W ITH Christmas fast ap-proaching, it is only natural that our thoughts turn toward our

loved ones who are no longer with us.

November 1, All Saints’ Day: We praise God for his masterpiece – the saints, those Christians who reached spir-itual maturity in this life, and rightly earned their Heavenly abode.

November 2, All Souls’ Day: On this day, Catholics come together to pray for the eternal rest of our many brothers and sisters who died in friendship with Christ, but had not reached spiritual maturity. Instead of entering Heaven immediately, these souls were taken by God to the spir-itual hospital known as “purgatory”.

Purgatory is a state in which God lovingly purifies His children from the damage their sins inflicted on their souls while they were still on earth. Understandably, many of us don’t like to pray for our departed loved ones. It can be hurting to think of them, either because we still feel the pain of their loss, or because it reminds us of the un-comfortable reality of our own imminent death, which isn’t too far away. But the Church, like a good mother, knows that it is a good thing to think of and pray for the dead, hence the commemoration of All Souls’ Day.

Since God is pure love, there is no self-ishness in Heaven. It goes without saying that not all of us, even “good” Christians, leave this world completely free of selfish tendencies. For example, those who die with such attitude, among others, may need cleansing before they enter Heaven.

This purification can also take place here on earth! One of the reasons God permits

suffering is to give us an opportunity to endure pain and suffering with love, as Christ did on the cross. When we do that, suffering becomes a medicine that lessens our selfishness and helps us grow in Christ-like virtues: patience, humility, strength, and wisdom.

Not too long ago, Catholics would flock to churches on All Souls Day to offer prayers in memory of their friends and loved ones. These days, however, All Souls Day Mass is poorly attended. Since praying for the dead is our Chris-tian duty, it is disheartening to see how little attention is paid to All Souls Day.

When people pass from this world to the next, they can’t pray for themselves but we can pray for them and they for us. In the Communion of Saints, which we regularly recite in The Creed, we can begin to prepare for this “communion” now by praying for our departed loved ones. They will reward us with their intercession!

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI de-scribed beautifully what purgatory is about, in his encyclical on hope, ‘Spe Salvi’: “This early Jewish idea of an in-termediate state includes the view that these souls are not simply in a sort of temporary custody but, as the parable of the rich man illustrates, are already being punished or are experiencing a provisional form of bliss.

“There is also the idea that this state can involve purification and healing which mature the soul for communion with God.

“The early Church took up these con-cepts, and in the Western Church they gradually developed into the doctrine of Purgatory. We do not need to examine here the complex historical paths of this development; it is enough to ask what it actually means. With death, our life-choice becomes definitive – our life stands before the judge. Our choice, which in the course of an entire life takes on a certain shape, can have a variety of forms.

“There can be people who have totally destroyed their desire for truth and readi-ness to love, people for whom everything has become a lie, people who have lived for hatred and have suppressed all love within themselves. This is a terrifying thought, but alarming profiles of this type can be seen in certain figures of our own history. In such people all would be be-yond remedy and the destruction of good would be irrevocable: this is what we mean by the word Hell.

“On the other hand there can be people who are utterly pure, completely perme-ated by God, and thus fully open to their neighbours – people for whom commun-ion with God even now gives direction to their entire being and whose journey to-wards God only brings to fulfilment what they already are.”

As we remember our dearly departed, let us pray with all the faithful: “Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful de-parted, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”
