photo booth in a setting close to where the food preparation would be taking place was important in deciding location. Setting up the photo booth in a room adjacent to the kitchen made the whole process so much easier. Using Cowboy Studio Photo lights and a Nikon 3100 camera, the pictures came out sharp and vibrant.
