I am very concerned by the recent push being made by the pro-nuclear

organizations to avoid required lega1 forums and gain licensingoZ'acific.

Gas and Electric's Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. E have.

been a resident of San tuis Obispo for the past five years allowing

me to be well informed of the many issues that the Diablo Canyon Plant

poseso The one issue that bothers me the most, aside frcm the continued

reluctanceof'he Nuclear Industry to follow the format of public/

hearings and proceedings, is the issue of the Hosgri Fault system.

Geology courses are required of Natural Resource=.Student's at

Cal Poly. The excursions for those courses are to local geological

formations, including fault systems Some of the fault systems visited

lie almost directly East of'iablo Canyon and are classified as non-

active or ancient fault systems. Although this particular system is

not active, it is a record of the type of'ctivity that can occur in

and around the Diablo Canyon area. With the recent earthquake incidents

occuring in the Pismo Beach/ Arroyo Grande area and observation of

the geological history of the area near the Hosgri system, it is easy

to assume that a large incident will occur in the near future. J/oBecause of the conclusion I have made, I can not understand the

desire of'ne industry to rush blindly into their own destruction.

I am writing this letter as an appeal to you.'for yourhelp in stopping the licensing of the Diab3o'- CanyonNuclear Power Plant, 'le need your help immediate';y tostop the dangerous polution and distruction- of our homeand lives. Ne chose this area 14 years ago..to 3.ive andraise our children in a peaceful life and atmosphere;and purchased our home here seven years ago'. But ifDiablo is allowed to open and operate we could not livehere anymore without a continual fear and threat ofdanger and we will have to move away from an -area welove most and my parents and brother and si'ster, feel thesame way,

There are too many dangers and hazards that; have not beenconsidered as real and serious to the people who live inthis area by P.G.hZ. and the licensing board, who of coursedon't live anywhere near here. The .Hosgri Fault, threemiles out from the plant, is active and as we know earthquakes are becoming more frequent and stronger. The forceof the ocean tides and currents have become ever increasingand even recently partially distroyed the Diablo Plantsbreakwater, If a large quake should hit it could 'oe deathlyto us all here. Ny children and family couldn't enjoy thebeautiful beach and waters of Avila for fear of contamination.And in an area that survives on the tourist and fishing tradeplus farming it would be total distruction. Just knowingthat the nuclear fuel is already bei..g stored on the sitescares me more than I know how to say.

There is also no means of evacuation for this area. Ishudder to think of everyone trying to get oui and bottlenecking up on Cuesta grade, It would be totally impassi'ole.There is no place to go up Highway I, no food, fuel orshelter and to go south would be to pass right hrough anyemissions and radioactive polution, so we might as wel3. s~ayright here and watcn ourselves and our children slowly dieof disease year by year or worse day 'oy day. ~o3

I have never been able to understand why they say nuclear,,Power is a cheap means of energy when it costs millionsand millions to build and maintain it, and it can't evenbe maintained properly for fear of contamination 'oy the'„."employees. And in a disaster like Three Nile Island in,the billions to repair the damages that cannot ever be':repaired. Then, after all the expence, it has to bedecommissioned and there sits a huge boiling pot of con-tamination just waiting to kill,There; is no reason why Diablo cannot be converted to analternate energy source. The P.G,AE. Plant in. Norro. Bayuses the ocean v.aters as a very effective power source.Solar energy would also be less costly and effective foreternity with no hazards to anyone. P.G. & E,, is just amoney hungry bunch of idiots with no thoughts or feelingsabout the future except their pocket books.

Please intr. Hendrie, I am sincerely hoping our letters willbe read and will be acted upon to the best interest of thepeople who live here. We do not want a Nuclear'ower Plantin our back yard. They should never be allowed in a pop-ulated area or any place for that matter, Do you know howeasy it would be for one to be sabbotaged. Why does our lives have to be threatened by some hugecompany with their giant monstrosity. They are so big theythink they can run and control the whole country, it is
